SOOOO...what were these cops doing that was so bad? Sometimes housing projects attract assholes-some that live there, others that dont live there but cause problems there. Its a GOOD THING to have cops patrolling through. As for the rifle, its obvious that these cops were actually looking for somebody. Possibly somebody that was known to be armed. OR, without knowing this area, maybe people like to take shots at cops here and they should be carrying a larger weapon. SO..whats the problem here?
@Dual0wner1 I HEARD THAT! AMEN! WELL SAID! really man. these people in the ghetto are nothing more to the rich, spoiled system of america than people in afghanistan
Fuckin Idiot! Im fuckin white and was born on the kitchen floor of apt 32-C. The word Nigger huh????? Then talkin bout whites? Fuckin redneck prick! Days of all that shit are over! West FUCKIN ASHEVILLE is MY home. take your racists ass onward!
@gigololounging says the queer NO ONE would entrust with their safety. PVA is a drug-addled, violence-prone mess. W/o the police, it would resemble 1980's Beirut. grow up.
All these coments of how bad PVA is....is obviously coming from ppl that DONT live here! I do however live here and have NEVER seen Cops walk thru here like in this video so for all the negative comments coming from ppl that have never even driven thru here...i guess what makes you an expert!
It's obvious that they're looking for something. They aren't throwing people up against the wall at gunpoint for no reason demanding ID. You were stupid by yourself to even give them your name. These are good cops doing a good job. I'm glad you taped this. it can serve as an educational tool to other crappy cops.
Thank goodness the police patrol this s*** hole. Could you imagine how much worse it would be if they didn't? "Cop watchers" are a symptom of the problems in society. Someone should follow them around with a camera and bitch about every single thing they do...bet that s*** would get old with them in 15 secs, but they don't have a problem doing it to others! Isn't that one of the problems? There is a simple rule: do unto others as you would have them do to do.
If that's a usual walk-through, it is sad. It's not the favelas of Rio. I'm not sure that I'm buying it is the usual walk through since the original poster has so much venom in their speech. I do like the idea of filming police when it seems reasonable, but the name calling doesn't solve the problem.
granted pva is a bad project in avl, but they dont be out like that all time. somebody prolly got killed and they was searching the area. thats tha only reason they would be out that strong. I lived in pva before and they NEVER walked around like that.
It's no wonder the pigs are armed. This is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Asheville. People get raped, robbed and killed all the time here.
I mean it is the worst of the bunch but Asheville ghettos arent all that bad in comparison to many others. I guess its all relative. In plenty of the worst ghettos in the US if police officers hang around too long they are very likely to get shot at. I do believe the AR-15 may be a little over the top but... whatever. Cops will do what they want or deem necessary. As long as theyre being nice no need not to be nice back.
I don't know what kind of area this is but it seems like people don't mind the police. It is a bit wierd that one of them has some sort of assault rifle, but again, I don't know the place. It could be like Mosul for all I know.
wow, the cop with the rifle Mindraker1 said "intimidated the copwatcher" was playing with a 5 year old towards the end. 5 year old didnt seem "intimidated." bet yall wouldnt video the gang members in that neighborhood. fuckin pussy ass hippies
Does anyone else notice that the only person acting pissy about the cops being there is the jack-off with the camera?? Everyone else is talking and laughing with the cops.
There is more than one instance of assault in this video -- namely, assault with a deadly weapon. Assault with a rifle, and assault with a handgun.
The officer intimidates the copwatcher with his handgun at 2:33, for example. The rifle is just plain obvious. If you can't see this, either you are blind, or you have been brainwashed into being loyal to police.
That female cop has her shit together. Trust me the camera man is safer with them than viewing them at a distance. You know - same guy will complain when some junkie bitch slaps him and there is no police around.
APD is a bang up department, the people in pisgah view want them there, I think what should be done is old dude wait til they leave and then do an asheville criminal watch maybe you will get more than one video. I dont think APD has bain plagued with problems like some depts have like rampart in LA or some Detroit and NYPD problems. Why dont you tape some drug deals going down get their faces and descripiton, you wont because that aint cool.
Joel: have you ever been in pva at night? have you ever been arrested? pls don't "cop-out" (that was funny). what is "reasonable force"? what is "reasonable behavior"? i see many fake and edited news reports with video (cbs has been caught and fined at least 2x). video is good evidence, but you are not advocating videoing criminal activity but videoing someone constantly IN CASE they commit a crime, and that IS harrassment, whether it is you or a policeman..see previous post about t-stops.
kenfo0, "but you are not advocating videoing criminal activity but videoing someone constantly IN CASE they commit a crime" Which is what survailence systems are for. They are not illegal.
