I am a crane certifier, and manage these types of jobs internationally. I attended the Crane Certifiers Association meeting in North Carolina that was held in reference to this accident.

In this case, the accident was caused because of faulty rigging. One load strap broke in the process of lifting the crane on to its tower, which caused it to smash into the building and swing sideways, taking out the other load straps, and down it fell. The riggers were crushed below. Instant karma.

Has any operator ever shiiit his pants in a simulator? Does a simulator teach an operator how to say that they are sorry to a family missing their bread winner? Do the simulators make an operator? NO The simulators only make money for the people that make the crane simulator. They don't care about operators or the guys that work with cranes. Seat time with an experienced operator makes another operator. That's it. It's text book and f the white shirts and their computer teachers.

Nothing says safety like experience. Every non union company looking to "just get by" is going to kill. The cheap fu@@ks who by pass the oiler program are to blame too. An operator is made by seat time....Not classroom time....A classroom chair doesn't bend and flex under a heavy load. No friggin simulator will ever replace seat time. Real seat time with a real operator leaning over your shoulder as you pick up a real load. Someone has to smarten up quick.

It was not mechanical failure. The riggers did not construct the crane correctly. Favco's are very well designed cranes when put together properly. I know this because I have built about 30 of them.

Not too sure but only 10% of the bolts have to be crack tested to pass a safety check. If all the tested bolts were in the top that would explain the bottom snapping.

I'm a Gov. union worker,have been union worker at this job for that long, union failed to resolve my concerns evry time, been operating cranes for 35 years, I am supposed to take directions from a supervisor that has run cranes for probably two months out of his life, Every single time I have aproached my union, things only got worse, I have just recently filed a complaint, feeel I have thrown away all my money paid into my union. Maybe some unions do what they are supposed to do, mine has not.
