Was the chairshot to Vince an onscreen snafu (as in Roddy intended to hit Flair)? If someone had told Vince after this show "in 6 or 7 years time, you will not only be taking chair shots from your employees, but you'll be wrestling with them too" would Vince have said"you're nuts" or "that's a great idea."
@walruswasrob The chairshot was planned. You can tell by the way Vince was selling it. It was done for "shock value" and to add extra intrigue into the storyline.
@walruswasrob Vince did what he had to do to beat WcW in the ratings, and he had to do alot! I don't think Vince ever wanted to wrestle but he did what he had to do
too bad Macho Man was on probation or he might of actually helped.....He's had a storied history of not helping out when his "friends"are being viciously assaulted .....like when yokozuna was attacking Crush ,causing Kona Crush to resent him(Macho Man) and subsequently turn on Savage
Looks to me like Piper couldnt back up the smack he was talking about Flair on the mic. Even Savage didnt want some of the punishment, he played it smart and stayed out of the way. He`ll think twice next time he wants to talk crap about the Real Worlds Champ behind his back!
This was the difference between NWA and WWF talent. WWF talent was so far superior; Flair, the NWA's best, ended up in a no contest against a WWF jobber.
@ECWnWWF - what the heck are you talking about? Flair went on to outlast 30 of the WWF's guys in the Royal Rumble to win the title, then had great matches against Savage, launched Bret Hart as a legit world champion and event gave Shawn Michaels his first singles match against a main event star. Flair did a lot in that year 1/2
@ECWnWWF: I'd disagree with you since Flair was on WWF turf. But when Hogan, a WWF-bred talent, walked into WCW and beat Flair in his FIRST match there, your statement has some credibility. If anything, WWF has taught their best talent to be protective of their livelihoods.
vince was a good announcer to a point at some point in the mid 1990s he said unbelievable a million times and cartooned it too much but at this time he was okay.
did he take a chair shot here? 1991 and 1992 were amazing years for the wwe as they tried to work with hogan doing around 10 matches total (major) during this time
IMO, Piper/Flair should've taken place at the Rumble in 92 with Flair going over and then Flair moving on to WrestleMania to go over against Hogan in a "Title vs Title" match. In the mean time, I would not of had Hogan lose the belt to Taker at Survivor Series, that way Hogan would've been the WWF Champion for over a year, so Flair's victory would've been that much more special.
The future WWE tag team champions who would have thought that flair and piper would team up (to take on the Spirit Squad in the 2000s)? These guys really hit it off.
I use to say it would have been great say 1980-81 if Vince McMahon would attack one of the heels in the ring on all-star wrestling. This is great seeing Vince involved.
@DonEddy well....flair kinda brought some realism to wwf...most of it was a buncha animated character wrestlers....with the exception of a few good promo cutters, mostly heels like piper and jake roberts. everyone else complimented or opposed hulk hogan "superhero/real american" i think wrestling was its best in 1997 when DX was in its unrefined infancy and really were controversial...and stone cold was hell raising and yet to be crowned champion, and therefore hungrier.
I remember this incident very well. I loved the Way Naitche made an Impact, maybe next time Piper and McMahon will have some respect in their voice when they are talking about "The Real World Champion" lol (This was a beautiful classic moment
Most of the time the announcers weren't really there at live event tapings, they were "blue or green screened" in to make it appear that they were there. This was one of the times they were really there and this was an awesome angle at the time.
Isn't it funny? On the edition of RAW that aired on November 16th, 2009, it looked like Rowdy Roddy Piper & Vince McMahon were going to have a street fight. Could it be that the animousity between these 2 stemmed from this 1991 incident when Piper whacked McMahon with that chair? Albeit inadvertently.
What's more: I had regularly been watching WWF/E SuperStars since 1987 and this is the 1st time I can recall that a wrestler interfered with the commentators. Prior to this, I thought the commentary was recorded in post-production. It felt odd not hearing any voice-over for the replay. Although I remember Mene Gene voiced it over when it re-aired the following week. Again, on RAW on 11-16-09, when Sheamus kicked Lawler in the head; it reminded me of this Frair vs. Piper confrontation.