"and that IS harrassment," Actually, you're wrong. The only thing that is illegal to do in some states is to audio-record a cop without their' knowledge or consent. Otherwise, there are no laws against videotaping police. In fact, they are (Required) by law to give their' badge numbers upon request.
an officer walking dangerous close patrol should be carrying a shotgun. he should have backup nearby with a rifle jic. rifle bullets go through buildings and should only be used if necessary. a shotgun commands respect and yet it's range limits collateral damage. the author of this video is only concerned w/attacking police, not making helpful suggestions to obtain a positive result for everyone.
the only "pigs" are you scumbags who support violent criminal activity. "why does anyone need a rifle?"? in PVA? you are an idiot. I know former drug dealers who won't step foot in there because the scumbags are in control and will kill for $5. police should open a substation in there and arrest everyone who jaywalks, loiters or spits on the sidewalk until the drug dealers and violent offenders are off the street. don't like it? go suck an egg, scumbag. your language proves your bad intent.
OK yeah I would lay off the "pigs" part if I were you. Also I would not got to PVA with out a gun too. Other then that looks like a nice walk through, making friends and checking up on things. Good Job APD
It's also a good idea to contact the local ACLU office and get as much information as one can get before heading out. Cops are not lawyers, so a lot of the stuff they say to deter you is total bunk. If you politely make them aware that you have discussed it with the local chapter of ACLU,... and have their' support... then they would be much more hesitant to make up their' own rules to keep you from rightfully observing and documenting their' actions.
Not sure if you read the first comment I made blkdefs. In it I was clear that we do need police officers. The comment had nothing to do with dismissing the need for law enforcement... but of keeping law enforcement accountable. If they are professionals, they don't mind being monitored. It's only when they resist being monitored that you discover they are not professionals at all, but potential criminals with badges.
And notice, I have not referred to officers as pigs in any of my comments.
really joel? ok if I follow you and video everything you do? you wouldn't like that one bit and would come unglued very quickly, but you want to hold someone else to a much higher standard.police are people...most are good, some are bad. treating them all as criminals is ignorant and increases pressure. what is sad about this video is that the police should be out there at night, in force until that crap pit settles down. also, note that people come out and talk to them. not everyone hates them.
kenfo0, The problem with your comment is that it ignores the fact that police misconduct is what (instigated) the Need to do cop-watching. People didn't just decide to whip out their' camcorders to tick off cops. It's never been about trying to make their' job harder. The Good cops should not mind having the bad ones ferreted out, since it's the bad cops that blight the department's name. Video is the best evidence there is at stopping the idiots who abuse the trust that's placed in them.
people DO "just whip out their camcorders" joel...you are on youtube for goodness sake! look at some of the vids! I have known people w/neg views of the police for busting them w/ "just a little coke" or "not even drunk" driving (very drunk). I know people who were not pulled (sarcasm) because they were driving 45mph through a school zone during hours but "because I'm black", etc. one must understand the background and motive before assigning sainthood to the cameraman.
kenfo0, "one must understand the background and motive before assigning sainthood to the cameraman." We're agreed on this. I don't believe in "Slanting" the evidence. It should speak for itself. However, it's not right to assign a plea for "Humanity" for a cop who behaves in-humanely. If anything, the camcorder and camera-phone age has made it very difficult to be a dirty cop. I consider that a good thing.
but we haven't agreed on that joel...you thank copwatch, who uses the term "pigs" which PROVES the slant. can you not admit that? No cop in this vid has done anything illegal or "inhumane" and yet you just used that term to justify following them around. videoing a policeman committing a crime IS good. following them around at all times IS harrasment and serves no purpose but to further divide. it IS right to assign "humanity" to a cop, because he is, and should treat you w/same respect.
kenfo0, I'm not even talking about this particular video nor the person who posted it. This conversation started under another topic. With regards to the humanity of the cop they agree upon oath to be held accountable for how they conduct themselves. Some do not honor that standard, but instead abuse it. I can say that if I were a cop, I would be glad there were people out there putting apprehension in potential bad cops. They may follow me around, but I wouldn't care as long as good came of it.
joel, you are now dancing quite a bit. we are having a discussion about this video. this video is what instigated all discussion on this page. this "copwatch" guy uses the term "pig" to describe police who are doing NOTHING illegal or immoral. you keep bringing up the mystical oath which makes them superhuman. until you take me up on riding patrol, you can not talk about how happy you'd be having people following you around with a camera at all times.
kenfo0, "to describe police who are doing NOTHING illegal or immoral" Who (May) have done illgal or immoral things had the cop-watcher not been there.
"you keep bringing up the mystical oath which makes them superhuman" No, I keep bringing up the oath they took to become officers. Please tell me you don't think that they simply signed an application and got hired as police officers.
kenfo0, "you can not talk about how happy you'd be having people following you around with a camera at all times." Actually, yes I can. If I had people following me around recording me, it would discourage a lot of potential threat that may have come against me otherwise. Plus, my willingness to allow it would go well in my favor among the public, as well as those in the department who likewise want a healthy justice system in their' city.
