i was watching some program how to make a satellite, and it started to remind me of this from the 90s, so i looked it up and bam,, now im watching this bollocks to bbc1 this is better made and more interesting great stuff again..peace out
There was a channel that had a cartoon picture and a modern jazz music went all day. It was somekind of Astra satellite channel. Does anyone know the music title?
We had to pick a topic to do a presentation on at school in 96, and I chose Astra. I used this for all my research and found it really interesting back then at the tender age of 14!!
I would have stayed at 19.2degE and just retired out of service satellites as they stopped working adding new ones to the fleet, and I would have a massive reception footprint covering over 40 countries giving a truly pan-european coverage.
The anachronistic style of the film that I commented upon in part 1 continues here, but a noticed a big discontinuity in this one, in the control room: Nerd in Ties - yeh right. LOL
in '96, we had this weird little sky box with a panel on the front that rotated down, and we had to put a "sky card" in the front. Was that an astra box?
The UK Astra Sky satellite receivers usually had built-in videocrypt decoder-some under a flap like yours, some directly on the receiver front where the Sky card was inserted. European versions of Astra satellite receivers not sold in the UK often didn't come with any built-in decoder of any sort-you usually used a separate decoder because Sky channels and their subscriptions and cards aren't officially available outside of the UK.
@MARTINSTEVENS81 Don't think so, as the house in the vid was based in luxembourg it will have been a decoder for either filmnet or the dutch RTL channels(these were broadcast from The Netherlands sent to Luxembourg and uplinked to Astra at 19.2degE which beams out over much of Europe).
With one orbital position and that huge coverage that I mention, you can serve all the markets you wish across Europe without the expense of several orbital positions as currently exists.
If I started the Astra satellite it would have that orbital position BUT it would have a much larger pan-european footprint;from the Canary Is. through Europe across the mainland up through the northern and eastern and central european states up to Russia and from the United Kingdom right down southeastwards to Greece the whole of Turkey and Cyprus including the Middle East coast and from Portugal to the blacksea coasts and the roof of N.Scandinavia down to the south of the Med and resorts.
was this on ch.30, on the astra box, i am sure this rings a bell, i remember the 1st time i watched this back in 1996. it was stop for a bit then the film would start again. any more old footage from astra channels?
monumental..

I found myself putting this video on repeat and using it at a background noise while working :-)
Something about it is really comforting

Recorded on a VHS linear mono deck with wobbly audio.

What I tried to edit my comment to say was:
The music at 2:37 seems very familiar, and I'm sure it's not just because I heard it a thousand times as a kid.
Was it written specially for this program or is it from something? :-).

What I wonder since I've first seen this back in 96 is... did this family at 2:30 have two receivers ?
MegaManNeo 2 years ago
The top box on top of the satellite receiver on top of the TV may have been a pay-tv decoder for subscription channels.

IT MAY HAVE BEEN FOR PORN! LOL!

This brings back many happy memories! Does anyone know who narrator is?
crimsonkola 3 years ago
I "think" the narrator is Jon Briggs, who is now regularly heard doing the voiceovers for The Weakest Link in the UK
