Man the memories ! Back in the early 80's I was a youngbuck in the Marines stationed in J'Ville,N.C.,on Sundays we would head down to Kingston to the skating rink and after the skating was over we would jam with the cute little country hunnies to planet rock and the other fly 12 inch cuts that were so great back then!
@Blakontop did the same at home in Richmond VA! But made it to J'ville and Kingston in 89-91. Yut Yut. I cant get this silly grin off my face and my head wont stop bounce!
Damn 1983 the 9th grade....this was the shit for 2 years at least!!!! neighborhood center dances....Sun skate and the Skating PALACE....pop lockin in the hall at lunch...playing this on my big assed radio.it had wheels on the side, bumpin Planet Rock...(back when EVERYBODY brought a big assed readio to school) lol
Yo I remember the summer of '83 visiting fam in the projects,my cousin took me down to the center, Afrika Bambaataa was bumping for the last 2 summers, everyone was break dancing. Big ups to the South Bronx, Rock Steady Crew, and Phase 2. Can't forget The Roxy even though my Peeps and I couldn't get in.
Whats up Original Hip Hop , Boogie Down Bronx...Yo BAM !! Remember the anti Crack movement ;South Bronx river projects community center? Me (DJ Sadik and Shawn Cool Tee..I had B boy Productions in effect holler. Bronx river baby!!
Yea..Kraftwerk is the template, but the break "It's the sure shot" is the template for the Beastie Boys song, Sure shot. That's hip hop. One door opens another.
@1SirMachinery Absolutely dead on you are about Kraftwerk. When Kraftwerk came out they introduced electro-pop like nobody had ever heard it. Way ahead of their time with tunes like Computer Love. This was before computers were even thought of as being something people would have in their own homes! I always thought of Kraftwerk as being one of the "special" Euro groups, they stood out as being wayyyyy out there and distinct.
For better or worse, right or wrong many consider this the quintessential hip hop jam. The one that started it all. I remember debating this jam, its value, impact and the direction of music with friends when this came out. One thing for sure you could not get away from it and the proof was in the pudding. Put the mutha fucka on in the club/party and guess what....EVERYBODY TO THE DANCE FLOOR!
Though this might sound like a travesty if you don't like dubstep.. imagine a dubstep remix of this. I like the idea because the bass on this is actually pretty sick, but it doesn't hit hard like modern hip-hop. I mean it'd have to be slowed down but.. does anyone else like that idea?
@tillzzyy its funny that u mentioned that cuz I've been lookin for this song and didn't know the name till I watched Ali G popping to get pass the laser room lolz
Its goin down! Breakin down cardboard boxes right now. Wheres my plastic tape kids? Daddy bout 2 show u how we use to get down! And at 40 years old.... Hope I don't BREAK nuthin lol, no pun intended!!!
AHHH, WEARING MY PUMAS, FAT LACES, MY NAME ON MY BELT BUCKLE, AND OF COURSE VARIOUS COLORS OF LEE JEANS. THESE KIDS WEAR THERE PANTS PRATICALLY DOWN TO THERE KNEES THESE DAYS. WHAT KINDA OF STYLE IS THAT ?!! OH YEAH, DON'T FORGET THE BOOM BOX... : )
This is when Hip Hop was fun....not this crap they have turned it into. This brand of Hip Hop was fun for everybody....not stupid, disrespectful lyrics. Music like this made us feel good back in the day. I don't know what happened....all this demonic music we got out today. I can't think of one rapper out now that can touch this.
@violenthues well you call it 'intersecting' i'd call it blatently ripping off another artists sound just as they are breaking through into mainstream and thus stealing the credit for all their hardwork and innovation. I believe Kraftwerk had to sue Africa bam batty boy for a breach of copy right so i get the feeling that Kraftwerk themselves didn't exactly share your idea's on 'intersecting' either.
At my school (Lincoln Park!) we played this and Rock It by Herbie Hancock in band as part of our open house performance. It was so much fun! Everybody loved it, and surprisingly almost everyone in the band knew the songs beforehand. We need more good music like this. I know a bunch of people who would rather listen to this than the crap they play on the radio and call music now. These 14 and 15 year olds know good music :)
@LuvingMusicAlways As someone who grew up when this jam came out & father of (3, one teen)...it pleases me to see comments such as this...thank you for keeping GOOD music alive & I wish you and your band mates much success....
Afrikaans Bambaataa need to get down on his knee's & thank kraftwerk for this. "Trans Europe Express" & excerpts of "Numbers" are both sampled in this song. He did it justice though because this is truly a classic. Without him i probably would've never even gotten into Kraftwerk.

@str8outtatexas1 Hello, I like to introduce myself. I'm a 28 Year young Guy from Germany. I guess what happend to Hip Hop, is what happens to every kind of innovative, new Music. It becomes a Business and all of a Sudden, Creativity is out of the Window. (Sorry, my English ain't exactly Harvard Quality, isn't it!)
@str8outtatexas1 In Germany there was once an independent Rap Label named Aggro Berlin. It was the first German Gangster Rap Label, but really innovative. They existed from 2001 - 2009. They had over 100 Releases and sold over 2 Million Records. They were the most successfull Independent Hip Hop Label in Germany ever. By the Time of 2007 they made a Deal with a Major Label (Universal) and 2 Years later they quit. That's how the Industry is fucking real Music up
@str8outtatexas1 I thought, since you live in Texas, is Swisha House Records still alive. Or did they disappear? Because I knew that they also were very innovative. (That's what I heard)
Sampling thanks to Kraftwerk always & forever the first ones to give birth to the background beat for planet rock & afrika bambaataa!!!!!! Trans Europa Expresssssssss!!!!