I gotta side with you here, see we can agree on some things. You are right about this, they should be more respectful to police. There is nothing commensurate about their pay that offsets what they risk daily to make the streets safe for all of us.
I am alarmed at the mindless anti-police rhetoric today. They have an incredibly difficult job. Some police are corrupt and they need to be brought to justice.I live in the area, and know hard people who don't go into PVA after dark.drugged up nuts assault and kill for $5 in your pocket. It disturbs me that people like joel want to treat all police as criminals, but doesn't want police to treat him in this way.guilty until proven innocent appears to be the new motto in America and i don't like it.
Right on, Ken. Sure police are corrupt. Of course, but they're not fucking superheroes. And labeling them as "pigs" isn't really respectful when they patrol your streets and protect you. Tell me something, "Copwatch" people. Where are these cameras when someone gets kidnapped? Where are these cameras when someone gets raped? Where are these cameras when a homeless person gets beat up and set on fire? Hmm? Where? Because apparently, you'd rather much record cops than the real criminals.
i watched the video: nothing occurs which qualifies as "assault" or "harassment" by any definitions of authoratative sources or reasonable people. So why don't you explain yourself. do you live in pva?
You stupid asshole. You were given a chance to explain where you saw any assault in this video, and you failed miserably. You prove you are just another stupid scumbag. Now shut your faggot mouth you punk. You are the reason society is going down the toilet.
no crying here, faggot. you are an uneducated ass. you spew BS as if it were fact, thinking if you yell it long and loud enough people will believe it. For an uneducated dumbass, you've got quite an ego. I hope you roll through pva after dark sometime. you can "cry a river" to the same police you whine about here.
You find it amusing and entertaining that you have been disgraced? takes all kinds i suppose. I have made NO "empty" insults....they are accurate and I have shown that.
You made an unsupportable statement and you have failed to back it up. Until you can, shut up you queer.
kenfo0, "following them around at all times IS harrasment" You're wrong. Copwatch has studied the law, and has even been backed up by the ACLU. They know what is legal to do, and what is not. And, as long as they are on public property, they are well within their' rights to watch and record officers in their' interactions with the public.
kenfo0, "ok if I follow you and video everything you do? you wouldn't like that one bit" However, if you shot a cop abusing their' authority on me, I would no longer consider you a nuisance. Or, if you taped me getting robbed, and the thief got put away because of that video, I would be eternally grateful to you. So, don't just look at it from a one sided perspective. Think if a cop got shot off the car cam, and a cop-watcher caught the shooter in the act. Video is indisputable evidence.
kenfo0, Another thing you should consider is the fact that cop-watch is not an organization thats "Anti-cop". I am grateful to the police for all they do to maintain peace. But, that does not dismiss the fact that there are cops who think of their' job as a great way to bully and intimidate people. Many departments have even been secretly taped as refusing to hand out complaint forms to the requestee. Proving that they do in fact "Protect their' own". So, I applaud copwatch for what they do.
it would be hard to disagree more w/your comments joel. "no longer consider you a nuisance"...stop and think...YOU admit you'd be pissed, UNLESS it helped YOU. why would a cop be different? People DO just decide to "whip out their camcorders" as evidenced by youtube! The good cops DO NOT mind getting rid of the bad ones...like you, they don't want to be judged for someone else's act, which YOU are readily doing. I don't have a one-sided perspective joel, you do. i am not a cop (cont)
(cont) but I have known/interacted w/many. i am vehemently against "license checkpts", but don't feel the need to attack a cop doing what he is ordered to do (he has to eat too). i deal w/legislators and Dept heads. Copwatch's attitude and mission are clear from the language of the poster, and it is not noble. he is the problem, not the solution. because of nonsense like this, police fight civilian oversight boards. go out and ride patrol for a few nights, then tell me ALL about the police.
kenfo0, "go out and ride patrol for a few nights, then tell me ALL about the police." Actually, your tone toward me is just as judgemental as you think the poster of this video is being. I affirmed my gratitude to the police for what they do. So, try not to make me sound like I have ill will toward them. I don't. Again, cops took an oath to uphold a high standard of conduct. There is no excuse for abusing that standard. Those who do are oft protected, which is why copwatch is necessary.
"just as judgemental as you think the poster of this video is being." no joel, the posters own words show his attitude and motive.I have not taken a "tone" w/you, i suggested you ride patrol to understand that police are guys who have to do a job. you want to hold them to an impossible standard (not being human because they "took and oath"). You posit the most egregious examples to justify abusive behavior (what you'd call it if police followed you with camera "in case you did something wrong").
kenfo0, "you want to hold them to an impossible standard" Which is my point exactly. You are judgemental. The "Standard" I referred to was the standard they (Agreed) to uphold. The city did not force them to take an impossible oath. They chose that path (Knowing) what would be required of them. If they felt it impossible to uphold the standard that inherently comes with that position, they should not even be on the force.
kenfo0, "stop and think...YOU admit you'd be pissed, UNLESS it helped YOU.why would a cop be different?" The difference between me and a cop is that the cop is a city employee, entrusted to uphold the "Standard" of the department, which is to protect and serve. The more power thats granted to an individual, the more "Responsibility" they incur as a result. Pissing them off is not the issue. If they can't handle public scrutiny, they should not be cops.