It Can ONly be Called Greatness when Two Diamonds get together and renew a great rivalry. They had some Classics. Damn I miss These Guys in their Prime
I love it how when Flair comes out and sees Piper he laughs at him. Then when he's yelling at Mcmahon he blasts Piper. Classic Flair, I can't even watch wrestling without Flair. He was the greatest, he made me laugh, he was entertaining. Class Confidence, great wrestler, no one could cut a better promo. His mic skills, greatset ever! WOOOOO
This was also during the era when Geraldo Rivera got hit by a chair during the KKK riot on his show...Vince wanted THAT kind of thing on him as well! :-D
i like roddy rowdy piper more...especially as a heel he kicked ass...ric flair wouldnt do this to piper back in the 80's piper always had a plan lol...piper's the greatest heel of all time i love him now but hated him back then
Great shock TV for its time. I remember this when it aired, it created such a buzz with friends when I was back in school on Monday following this incident.
Also, has anyone else noticed that Flair wasn't recognized as 'Nature Boy' until mid '92? Any particular reason for that?
Some of the greatest shock type angles happened in 1991. There was this, the one with Ultimate Warrior being locked in the coffin, the Jake Roberts heel turn with the Warrior getting bitten by the snake (as well as the other training angles between those 2), and Savage getting bitten by Jake's cobra. Also Damien getting "killed" by Earthquake was another one. Then in '92 was Berzerker almost impaling the Undertaker, Jake attacking the Undertaker & Bossman's brutal beating by Nailz.
@centuridan I agree with you. This was back in the day when WCW and WWF didn't recognize one another. So, to see Flair show up with the other promotion's world title created heat for the fans. We now had something besides "The Wrestler", "Inside Wrestling" or "Pro Wrestling Illustrated" to support the fact more than one promotion was in existence.
I know that Jim Herd got a sinking feeling in his behind when this aired. He never asked Flair for the belt back when he left WCW. Then, he shows up on WWE TV with the belt. Needless to say, Herd was soon gone from WCW, and all I had to say was "Good Riddance." I mean, what did Herd know about wrestling? Not a thing. Remember, this is the guy who brought The Ding Dongs to WCW, and who wanted a tag team called The Hunchbacks, too.
I couldn't imagine how furious the NWA officials had to be during this time. I'm pretty sure that they were more than happy to see Flair displaying their world title belt that Crockett had paid for put on display on WWF-TV. Since he never lost the belt, him having it looked more legitimate than the Luger-Windham match at the Bash.
What a bad time to be a fan of the NWA because you could see the writing on the wall after that. It was as if WCW had hired Herd to implode the NWA from within.
@ratesforless Herd didn't know jack about pro wrestling. He was a pizza salesman. Later, they would hire Bill Watts and he was just as bad. I mean, putting his own son over at the veteran talents' expense. He ran Rick Rude, Paul E. Dangerously, Arn Anderson, and Scott Steiner off. Everyone was scared and BW loved it. In other words, he was going to destroy WCW just to save it. Well, Bill Shaw showed him otherwise.
@mkl62 He did ask for the belt back, the problem was Ric was still the recognized NWA champion when he went to WWF WCW didn't own the belt the NWA did. they were at the time just a member of the national wrestling allianace .
RIC mentioned in his book that WCW sued over it and lost. as the belt was not actually their property.
And yeah, Jim herd was a complete moron. GO PIZZA HUT ! LOL
@bigrigbob2010 Actually, WCW owned the belt. It was created in 1986 for Jim Crockett Promotions, which later became WCW. Flair didn't want to give it back because he was owed money.
@c102484 The money he was owed was $25,000 plus interest which was the deposit on the belt. Every NWA champ had to put the money down in case they decided not to drop it when told , so they would not keep it/a new one could be made.
he told Herd to tell dillenger to come get it but to bring his money Herd told him to fuck off more or less. so he didn't return it. He put the deposit down long before Crocket promotions was bought. and when he left he WAS still the recognized NWA Champ
@bigrigbob2010 Yes, that is correct. However, the belt itself was owned by WCW, not the NWA. The NWA owning the belt is a common misconception, but it was owned by JCP/WCW.
wow..I remember watching this at my grandparents' house. I used to totally despise Ric Flair when I was a kid, especially after what he did here to Hot Rod.
