Hey man, I'm in eight grade. I got a sax just like this (black lacquer, gold keys) and I'm just starting in jazz band. You sound pretty amazing on that! I was just wondering if you had any tips on playing, and also, where did you get your music? That's a problem for me- I can't ever seem to really get any good music!
@Taylorjbpg That's great man! Jazz is all about confidence and trusting what you play, most of all you don't need to play a billion notes to sound great, you just need to know what beats to play them on. For playing in general, try to attain the biggest fullest sound you can without playing loud. A great book filled with jazz classics is the E♭ Real Book (light blue cover). Tons of jazz songs you can play in there. Hope this helps!
WHOA. stop there. Lower end professional? id say the the cannonball saxophones are one of the high end professionals and has a nice price for the quality work put in the instruments. although thats just my opinion. :P
Thank you for your reply. I watched your video again and all I can say is keep playing. You're really good for your age I don't ever stop playing. This world needs kids like you to keep the real music going. You'll be another Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Charlie Parker. You're blessed with a gift from God. You will have a great career in the music biz.
P.S. Still like the sound of the Cannonball! Good Luck!
I only wish I was your age. I'm turning 61 on Tuesday and want to learn how to play alto sax and I've been searching for a long time the kind of sax. The Cannonball Stone Series seems to have a nice sound. Where did you purchase yours?
@djlovaglio I bought this at Sam Ash during a sale. It's not the cheapest saxophone out there, and probably not the one to start with. I would get a good student model (selmer) which runs for about 900 - 1000.
@Arag29 Are you happy with your Cannonball? What model did you buy? Would you mind telling me the price; I'd appreciate it very much? I am thinking about buying the Big Bell, Stone series alto sax that comes with 2 necks, a mouth piece, set-up and a case; it's retailed at $1900 in stores in SC. But I can try Sam Ash. Thank you for your advice.
@Skyman2596 I love your playing! Please post more; I'll be waiting. I am particularly happy from your endorsement of Cannonball because I am thinking of buying one soon. Did yours come with 2 necks, a case, a mouth piece with set-up and retail for $1900? (I know you said that you got it on sale)
I am 66, just started my alto sax lessons on a rental 6 weeks ago. I can only dream to play as well as you do!
@djlovaglio Yes, if you really want to learn to play saxaphone i would suggest buying a yamaha saxophone. Good prices out there for those. but the sound is only the saxophone but the saxophone player. Also in addition to what skyman said, the selmers are pretty good, but rather expensive to start on.
do you play in any concert or symphonic bands? if so, how does the cannonball sound on concert music? I mean does it have a dark tone or is it bright all the time. I'm thinking about getting one in the near future
@Jacourie1 Well, I only play for my school band which isn't at the greatest skill level, but the cannonball sounds great with classical music and symphonic bands.
@TripleOctaveMusic Thanks for the comment! I play with a Selmer S80 (seastar) mouth piece and I use Rico Royal (3) sized reeds must of the times. I've been playing since 4th grade, funny story about that actually. In my school you either have to take an instrument or sing, and my first choice was trumpet, then sax. When everyone was handing their choices in I switched mine to sax at the last second :). Ill try to post some more sax videos soon.

@djlovaglio Yamaha also makes a great beginner horn. I started on a Yamaha Advantage and just recently moved to a gold Cannonball like his.

@Jacourie1 The Gold Lacquer has a darker tone and the more silver/gray the lacquer, the brighter the tone.