POLICEMEN are PEOPLE. MOST protect and serve, but if they are not PERFECT, you want to crucify. nothing you have typed shows any understanding of that joel. if you can't handle public scrutiny, don't live in public joel! see how ridiculous that argument is? you simply take the worst behavior of SOME police and say AHA...THAT is what police are. funny thing: that's the exact attitude of the worst police who need to be removed have of the public...ignorant generalization.
kenfo0, "but if they are not PERFECT, you want to crucify." This whole comment of your's is proof why you let emotions dictate your judgement rather than wisdom. If a cop beat the crap out of somebody because he had a bad day, and there was no evidence for the victim's claim, escalation might occur. He might get brave enough to victimize a woman, or a child. "see how ridiculous that argument is?" Actually, it's not rediculous. If cops can't handle being taped, they need to be in another job.
but joel, i am giving real examples, you are emoting. "if a cop beat"...there is always evidence. the first bit of evidence is "why is the cop beating the hell out of someone" which is illegal. w/proper training and procedure, it is not necessary to "beat the hell out of people". it IS a ridiculous argument to say "because you are a policeman, you should not object to being followed around by a cameraman especially one w/neg goals". you admit you can't take it UNLESS it suits your purpose.
kenfo0, "you admit you can't take it UNLESS it suits your purpose." I admitted no such thing. I'm sorry, but there's a vast difference between videotaping someone, and torturing them. Cops video and record civilians without permission during stops. This is necessary to protect against frivolis lawsuits or worse. Copwatch tapes police to protect against civil abuse, and misuse of authority. Again, if cops find it difficult to be taped, they are not professionals. They should do something else.
but you DID admit such a thing: "However, if you shot a cop abusing their' authority on me, I would no longer consider you a nuisance." so it was a nuisance before it wasn't. those are YOUR words joel, not mine. I never mention torture. You are emoting, not me. What I am saying is simple: you take the tiniest % of police behavior and speak as if it is the norm. Police are NOT out beating people right and left. police video a stop because a crime(albeit tiny?) has ALREADY been committed.
kenfo0, "so it was a nuisance before it wasn't" Your words were that I said I could not "Take it". That is why I said there's a difference between taping someone and torturing them. Copwatch is not doing anything illegal, like threatening the police. Being "Bothered" by a camcorder will not be a good enough excuse to lawfully put a stop to it. "you take the tiniest % of police behavior and speak as if it is the norm." Wrong. And, police abuse is not "Tiny" behavior. It reaches far.
now you are splitting words.you said it would be a nuisance. it is legal for me to call you ignorant names and disparage your mother. that does not make it ok or right or decent behavior.again, i made no statement of "torture",so stop saying it.again, copwatch using the word pig and videoing non-criminal behavior proves their unbalanced viewpt and lack of respectability. Also,I have never stated videoing the police is illegal,i said it is harassing them.if they act illegally, video it.
kenfo0, "i made no statement of "torture" You said that I said I "Couldn't Take It". I never said no such thing. I can actually take a lot of nuisance. This conversation would not have gone on as long as it has if I couldn't. So, a cop claiming that a camcorder "Bothers" him/her can just get over it. As long as police misconduct continues taking place, and departments protect those guilty, the work to publicize this stupidity will still go on.
kenfo0, "Police are NOT out beating people right and left." And, where's your evidence of this? For the record, I agree with you. I don't think most cops are out on a power trip. However, those who are need to be stopped. Many departments have been proven by their' unwillingness to yield complaint forms that they will protect their' own, no matter what they've done. So, I don't buy the idea that copwatch is doing a disservice. And, neither do good cops who want a good name for their' force.
joel: where is my evidence that police are NOT beating people right and left? you can't be serious. That is an insane statement. Now you are saying the police are guilty unless someone PROVES them innocent? that's not "slant"? yes, it is. you are being disingenuous in this post.
kenfo0, "Now you are saying the police are guilty unless someone PROVES them innocent?" In reality, you missed the point of that question. The point was this... how do you "Know" that police are not out there beating and harming people? At least copwatch has video to back them up.
you should not "applaud" copwatch, you should try to understand from both sides. have you been in PVA at night? if yes, what were you doing there and what was your experience? most people in public housing are ok, but the places are ruled by scum. check ANY city and look at violent crime distribution....a disproportionate amt is in public housing. that is called a fact. funny, libs against gun ranges...safest places around.<<another fact.
kenfo0, "also, note that people come out and talk to them. not everyone hates them." I did not imply that everyone does hate them. I don't. However, that still does not negate the need for citizens to hold law enforcement to it's stated standard. Human or not, cops took an oath to do their' jobs right. They are public servants, not abusers of the public. I know that many to most are good, honest officers. Those who aren't should not be shielded from public scrutiny, but rather... exposed.