LOL.. I still laugh at this clip ...Flair beat pipers ass and just humiliated him......LOL flair slappin piper on the back of the head and knockin his head set off LOL...then a dazerd piper turns and nails vince with the chair knockin himout LOL hahahahahahaha
One of the few times the announcers were actually there live ... however I'm sure it was just for this segment only. I think this was McMahon's first ever bump, as well.
Back in the day (before Raw), I only attended one TV taping and that was a Challenge taping at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD. Vince never brought TV to Maryland, as it was WCW territory, but I was lucky enough to at least see one show. To my surprise Monsoon and Heenan weren't there, so I basically learned how the commentary was actually done in post production and they stand in front of a blue screen for the intros. Wasn't a bad show, but it didn't let out until like 12:03!
at 2:45 that was some pretty loud boo's. Its funny how when flair is about to hit him with the chair with a clean shot, the refs end up getting it back lol
Savage was on probation to get re-instated by Jack Tunney to wrestle Jake "The Snake" Roberts after he ruined Savage's wedding reception at SummerSlam 1991! He eventually was.
I love how they used the "real" Also Sprach Zarathustra...no pun intended. I hated the crappy synthesized theme they used later that year and in 1992/93.
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this on Canada's WWF show. For me it kind of marked the beginning of the end of the era of WWF that I watched as a kid. I never really got into any of the generations of wrestlers that followed.
There's just one problem with your argument. They billed Flair as the "Real" World Champion. That's hardly a burial,in fact it's actually a diss to Hogan! There were two entities that Vince really couldn't bury.Flair was one,the Road Warriors were the other.
In a lot of minds, Flair was the Real World Champion. They were building this towards a feud between Hulk Hogan in a Champion v.s Champion type of match at Wrestlemania 8, but Hogan politicked his way out of it and it was changed to a double Main Event, Hogan v.s Sid Justice and Savage v.s Flair. Hogan is that insecure.
Hulk didn't want out of it, as he would have beaten Flair. Hulk was leaving, so that's why they couldn't have a Flair/Hogan match at WrestleMania VIII. They couldn't have Hogan win the title and then retire. Also, Vince didn't want the Flair/Hogan feud being cut short, so he decided to nix the feud altogether.
Yeah that does make sense. Hogan around the time wanted to retire to spend more time with his family and make movies. It be pointless for him to beat Flair for the belt only to leave the WWF
and dropping the title. It would've been an awesome match though.
Check out their WCW match at Halloween Havoc 94. That was the best match I've ever seen between them. It was one of the only matches WCW had that was produced & planned like a Wrestlemania match. That entire feud they had in 1994 was great & very well built up, though their 1st match (where Hogan won the title) wasn't the best. Their 8/94 Clash of Champions match felt like an SNME buildup match from the early 90's. Sherri was great as Flair's manager--exactly like the Queen Sherri days.
But they acknowledged that the claim was from "another organization" when Bobby Heenan first presented the big gold belt. There was no self-proclamation.they used the fact that though WCW stripped him of the title, the NWA(what was left of it)still recognized him until he actually signed with Vince.
True, but he was called the "real" world's champion to get heel heat. WWE would never actually say that another organization's title was more prestigious than their own, and they wouldn't disrespect their cash cow Hogan either.
Randy Savage has had at least 4 action figures of him at least back in the day (an LJN figure, a Hasbro figure of him as Macho Man in orange trunks, A Hasbro figure of him as Macho King in purple trunks, and another Hasbro figure of him as Macho Man in the jacket, hat & pants. I never liked the lines of figures after the Hasbro ones.
