As someone truly impartial in this comparison, I have to say that Celine's version is much more clean and every note in its place and no mistakes whatsoever. Renee was great, more difficult to sing on that stage outside, but she is does not have the experience and smoothness and ease that comes to a seasoned performer. There were a few rough spots, but anyone would on that stage, outside, and in the wee morning hours. Excellent job. Who recorded/performed the song first? The chicken or the egg?

Also, David Foster did co-arrange this song who is indeed the producer for both artists.

I looked up the 1987 Celine recording here on youtube that you're referring to. It is not the same arrangement and does not have any of the inflections of the two performances we're discussing. Without asking the artists themselves, or perhaps David Foster, we'll not be able to know for sure who is borrowing from who regarding these two performances rendered in this video, but my guess is that Celine is borrowing Renee's version. I could certainly be wrong though.

As someone truly impartial in this comparison, I have to say that Celine's version is much more clean and every note in its place and no mistakes whatsoever. Renee was great, more difficult to sing on that stage outside, but she is does not have the experience and smoothness and ease that comes to a seasoned performer. There were a few rough spots, but anyone would on that stage, outside, and in the wee morning hours. Excellent job. Who recorded/performed the song first? The chicken or the egg?

LOL. Celine can sing "everything" - I doubt she herself would agree with you, fortunately since becoming a mother and witnessing world events she is far more humble than you give her credit. Humility is a great thing to have, especially when it is packaged with an extraordinary talent who works very, very hard as Celine does.

Somebody incorrectly stated that Celine's performance came first. Celine's performance was aired on 9-3-06. Renee's version was out on CD two years prior in 2004. As a person in this business I understand that the same arrangements sometimes get used by different artists, but what surprises me is that Celine wasn't just influenced by Renee's performance, she really did take too much and she copied Renee. Also, David Foster did co-arrange this song who is indeed the producer for both artists.

I looked up the 1987 Celine recording here on youtube that you're referring to. It is not the same arrangement and does not have any of the inflections of the two performances we're discussing. Without asking the artists themselves, or perhaps David Foster, we'll not be able to know for sure who is borrowing from who regarding these two performances rendered in this video, but my guess is that Celine is borrowing Renee's version. I could certainly be wrong though.

I pointed this out on Classic Whitney two days ago. I was really shocked to discover that. Celine's voice is obviously better, there's no point in pointing that out. I still don't see why she had to copy that rendition. It doesn't matter if David produces for both, Celine didn't need to sing all the same runs and adlibs, regardless of the arrangement.
I'm a Celine fan, but that doesn't mean I can't criticize her every now and then. She's a diva and should show it!

You need to get your facts straight. Puh-leeeese...David Foster produces both Celine and Renee so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't David Foster's idea to "steal" Renee's style for this song.
