@oldman1911A1 Obviously a big fan, but for any Zappa fans out there, I need some help finding a track I once had on an old cassette tape. It is a purely instrumental piece, heavy with really fast onward pushing lead work through the most part. He has made so much material it would take forever to find it. Can someone give me a clue?
@bmac778 i totally get it dude. his solo in this is goddamn amazing, along with the rest of the band as always. use a youtube to mp3 website, or download an mp3 recorder program
@gordazacatitos His music is still here man. We've got it. It was his conception and he graciously gave it to us to do with whatever we please. AMAZING. Nothing more to say.
Very excellent live version of Inca Roads, from One Size Fits All, one of my favorite FZ albums. I saw him a few times in the 80s, to be honest not necessarily my favorite period for Frank's music, but still amazing bands and fantastic performances. No band has ever been as tight and forceful as Frank's: control and chaos in the same space. Thanks for the video!
I've been sitting here for the last thirty minutes trying to picture what Zappa would look like without his mustache/beard. Is it just me or would that look weird as hell?
One of the greatest moments of my life was seeing Ruth Underwood, George Duke and FZ play in a shithole arena in Harrisburg, PA in 1974, wringing every bit of sweetness out of the fonk just like this. Music is the best.
@pNeeko You don't know me, then, because if you did not only would you BEG me to take a dump on your lawn but to fart on your lunch, as well.. Trust me.
Profound musician. He's funny as hell, yet also can make the hairs on your arms stand on end at will. This is what amazes me about Frank. All other bands are too hung up on trying to be cool, when all along Frank was always the coolest from the word go. Those who like Frank know what I mean. Wish I could have seen him ONCE!!
It'll take 100 years to really get to this guy's influence. They'll look back on him like we look back on Dickens or Rakhmaninoff or the first photographers... Zappa had such a clear understanding of the technology available to him, the petards that it instigated in our behavior, and the indecent narcissism of mediocre indolents. In appreciating Zappa, someone like myself can only take it in passively - understanding it isn't what I want... I want to hear Caravan with a drum sola.
What we need is another musician that is not afraid to play what you feel and get the public to accept it and then you can write your own ticket to heaven.
In order to play with Frank Zappa, the musical criteria required was unsurpassed. Look up what Steve Vai had to do, in order to get into the band. Unbelievable. The musicians who played with FZ were wrung through the wringer and had to be top notch.
It's not all that bad that he's no longer with us, as he has left us with an enormous amount of music for us all to enjoy to eternity. I whip out an album of his in my collection for 35 years and just smile at how amusing and enchanting the music is.
well, Zappa was a brilliant musician, composer, conductor, producer, lyricist. there is no question about that.
but to be one of the top 10 greatest guitarists of all time, i mean jesus, that is something else altogether. yes, the dude ripped it up like insanely, but just think about the works of Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Rhoads, Malmsteen, etc.
@OceanderTethyseus - I don't think any of these fellows had the same technical know-how as Zappa. The range of his use of tone and effects was immense. Does that make him in the top 10...? I don't know, but he's for sure in mine.
i think the problem is that there are so many outrageously excellent guitarists in the world, that when people try to compare them all, they are forced to compare them in terms of things that are objectivley measurable, like speed, accuracy, agility, and muscular power, rather than in terms of things that are more subjective and quantifyable, like beauty and emotional evokativeness.
are you saying then that beauty is objective? do you think it can be quantified? is it theoretically possible to identify the totality of the beauty inherent in any given thing?
consider apples; we can identify and distinguish apples to some extent, but every apple is *infinitely* complex so we are unable to completely comprehend/define/quantify the nature of "appleness".
we are able to objectively compare apples in terms of only the subset of their characteristics for which we have complete knowledge.
i see that i've changed my tune a bit here. i was implying earlier that beauty itself was inherently subjective, and now i'm saying beauty is inherently objective, but that our perception of it is objective only to the extent that we have complete knowledge of the characteristics of the object in consideration - and subjective otherwise. i think the discussion quickly becomes one of definitions.
@OceanderTethyseus yes, im glad we agree that beauty is objective in nature. the position that human beings simply cant grasp the true nature of beauty is a more easily defensible position, not easily assailed. but theconcession that there IS objective beauty is all that is needed to begin a discussion about the manner in which an object's aesthetic quality can be deduced, if that is possible
Tim merely dabbled compared to zappa - I'm sure you already know the zappa connection, but Tims albums that were on zappas label used several of the mothers in the lineups but oddly not zappas percussionists at the time.
Although from memory, not many of Tims albums had vibes/xylophones on them anyway.....I think you'd be hard pushed to find a zappa album without them, going right back to 1965

If this really is a bootleg, it's one of the better ones I've heard, at least from the pre digital era. Of course I'm listening to it through Utube quality. I would pay bucks for this recording. Of course, to sell it would be highly illegal. Even posting it is. I'm not very hot on the idea of people ripping off hard working musicans, but if it we offered in a dark alley I would have to take it.
Well I'll be damned. This was one of the best gigs known to man. We actually bootlegged it but the sound quality was pretty bad. Not helped by having to put a jacket over the tape recorder every time a bouncer came past. It was a 2 hour non-stop extravaganza on his Sheik Yerbouti tour. No elongated finales at the end of every song for Frank...it was just straight into the next song. You got 2 hours of solid music - unforgetable. If anyone has any live footage from that gig plase post it...

One of Frank's greatest tunes and holy crap, HOW ABOUT THAT SOLO!!!!!! So outside, dirty, rockin' and funky at the same time. There isn't another guitarist in the world who sounded like that guy.
@Prokifiev Yes, also "Gee, I like You Pants," "Shut Up and Play yer guitar" and "Return of the son of shut up and play yer guitar" are from Inca Roads as well.
George doesn't do the vocals on this version. If it was 79, I don't think he was touring with the band, otherwise he probably would be the one to sing it
YES! Pretty nifty solo and really amazing rhythmic parts... Yes, foutupourfoutu, I believe it must've been written for George's voice - he made it more special.
Lucky I saw him 3 times - including at the old Armadillo World Headquarters. Very cool. My favorite live shows ever. Little Feat was close....

@OceanderTethyseus yes, beauty is a property of beautiful objects, therefore it exists outside of our minds and is not subjective in its nature.
snipersas 8 months ago
@snipersas
okay, but we're speaking within the context of measuring beauty for the purpose comparison in magnitude.
that implies that *human minds* must quantify it somehow.
so, even if we allow that beauty exists independently of our minds, we must still rely on our perception for its measurement.
so the question becomes whether we humans can objectively quantify beauty.
if not, then our measurement is subject to individual taste.

One of Frank's greatest tunes and holy crap, HOW ABOUT THAT SOLO!!!!!! So outside, dirty, rockin' and funky at the same time. There isn't another guitarist in the world who sounded like that guy.

He uses that same beat and riff in a few pieces!
I'm addicted to it!

Ike Willis and Ray White were only on ONE tour with Vinnie Coliauta; they were never together for a tour with both Vinnie and Ed Mann.

Reminds me of "Shup Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar Some More". Anyone know if that was originally a live solo from Inca Roads also?
Prokifiev 1 year ago
@Prokifiev Yes, also "Gee, I like You Pants," "Shut Up and Play yer guitar" and "Return of the son of shut up and play yer guitar" are from Inca Roads as well.

@SKYVOLTAGE
That isn't George.. It's Ike Willis.

As great as Ike's voice is, no one exept George Duke can sing this song...