But I don't know what went on between them. There's a rumor about Randy Savage and Stephanie, but it's only a rumor.
i had read recently that Mcmahon Does not like Savage's name mentioned around him due to Savage allegedly having sex with Steph Mcmahon when she was a younger teenager.. possibly why Savage has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Vince couldn't take bumps when he was nice guy commentator. Mr. McMahon could dish it out though. Flair's debut was one of the most hell raising ever. If I were in 1991 now, I'd cheer him on as he kicked some ass. That was sweet, vintage Nature Boy.
I remember the following week on Superstars, Vince sold the chairshot by wearing a neckbrace. Why he'd need one when he took a shot on the back is beyond me. Regardless of that, however, this was a tremendous angle and it was pretty heavy stuff at the time.
The real reason was Vince McMahon has a history of neck problems and he had hurt it a few days before the taping of WWF Supers Of Wrestling and they used the neck brace to sell what happpen the the week before and that was the first time anyone hit Vince McMahon with a chair Austin was second
After that incident, WWF president Jack Tunney reinstated Roddy Piper to deal with Ric Flair.

wow..I remember watching this at my grandparents' house. I used to totally despise Ric Flair when I was a kid, especially after what he did here to Hot Rod.
oldskoolpunkchick27 3 years ago
LOL.. I still laugh at this clip ...Flair beat pipers ass and just humiliated him......LOL flair slappin piper on the back of the head and knockin his head set off LOL...then a dazerd piper turns and nails vince with the chair knockin himout LOL hahahahahahaha

This was Vince McMahon's first bump. I remember it as if it were yesterday.

Thank you Ric, thank you Roddy, you're the greatest wrestler, there were, there are and there ever will be!!!!

i totally agree with you mate, problem is a bloke with an ego like Mcmahon never forgets and likes to make people pay for their mistakes.

paybacks a bitch huh Piper? now you know how JImmy Superfly Snunka felt!
u2control 3 years ago 2
One of the few times the announcers were actually there live ... however I'm sure it was just for this segment only. I think this was McMahon's first ever bump, as well.
MystikWizard 3 years ago
Yeah, I went to many Superstars tapings, and I never saw Vince and Jesse or Piper.
Koolazzmike 3 years ago
Back in the day (before Raw), I only attended one TV taping and that was a Challenge taping at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD. Vince never brought TV to Maryland, as it was WCW territory, but I was lucky enough to at least see one show. To my surprise Monsoon and Heenan weren't there, so I basically learned how the commentary was actually done in post production and they stand in front of a blue screen for the intros. Wasn't a bad show, but it didn't let out until like 12:03!

It seems like Savage was trying to console Piper here near the end... I thought Savage was the heel commentator, wasn't he?
rlouie05 3 years ago
No, Savage was a babyface after WrestleMania VII.
Tubewings 3 years ago
at 2:45 that was some pretty loud boo's. Its funny how when flair is about to hit him with the chair with a clean shot, the refs end up getting it back lol
stndrds79 3 years ago
oh of course, he was always good.
stndrds79 3 years ago
Did he nail Vince McMahon with the chair? And why?
Lizdad08 3 years ago
Yes and presumably because he was dazed from Flair's attack.

I rememer the T-shirts Piper wore, "I Scare Flair"
Derrtyindian 3 years ago
Savage was on probation to get re-instated by Jack Tunney to wrestle Jake "The Snake" Roberts after he ruined Savage's wedding reception at SummerSlam 1991! He eventually was.
sasromans11 3 years ago
I love how they used the "real" Also Sprach Zarathustra...no pun intended. I hated the crappy synthesized theme they used later that year and in 1992/93.
sinfonian39 3 years ago
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this on Canada's WWF show. For me it kind of marked the beginning of the end of the era of WWF that I watched as a kid. I never really got into any of the generations of wrestlers that followed.
ozzmodan 3 years ago
This was McMahon (WWF) telling Jim Herd (NWA/JCP/WCW) the following:
1) Your crown jewel champion for the past 10 years has to use underhanded tactics to beat our non-contenders.
2) Your crown jewel isn't in our league.
3) Your belt is on OUR TV show getting 1000x more exposure in the 4-5 minutes than the past 10 years.
4) The NWA is a minor league compared to the WWF.
rlouie05 3 years ago
Yep just what he did with WCW in 2001 when he made Booker T to look like a chump.