Wow look how intimidated the residents are...joking and laughing with the cops....Happy that they are there trying to keep the gangs and druggies under control...see unlike you mr dillon they have to live there and deal with the gangs and violence.
To bad Barry Dillon of AshevilleCopwatch has nothing better to do than harass (you can call it whatever helps you sleep at night) the police patrolling one of the worst ghettos in Asheville.
PVA, Lee Walker Heights and Hillcrest are so full of crackheads and criminals that they need to be monitored constantly. And since the residents are too lazy to take care of themselves, the police have to do it. But hey, at least ACW is looking out for the crackhead's and criminal's "rights"...
jstratfan, I see no harassment going on against the officers. If they are true "Professionals" then they should have no problem being "Monitored" themselves. In the absence of strict accountability, corruption will always breed. We need police officers, yes. But we do Not need them to dishonor the trust we put in them. Since police misconduct is such a rampant occurance, citizens should make their' local force aware that they are done tolerating it.
I abosolutely agree that private citizens should not tolerate police misconduct. I have lived in Asheville all of my life and have witnessed plenty of it, however, referring to cops as "pigs" is a form of harassment. Having such a blatantly obnoxious, in-your-face, you can't touch me you can't touch me attitude while following them with a camera, is a form of harassment. It's not called "monitoring", it's called "antagonizing". Mr Dillon is not doing anybody a service by his actions.
Personally speaking, I think the instituting of an Asheville Copwatch program is a very good deterrent in itself. Not all cops are out to abuse their' power. But, there are those who think that the badge is all the license they need to give vent to their' power hunger. Those who abuse the public trust in this way are not professionals, and the camera is an excellent tool with which to ferret them out.
Boston Herald / 2.16.08—63-year-old Massachusetts federal judge Robert Somma, a resigned a week after he was arrested for driving under the influence in New Hampshire while wearing a woman's dress, heels and stockings, and carrying a purse. Somma crashed his Mercedes into the rear of a car after leaving a bar. When cops arrived, Somma was wearing makeup, a cocktail dress, fishnet stockings, women's heels and fumbled through a purse for his driver's license.
cops should have guns and they should have better guns than criminals...I am in the army and i see nothing wrong with the people protecting us to have good weapons...if it was up to me they would have fully automatic weapons...dont get me wrong there are a lot of twisted cops but these obviously arent them
the issue that come into play with your perspective is that you are in the army, you are trained to take people's lives. police are trained to use the "least " amount of force needed to overcome a situation. we don't need police who already need accountability thinking they are soldiers.
Jacobzladder-Yes soldiers are "trained to take people's lives. Guess what so are police...and yes police are trained to used the least amount of force needed..but guess what so are the armed forces. Often times military Rules of Engagement allow for use of deadly force sooner than US Constitutional law alows for but that doesnt mean the military can legally just shoot people up. Dont believe it? Google Lt Illario Pantano and take a look at how he was charged with 2 cts of murder in Iraq.
Anyone who would refer to a law enforcement officer as a pig is nothing but white trash in my book. We need police officers. I'm sure there are some who may abuse their power but why refer to them as pigs. Most police officers try and do their job. It's a job I would not and could not do myself. They have a dangerous and stressful job as it is. They do not need some white trash jerk following them around with a camera while calling them pigs.
Aside from agreeing with you about the pigs part, I respectfully disagree about the local population monitoring law enforcement. If police misconduct were not such a rampant occurance, it would be a different story. But, with video, no one can argue the point. If a cop gets taped abusing a citizen, he/she would have no defense. Just because the bad apples are the minority doesn't mean they don't have the power to destroy the department's reputation. Better to ferret them out, and GET them out.
My take on it is this. If you keep your nose clean and stay away from drugs and trashy people most likely you will never have a problem with police officers. If you live in a low income crime prone area my advice would be to stay away from those you know to be trouble and keep your ass inside after dark. My mama always said "any activity that goes on after midnight is not on the up and up" Anyone can be at the wrong place at the wrong time but most of it can be prevented with common sense. Amen!
nice vid. I'm in fayetteville NC. A lot of military police around. Gotta resist these guys. Never get angry but stay calm so they have absolutely no reason to do anything to you
SOOOO...what were these cops doing that was so bad? Sometimes housing projects attract assholes-some that live there, others that dont live there but cause problems there. Its a GOOD THING to have cops patrolling through. As for the rifle, its obvious that these cops were actually looking for somebody. Possibly somebody that was known to be armed. OR, without knowing this area, maybe people like to take shots at cops here and they should be carrying a larger weapon. SO..whats the problem here?

