EVERY dog is special on its way! I think it is so ridiculous to say that labrador, caucasian shepherd, GSD, pinch, cavalier charles spaniel or any other dog is no. 1.
german shepherd has a lot of qualities but so does beauceron, pointer, rottweiler, etc...
i also think that GSDs are not what they were 20 years ago.
so why to waste time comparing breeds.. ?? if we do that, we forget to see every dog as an individual and we forget enjoy it as such.
@a69a59b its a confidence issue, dogs have to be raised a certain way to have a level of confidence. Not all, but taining methods and the way they are raised affects the level of confidence they have. I have a very unconfident dog and a very confident dog, doesnt mean ur a bad dog owner. Just the way your dog has learned to see the world :O
one thing i wanted to know, why is my gsd getting dominated by every single dog? im not asking how to get my dog more agressive or tips on how to get it to dominate other dogs, i wanted to know why my dog takes punishment from other dogs and lets there heads go onntop of his. is it because hes confident and knows hes stonger, or cuz hes on a leash and obeying?
@a69a59b Do not think because your dog tolerates other dogs that he/she is necessarily submissive. I have a very dominant GSD 4 month old puppy, and she lets all the other (smaller) dogs in her class bite her in play, hanging on her neck while she runs around and she never, never bites back or growls, but she is dominant. She never gets down and rolls over for them, when she has had enough she will simply stand over them and that is that. I love that she is dominant without being aggressive.
@connexwolf It sounds like your dog may need more socialization with both people and dogs. If you have established yourself as leader you need to work with your dog in the presence of another dog teaching him that he needs to obey you at all times even when other dogs are present. It may be easier to do if you are away from your home where the dogs protective instinct is less pronounced.
My German shep can do all this. It's so much fun and he loves it. Tragically, he's very old now and we don't do a lot of anymore...except personal protection now and again.
Man work wasn't bad, could have been more aggressive, like ion Seiger shows, Obedinence work was abysmal loose heelwork and chewing the dumbell like it was a bone, go to Uk and learn proper Obedience work

I love all dogs, but I don't care what anyone says, none of them have the movement of the German Shepherd! Grace, power, agility, strength without that muscle bound foolishness! I think they are wonderful!

I got a 4yr old GSD from the SPCA 2yrs ago,she was not much to look at then,in fact I wanted another dog she was my wifes pick,she had bald spots on her fur and did not look that healthy to me then,but I wish you could see her now. I never had a dog so loyal,smart,and loving.
i have 5 GSD's and they're all protective even though they're not trained, i used to have 10 but sadly my 2 died R.I.P Blackie and Moon, blackie died of suffocation in the car cuz my neohews left him in there, and Moon died of parvo virus i miss them.
GSD's are awesome and if u train them right they are perfect dogs.

Definetally! I love my German shepherd! The best thing about this breed is even though they are tough protectors,, they are great with children! Do watch out though, they are dominant around other dogs, mine is,, but he loves cats, go figure,lol.
I have many many Belgian Malinois and also Rottweilers and Bullmastiffs, but I recently got myself a working line GSD for my home because I now have children. I think they are good with children compared to the other breeds I mentioned. I also have some GSDs in training at our K9 camp, especially for patrol work - they're more intimidating than the mals. For drug or bomb detection, I'd still go for mals anytime.
yes the perfect pet and family protecter just make sure the blood lines are not to close and the sire and dame are not related , i have a european blood line and he is a great puppy,if they are trained right the are the best , they can protect and be a pet at the same time, they are least likely to harm the family if properly trained.check my to see mine,

Think about your lifestyle and that of your family is conducive to the well being of a German shepherd or would another breed fit you better. Do you have the time to invest in a German Shepherd every day for the next 10-15 years. It's a serious responsibility.
I have a 10 year old GSD. She's a sweetheart and my protector. She knows 25 tricks, and loves kids. I didn't start seriously training her until a couple of years ago, so her obedience could be better, but I'm working with her and she's doing great. Her obedience has been improving greatly since the introduction of NILIF (nothing in life is free) to her training. NILIF is where you make the dog perform a trick before they can get what they want.
German Shepherds make great pets. Just be sure to socialize them from puppyhood. Get them used to other dogs, children, adults, etc. Also, give them regular exercise every single day without fail after their puppy bones are grown. They will follow you everywhere.

I don't think it is impossible...it is possible to have all these qualities. I had a dog, who wasn't trained as a K-9,but he was friendly,loyal to death and he protected me at age of 7months, when an Ukrainian guy tried to attack me..unfortunatelly,he died few weeks ago,so I am afraid like you,if a new dog will have same qualities. you have a shepherd? or did you have a dog before?they need to be trained precisely-shepherds..

My dog, Thor, is more than a pet, is a friend... he allways wants to p´lay with me whnever I come home there he is ready to play... he's too lovely.. I love my dog... I also have a Labrador and a Poodle... I love the three... they are my best friends...

If these are the shows in Germany, they are so hard. They take the dogs out into a field and fire a gun off and if the dog runs off the field they are disqualified.

i have an 8 weeks old female german shepherd..as of now she knw how to go to comfort room.but im beginning her to train so that if she getting bigger and older,possibly she knw about the (hand)signs that i told her today.But dont you worry because GSD are one of the greatest breed's in dog's world. Yeah, they are VERY hard headed....especially when they are young--trainer must have patience. BUT, that's part of what makes them the GREAT dogs they are (or can be). Identity crisis? Gretchin or Jessica? Pick one. You can't have both. Ha ha!

these animals are Beautiful, aren't they? Mine is older now (11-1/2), but he is the most gentle, sensitive, intuitive creature I know. i have an 8 weeks old female german shepherd..as of now she knw how to go to comfort room.but im beginning her to train so that if she getting bigger and older,possibly she knw about the (hand)signs that i told her today.But dont you worry because GSD are one of the greatest breed's in dog's world. They are not vicious..if i say they are 90% lovable,harmless and loyal to his/her master.

She, well I have a female 10 months old, she can be darn hard headed at times, I had another female yrs. back and she kept running the fence due to another sm.dog was sometimes out side. I have tryed a special coller, it works, I have tried meds, no luck.She is alot stronger then I, but with training and long walks, she is alot better, I have had Sheps. all my life. Yeah, they are VERY hard headed....especially when they are young--trainer must have patience. BUT, that's part of what makes them the GREAT dogs they are (or can be). Identity crisis? Gretchin or Jessica? Pick one. You can't have both. Ha ha!

I'd like to be a German Shepherd attack trainer someday there is good money in it if you are a quality trainer, all it takes is calm assertive behavior and patience, you can't train a dog overnight it takes time, I train bird dogs. Huge German Shepherd lover wish I had one!

these animals are Beautiful, aren't they? Mine is older now (11-1/2), but he is the most gentle, sensitive, intuitive creature I know. Sweet with my grandchildren, insistant with my goats (when I had them)remembers the people who visit us, knows who doesn't belong here & lets them know it too! He's amazing.

I have a gsd, MY dog, yet she is well behaved for my husband, not me. She walks fine with husband, not with me - trys to chase cars with me, barks at people, not with my husband. Gorgeous dogs you have. Mine is 11 month bitch

well im no dog expert but ill try to anser that based on what i know, the dog thinks that ur husband is the boss,she is second in comand and ur last. You have to show your dominance over her. You could consider a trainer or find a way to show her that. Try googling dog dominiance isue solutions or somthing
