I am not against a referendum. I believe that there should be a united Ireland if a majority in Northern Ireland want it - but not before then. This is also the position of the UK government.

Ireland is free!!! The people of Nothern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have all the rights and freedoms of every EU citizen.
There are not British troops on active duty in Northern Ireland anymore and if a majority of people in Norhtern Ireland ever voted for a united Ireland it would happen with the blessings of the UK government.

The most of the people who voted in 1919 are long dead, most of the people who voted in 1998 are alive. I think it is the view of the people in Ireland today which counts.

I am not defending what happened in 1919, I just don't think the ignoring of democracy 90 years ago means democracy should be ignored today.

I feel the election in 1919 was as valid as the referendum held in 1998
If the 1919 election was respected there would have been no need for the referendum in 1998 as there would be no counties of ireland under british rule.

I understand your point, I agree that the 1919 result should have been respected and of course, if it had been respected, there would have been no change needed to the constitution. But as I said, that doesn't mean the 1998 referendum should be ignored or that the change to the Constitution is invalid.

Northern Ireland is NOT free..if it were we wouldn't be told we are apart of the UK. For us to be FREE we need to be united with Ireland and be one country..
And just because the troops are no longer active here, it does not take away from the times they were active and what they did!!!!!!

Northern Ireland is part of the UK because a majority of people who live and where born there want it to be. If a majority ever wanted a united Ireland it would happen with the blessings of the British government and people.
Northern Ireland is just as free as part of the UK as it would be if it were part of the Republic of Ireland.

For Unionists sure it's just as free, because they get what they want..they do what they want, they get help from the government on EVERYTHING, they get help from the Police because they call themselves British!
If you are a Nationalist, an Irish Catholic here you may as well be a stranger in your own country and it will be like that until we are ONE country and not apart of the UK.. you can't truly understand that unless you are one of us and lived through it.

I am sorry you feel that way, but there are many people in the UK and Ireland (and may other countries for that matter) who feel that there voice isn't heard or that they are strangers in their own country. That doesn't mean their country is not free.

I don't think Catholics are the majority in Northern Ireland, but even if they were, not all Catholics are Republicans.

I am not against a referendum. I believe that there should be a united Ireland if a majority in Northern Ireland want it - but not before then. This is also the position of the UK government.
Not all Catholics want a united Ireland - according to the NIRELND2 poll, it's only about 40%.

@Medeasbiggestfan Your correct about demographics , but people of an actual voting age now are mostly catholic aparantly anyway (i didnt go ask or anything :P) the "nationalists" were meant to call for a referendum in 2008 but didnt , no one knows why .... the origional way it was meant to be was a vote from all of britain but the unionist went aghainst it as they knew that the majority of england would vote the north back to Ireland.

I am guessing that they didn't call for a vote because they thought they would lose. Also, the result and even the vote itself would probably cause civil unrest in the delicate peace process. And if the result of the vote was just to keep the status quo, what would be the point?

@Medeasbiggestfan Well the strange thing was that most serious analysts here (not major news people) were saying it would be so close that it would be hard to call .... the fact that the vote wasnt demanded has led to a number of people having serious doubts about the peace process as a whole as they say sinn fein has "sold out" .. its strange days ahead i think :(

sry but i disagree alot with the claim that britain gave palestine to the jews.
britain did almost everything in their power to stop illegal jewish immigration into palestine, not only that but britain did not even recognize israel until 1950.