If that's a usual walk-through, it is sad. It's not the favelas of Rio. I'm not sure that I'm buying it is the usual walk through since the original poster has so much venom in their speech. I do like the idea of filming police when it seems reasonable, but the name calling doesn't solve the problem.

It's no wonder the pigs are armed. This is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Asheville. People get raped, robbed and killed all the time here.
There is an open drug market here most days.

@truckersteven09

Go wave a rifle at a police officer and see if it gets called "assault" or not. And take your police card somewhere else, pig.
Mindraker1 2 years ago
There is more than one instance of assault in this video -- namely, assault with a deadly weapon. Assault with a rifle, and assault with a handgun.
The officer intimidates the copwatcher with his handgun at 2:33, for example. The rifle is just plain obvious. If you can't see this, either you are blind, or you have been brainwashed into being loyal to police.

Joel: have you ever been in pva at night? have you ever been arrested? pls don't "cop-out" (that was funny). what is "reasonable force"? what is "reasonable behavior"? i see many fake and edited news reports with video (cbs has been caught and fined at least 2x). video is good evidence, but you are not advocating videoing criminal activity but videoing someone constantly IN CASE they commit a crime, and that IS harrassment, whether it is you or a policeman..see previous post about t-stops.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "but you are not advocating videoing criminal activity but videoing someone constantly IN CASE they commit a crime" Which is what survailence systems are for.
JoelJW 3 years ago
an officer walking dangerous close patrol should be carrying a shotgun. he should have backup nearby with a rifle jic. rifle bullets go through buildings and should only be used if necessary. a shotgun commands respect and yet it's range limits collateral damage. the author of this video is only concerned w/attacking police, not making helpful suggestions to obtain a positive result for everyone.

the only "pigs" are you scumbags who support violent criminal activity.

JoelJW 3 years ago
Next time you're a victim of a crime CALL THE ACLU insted of the "pigs".
blkdefs 3 years ago
Not sure if you read the first comment I made blkdefs. In it I was clear that we do need police officers. The comment had nothing to do with dismissing the need for law enforcement... but of keeping law enforcement accountable. If they are professionals, they don't mind being monitored. It's only when they resist being monitored that you discover they are not professionals at all, but potential criminals with badges.
And notice, I have not referred to officers as pigs in any of my comments.
JoelJW 3 years ago
really joel? ok if I follow you and video everything you do? you wouldn't like that one bit and would come unglued very quickly, but you want to hold someone else to a much higher standard.police are people...most are good, some are bad. treating them all as criminals is ignorant and increases pressure. what is sad about this video is that the police should be out there at night, in force until that crap pit settles down. also, note that people come out and talk to them. not everyone hates them.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, The problem with your comment is that it ignores the fact that police misconduct is what (instigated) the Need to do cop-watching.
JoelJW 3 years ago
people DO "just whip out their camcorders" joel...you are on youtube for goodness sake! look at some of the vids! I have known people w/neg views of the police for busting them w/ "just a little coke" or "not even drunk" driving (very drunk). I know people who were not pulled (sarcasm) because they were driving 45mph through a school zone during hours but "because I'm black", etc. one must understand the background and motive before assigning sainthood to the cameraman.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "one must understand the background and motive before assigning sainthood to the cameraman." We're agreed on this. I don't believe in "Slanting" the evidence. It should speak for itself. However, it's not right to assign a plea for "Humanity" for a cop who behaves in-humanely. If anything, the camcorder and camera-phone age has made it very difficult to be a dirty cop. I consider that a good thing.
JoelJW 3 years ago
but we haven't agreed on that joel...you thank copwatch, who uses the term "pigs" which PROVES the slant. can you not admit that? No cop in this vid has done anything illegal or "inhumane" and yet you just used that term to justify following them around. videoing a policeman committing a crime IS good. following them around at all times IS harrasment and serves no purpose but to further divide. it IS right to assign "humanity" to a cop, because he is, and should treat you w/same respect.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, I'm not even talking about this particular video nor the person who posted it.
JoelJW 3 years ago
joel, you are now dancing quite a bit. we are having a discussion about this video. this video is what instigated all discussion on this page. this "copwatch" guy uses the term "pig" to describe police who are doing NOTHING illegal or immoral. you keep bringing up the mystical oath which makes them superhuman. until you take me up on riding patrol, you can not talk about how happy you'd be having people following you around with a camera at all times.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "to describe police who are doing NOTHING illegal or immoral" Who (May) have done illgal or immoral things had the cop-watcher not been there.
"you keep bringing up the mystical oath which makes them superhuman" No, I keep bringing up the oath they took to become officers. Please tell me you don't think that they simply signed an application and got hired as police officers.
JoelJW 3 years ago
No, I think they got hired because they fit the same psychological profile as sociopaths.
