i tow a avon 340 rib with a 20 four stroke honda outboard behind grandbanks eastbay 38. i can tow it at 22 knots at most and if i get caught in rough weather with 6-8 foot waves im fine would a 90 being towed put to much weight on the transom
@saltwaterallday The Bob's plate works well,I've had it for five years and I've only had the up down switch go on me once-just had to resolder it-just seal the switch box with silicone when you first get it and this shouldn't happen. As for performance when planed out, you can feel the boat accelerate when you raise it from 1" to 3".About 5mph extra at full speed. It raises to 6" for putting around in shallow bays etc.The motor is quiet enough for talking, but the wind noise gets pretty loud
im not sure yet all the ones i have found on craigslist are older and have not been run for a while that are way over priced or i could get a new one for 2000-3000 but thats as much as a hull so im not sure im still looking. you have a bobs machine shop plate how is it
@ Saltwaterallday Wow, is it an older boat? We had a 13 that had the old splashwell and I could see how it would be weaker - there was no support for the transom, the splashwell consisted of a wall that went from gunnel to gunnel.
Sounds like a great idea for your rig-the Bob's Machine is great so far on mine. Would you get an older 90?
A guy had a 13 with etec40 at my dock he had a lot of trouble with the hull he had to get 1 inch thick rods through the transom to the other side of the bilge with 2 inch washers to spread out the weight this was in saltwater and so am I I'm interested to put a 90 yamaha with a Jack plAte from bobs machine shop thAt I found online it looks pretty good and a couple other things like boysen reeds and and a new prop
@saltwaterallday The transom is really strong. There are no stress cracks after 11 years with the 90 and the jackplate. Mind you I don't hammer it out of the hole very often...
I've had this out in the Gulf of Mexico on three different trips, and so far so good for salt water use. I crave a longer boat for sure, there are very few days that I can open it up full throttle without getting pounded!
@TrustworthyMtgGuy Yeah 48 would be nice - good luck with it. My engine is going to need some work soon, it's running rough at high throttle and losing power. They're great motors, at least mine has been flawless since I bought it new in '99.
I have (just bought) a 15 whaler with a 75 merc , bottom paint on it and a 21inch pitch aluminum prop...doing 41 on the GPS...going to put some seafoam in the gas to try and see if she opens up a bit...the previous owner was claiming 48mph and according to this vid and comments, 48mph sounds more like it...I look forward to feeling that 48mph...41 is feeling feisty already when trimmed way up !
Thats a fast little whaler. I got a 150 Montauk w/60 hp Merc. Tops out at about 32mph in a light chop. I couldnt imagine doing 56mph. Its USCG rated for only 60.
Thanks, she's still running strong after a decade's use. Love the classic blue interior on those old 13's. My buddy just put a classic 500 on his 13 (taken from an old house boat) once we re propped it, she flew nicely and looked proper with the vintage motor too
my friend has an 89' super sport with a 60 yamaha. prolly one of the most fun boats ive been on. the way they bank on turns is great and the unstableness is a lot of fun
Yeah true- I've towed the 15 down to Florida and had it out in the Gulf in the swells there and while it was fun in the morning, the afternoon chop was what killed me. Salt water is harder too!
if u were a frequent open ocean fisherman i would say a 90 on a 15 footer is suicide but conditions like that would be nice with that setup... i have a 67 montauk with an 1984 suzuki 85 with 2 speeds idol, and fucking gone. the motor is garbage and i think ill be getting a 90, but going that fast with a 3 ft swell can be a little shady...and thats just a 3 ft swell
You have a true classic! My brother had that boat with a 40 merc bought in 71 - it went over 40mph with the motor jacked up and a two blade prop. Back in the day it was the fastest whaler on the river!
yeah I think the tower of power 6 would be a little unwieldy - there is a guy on here that gets 60mph out of his 6cyl on a mischeif 15. It's just a shaky speck on camera going mach 1 ! Good luck with the 130 please post a vid I want to see that for sure
nice. yea it was a 3 cyl. that i raced. i can imagine the 6cyl tower of power would be too heavy. I have a 130 1996 johnson in my shed. Im gonna bolt it on this spring for shits and giggles. Im gonna put a 19'' prop on it and go for a sub 6 second 0-40 to start. Those mercs sure are fast on the top end... 57 mph thats nice. good luck keep it right side up!
That's fast, and that v4 would have an awesome hole shot. Mine has topped out at 56.8 mph on gps but I opened the hull bottom to check for water and it's quite waterlogged. I wonder how much speed I'm losing - there is lots of water in there :(
I have a new Laser2 that's 24" that I just bought. We'll see how that works !
same here the guy i bought my 67 from ran it up on a trailer with rollers that didnt roll so its had 3 holes in it since forever, so its a bit heavier, last year i got it ready just to fish but i plan on a full restoration this year
I have a 15' super sport with a 86' 90 horse evinrude. Nasty holeshot even with a 21'' stainless wheel. Ive raced a 15' with a 90 merc and it couldnt touch me in the midrange from say 20 mph to 50. top end was pretty close. Without a jackplate or nosecone engine just bolted to the top bolt on the engine i ran 54.1 mph on GPS with that 21'' raker at 6100 rpm.
for the previous comment, the boat wont handle well at speed at all, its dead calm and hes goin straight, my friend has same boat wit a 60 four stroke yamaha and his boat is unstable when there are actually waves. so this thing wud about flip if any kind of waves came
good, if i set the trim low in my 15 whaler 75 merc. the wheel wants to turn abruptly to the left... i was thrown away form boat once .....i have telefex in mine... if i trim high i fell like the bow is a little high but the pulling to the left stops... is that the good point for trim?
Sorry, I posted a long reply and haven't seen it come up - The camera is on the light post, the prop does slip more at higher trim so it will take away some torque but you'll lose speed and it will be unsafe if your prop lets go and the bow drops (been through this)
Looks like it came up this time - anyways good luck and keep me up to date. I did have a spill with my old teleflex too but it happened when I was trimmed all the way down (turned to the right when the wheel slipped out of my hand for a split second) I slammed into my passenger and he slammed into the railing bruising his right leg so badly he had to get it checked out! That's when I got the hydraulic steering...
I set the jack plate at 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches, then I trim until I feel the hull release - I don't trim too high or it will chine walk. It's way safer with the hydraulic steering - something I would recommend for this rig!

is your engine to loud to talk to the person next to you when planed off

would having a 90 on a classic 15 in saltwater be to much??
saltwaterallday 1 year ago
hurt more than anything if u hit ground at top speed

does the weight of the merc effect your transom?? does the jackplat reduce some of it???

Nice setup, that motor sounds healthy up top.
We've got a little 1966 13' Classic with a built, jacked up, short-shaft Merc 500. With a 3-blade ComProp, it's a real ass kicker!