PeterSmeter 3 years ago
There's just one problem with your argument. They billed Flair as the "Real" World Champion. That's hardly a burial,in fact it's actually a diss to Hogan! There were two entities that Vince really couldn't bury.Flair was one,the Road Warriors were the other.
bull705 3 years ago
In a lot of minds, Flair was the Real World Champion. They were building this towards a feud between Hulk Hogan in a Champion v.s Champion type of match at Wrestlemania 8, but Hogan politicked his way out of it and it was changed to a double Main Event, Hogan v.s Sid Justice and Savage v.s Flair. Hogan is that insecure.
EricV1 3 years ago
Hulk didn't want out of it, as he would have beaten Flair. Hulk was leaving, so that's why they couldn't have a Flair/Hogan match at WrestleMania VIII. They couldn't have Hogan win the title and then retire. Also, Vince didn't want the Flair/Hogan feud being cut short, so he decided to nix the feud altogether.
Edgehead10075 3 years ago
Yeah that does make sense. Hogan around the time wanted to retire to spend more time with his family and make movies. It be pointless for him to beat Flair for the belt only to leave the WWF
and dropping the title. It would've been an awesome match though.
EricV1 3 years ago 3
It would have been, but it probably wouldn't have been as good a match as Flair vs. Savage, so I have nothing to complain about.
Edgehead10075 3 years ago
@EricV1
Sherri was great as Flair's manager--exactly like the Queen Sherri days.
wtcvidman 2 years ago
It wasn't really a diss to Hogan. It was just a storyline, with Flair as the self-proclaimed real world's champion.
Edgehead10075 3 years ago
But they acknowledged that the claim was from "another organization" when Bobby Heenan first presented the big gold belt. There was no self-proclamation.they used the fact that though WCW stripped him of the title, the NWA(what was left of it)still recognized him until he actually signed with Vince.
bull705 3 years ago
True, but he was called the "real" world's champion to get heel heat. WWE would never actually say that another organization's title was more prestigious than their own, and they wouldn't disrespect their cash cow Hogan either.
Edgehead10075 3 years ago
What could have Randy Savage done to Mcmahon, that has led to him being the only wrestler that has no action figure or dvd of him?
countbloodula 3 years ago
Randy Savage has had at least 4 action figures of him at least back in the day (an LJN figure, a Hasbro figure of him as Macho Man in orange trunks, A Hasbro figure of him as Macho King in purple trunks, and another Hasbro figure of him as Macho Man in the jacket, hat & pants. I never liked the lines of figures after the Hasbro ones.
But I don't know what went on between them. There's a rumor about Randy Savage and Stephanie, but it's only a rumor.
wtcvidman 3 years ago 2
i had read recently that Mcmahon Does not like Savage's name mentioned around him due to Savage allegedly having sex with Steph Mcmahon when she was a younger teenager.. possibly why Savage has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I bet Piper knew who the REAL world champion was after that asskicking Flair gave him.
Seriously, a kick ass angle with Flair stomping on Piper as if AA, Tully, and Ole were there....

This was so not a typical WWF angle.
chrischar1969 3 years ago 2
Vince couldn't take bumps when he was nice guy commentator. Mr. McMahon could dish it out though. Flair's debut was one of the most hell raising ever. If I were in 1991 now, I'd cheer him on as he kicked some ass. That was sweet, vintage Nature Boy.
journeythruthepast 3 years ago
I remember the following week on Superstars, Vince sold the chairshot by wearing a neckbrace. Why he'd need one when he took a shot on the back is beyond me. Regardless of that, however, this was a tremendous angle and it was pretty heavy stuff at the time.
MmmmmPopTarts 3 years ago
The real reason was Vince McMahon has a history of neck problems and he had hurt it a few days before the taping of WWF Supers Of Wrestling and they used the neck brace to sell what happpen the the week before and that was the first time anyone hit Vince McMahon with a chair Austin was second
ryan152342 3 years ago
that beat down flair gave roddy was hilarious i crack when i watch it the chair shot was funny as hell waaaaaap vince goes down lol