Mindraker1 2 years ago
kenfo0, "you can not talk about how happy you'd be having people following you around with a camera at all times." Actually, yes I can. If I had people following me around recording me, it would discourage a lot of potential threat that may have come against me otherwise. Plus, my willingness to allow it would go well in my favor among the public, as well as those in the department who likewise want a healthy justice system in their' city.
JoelJW 3 years ago
I gotta side with you here, see we can agree on some things. You are right about this, they should be more respectful to police. There is nothing commensurate about their pay that offsets what they risk daily to make the streets safe for all of us.

I am alarmed at the mindless anti-police rhetoric today. They have an incredibly difficult job. Some police are corrupt and they need to be brought to justice.I live in the area, and know hard people who don't go into PVA after dark.drugged up nuts assault and kill for $5 in your pocket. kenfo0 3 years ago

You made an unsupportable statement and you have failed to back it up. Until you can, shut up you queer.
kenfo0 2 years ago
kenfo0, "following them around at all times IS harrasment" You're wrong. Copwatch has studied the law, and has even been backed up by the ACLU. They know what is legal to do, and what is not. And, as long as they are on public property, they are well within their' rights to watch and record officers in their' interactions with the public.
JoelJW 3 years ago
kenfo0, "ok if I follow you and video everything you do? you wouldn't like that one bit" However, if you shot a cop abusing their' authority on me, I would no longer consider you a nuisance. Or, if you taped me getting robbed, and the thief got put away because of that video, I would be eternally grateful to you. So, don't just look at it from a one sided perspective. Think if a cop got shot off the car cam, and a cop-watcher caught the shooter in the act. Video is indisputable evidence.
JoelJW 3 years ago
kenfo0, Another thing you should consider is the fact that cop-watch is not an organization thats "Anti-cop".
JoelJW 3 years ago
it would be hard to disagree more w/your comments joel. I don't have a one-sided perspective joel, you do. i am not a cop (cont)
kenfo0 3 years ago
(cont) but I have known/interacted w/many. i am vehemently against "license checkpts", but don't feel the need to attack a cop doing what he is ordered to do (he has to eat too). i deal w/legislators and Dept heads. Copwatch's attitude and mission are clear from the language of the poster, and it is not noble. he is the problem, not the solution. because of nonsense like this, police fight civilian oversight boards. go out and ride patrol for a few nights, then tell me ALL about the police.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "go out and ride patrol for a few nights, then tell me ALL about the police." Actually, your tone toward me is just as judgemental as you think the poster of this video is being. I affirmed my gratitude to the police for what they do. So, try not to make me sound like I have ill will toward them. I don't. Again, cops took an oath to uphold a high standard of conduct. There is no excuse for abusing that standard. Those who do are oft protected, which is why copwatch is necessary.
JoelJW 3 years ago
"just as judgemental as you think the poster of this video is being." no joel, the posters own words show his attitude and motive.I have not taken a "tone" w/you, i suggested you ride patrol to understand that police are guys who have to do a job. you want to hold them to an impossible standard (not being human because they "took and oath"). You posit the most egregious examples to justify abusive behavior (what you'd call it if police followed you with camera "in case you did something wrong").
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "you want to hold them to an impossible standard" Which is my point exactly.
JoelJW 3 years ago
kenfo0, "stop and think...YOU admit you'd be pissed, UNLESS it helped YOU.why would a cop be different?" The difference between me and a cop is that the cop is a city employee, entrusted to uphold the "Standard" of the department, which is to protect and serve. The more power thats granted to an individual, the more "Responsibility" they incur as a result. Pissing them off is not the issue. If they can't handle public scrutiny, they should not be cops.
JoelJW 3 years ago
POLICEMEN are PEOPLE. MOST protect and serve, but if they are not PERFECT, you want to crucify. nothing you have typed shows any understanding of that joel. if you can't handle public scrutiny, don't live in public joel! see how ridiculous that argument is? you simply take the worst behavior of SOME police and say AHA...THAT is what police are. funny thing: that's the exact attitude of the worst police who need to be removed have of the public...ignorant generalization.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "but if they are not PERFECT, you want to crucify." This whole comment of your's is proof why you let emotions dictate your judgement rather than wisdom.
JoelJW 3 years ago
but joel, i am giving real examples, you are emoting. "if a cop beat"...there is always evidence. the first bit of evidence is "why is the cop beating the hell out of someone" which is illegal. w/proper training and procedure, it is not necessary to "beat the hell out of people". it IS a ridiculous argument to say "because you are a policeman, you should not object to being followed around by a cameraman especially one w/neg goals". you admit you can't take it UNLESS it suits your purpose.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "you admit you can't take it UNLESS it suits your purpose." I admitted no such thing.
JoelJW 3 years ago
but you DID admit such a thing: "However, if you shot a cop abusing their' authority on me, I would no longer consider you a nuisance." so it was a nuisance before it wasn't. those are YOUR words joel, not mine. I never mention torture. You are emoting, not me. What I am saying is simple: you take the tiniest % of police behavior and speak as if it is the norm. Police are NOT out beating people right and left. police video a stop because a crime(albeit tiny?) has ALREADY been committed.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "so it was a nuisance before it wasn't" Your words were that I said I could not "Take it".
JoelJW 3 years ago
now you are splitting words.you said it would be a nuisance. it is legal for me to call you ignorant names and disparage your mother. that does not make it ok or right or decent behavior.again, i made no statement of "torture",so stop saying it.again, copwatch using the word pig and videoing non-criminal behavior proves their unbalanced viewpt and lack of respectability. Also,I have never stated videoing the police is illegal,i said it is harassing them.if they act illegally, video it.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "i made no statement of "torture" You said that I said I "Couldn't Take It".
JoelJW 3 years ago
kenfo0, "Police are NOT out beating people right and left." And, where's your evidence of this? For the record, I agree with you. I don't think most cops are out on a power trip. However, those who are need to be stopped. Many departments have been proven by their' unwillingness to yield complaint forms that they will protect their' own, no matter what they've done. So, I don't buy the idea that copwatch is doing a disservice. And, neither do good cops who want a good name for their' force.
JoelJW 3 years ago
joel: where is my evidence that police are NOT beating people right and left? you can't be serious. That is an insane statement. Now you are saying the police are guilty unless someone PROVES them innocent? that's not "slant"? yes, it is. you are being disingenuous in this post.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "Now you are saying the police are guilty unless someone PROVES them innocent?" In reality, you missed the point of that question. The point was this... how do you "Know" that police are not out there beating and harming people? At least copwatch has video to back them up.
JoelJW 3 years ago
you should not "applaud" copwatch, you should try to understand from both sides. have you been in PVA at night? if yes, what were you doing there and what was your experience? most people in public housing are ok, but the places are ruled by scum. check ANY city and look at violent crime distribution....a disproportionate amt is in public housing. that is called a fact. funny, libs against gun ranges...safest places around.<<another fact.
kenfo0 3 years ago
kenfo0, "also, note that people come out and talk to them. not everyone hates them." I did not imply that everyone does hate them. I don't. However, that still does not negate the need for citizens to hold law enforcement to it's stated standard. Human or not, cops took an oath to do their' jobs right. They are public servants, not abusers of the public. I know that many to most are good, honest officers. Those who aren't should not be shielded from public scrutiny, but rather... exposed.

But hey, at least ACW is looking out for the crackhead's and criminal's "rights"...
jstratfan 3 years ago
jstratfan, I see no harassment going on against the officers.
JoelJW 3 years ago
I abosolutely agree that private citizens should not tolerate police misconduct. I have lived in Asheville all of my life and have witnessed plenty of it, however, referring to cops as "pigs" is a form of harassment. Having such a blatantly obnoxious, in-your-face, you can't touch me you can't touch me attitude while following them with a camera, is a form of harassment. It's not called "monitoring", it's called "antagonizing". Mr Dillon is not doing anybody a service by his actions.
jstratfan 3 years ago
A lot of officers would see it that way, yes.
Personally speaking, I think the instituting of an Asheville Copwatch program is a very good deterrent in itself. Not all cops are out to abuse their' power. But, there are those who think that the badge is all the license they need to give vent to their' power hunger. Those who abuse the public trust in this way are not professionals, and the camera is an excellent tool with which to ferret them out.

cops should have guns and they should have better guns than criminals...I am in the army and i see nothing wrong with the people protecting us to have good weapons...if it was up to me they would have fully automatic weapons...dont get me wrong there are a lot of twisted cops but these obviously arent them
falcn828 3 years ago
the issue that come into play with your perspective is that you are in the army, you are trained to take people's lives. police are trained to use the "least " amount of force needed to overcome a situation. we don't need police who already need accountability thinking they are soldiers.
Jacobzladder 3 years ago
Jacobzladder-Yes soldiers are "trained to take people's lives. Guess what so are police...and yes police are trained to used the least amount of force needed..but guess what so are the armed forces. Often times military Rules of Engagement allow for use of deadly force sooner than US Constitutional law alows for but that doesnt mean the military can legally just shoot people up. Dont believe it? WNC4RonPaul 3 years ago
They do not need some white trash jerk following them around with a camera while calling them pigs.
davidshep45 3 years ago
Aside from agreeing with you about the pigs part, I respectfully disagree about the local population monitoring law enforcement. If police misconduct were not such a rampant occurance, it would be a different story. But, with video, no one can argue the point. If a cop gets taped abusing a citizen, he/she would have no defense. Just because the bad apples are the minority doesn't mean they don't have the power to destroy the department's reputation. Better to ferret them out, and GET them out.
JoelJW 3 years ago
