  • Talk about a short memory..

  • ☼ SOLAR ♫ LOVE ♥ Liberty ∞

  • was this performance the exact one that was also seen in the early 80's aussie film One Night Stand?

  • I was JUST thinking about that when I saw your question, s, YES it was

  • sold his soul..are there any political australian bands rappers around now who can do a payback song to garrett = gillard..??

  • He went to labour cos he could do alot more good there than as a green, think of the big pic morons..

  • Lesson to kids never listen to lawyer or a politican

  • Peter Garrett apologized to President Obama for ............ the lyrics to US Forces.

  • @nzoz1983 Are u sure?? Are u talking about the song US forces?? Find that hard to believe. Lets not talk the man down, he is really caught between rock and hard place. I heard Peter and his total refusal speech on radio after the ALP agreed the trade to India of Yellow Cake . He aint sold out. Visit his HP. Must say, it aint funny the ALP is all about less carbon emissions now. But they dont care about nuclear waste, that will take hundreds of years to break down.???

  • 1982 Peter Garret denunces American military interference and imperialist repression.

2010 Peter Garret supports American military interference and imperialist repression.

Short memory, must have a, short memory.

  • @JustinFromSydney

"2010 Peter Garret supports American military interference and imperialist repression."

How /In what way did he do that?

  • short memory...ye right Peter...loool

  • so political yet so pretty :) love it

  • throw away all of your past and what you ever stood for , check out the new minister that sang all of this what a waste of talent

  • Has anyone noticed he looks exactly the same as Voldemort.

    VOLDEMORT'S HUNGRY

  • love it

  • wish they would form again would love to see them in concert :) :) :) please just one last time lol awesome band

  • This is some of the truest art i have ever seen, this documents the band in top form and I'm glad many generations of people will find this.

  • je suis d'accord avec toi wicks69 !

  • sigh stick to what you can do best "Peter Garret"....and thats belt out great aussie tracks not shit aussie politics...

  • pity such a wise mind got fucked up by labor politics

  • @hadji40 Pity you don't stick your head up your arse...Oh, wait...you have....

  • GARRETT SOLD HIS SOUL FOR SOME PIECES OF SILVER. Just goes to show how politics and power can corrupt someone who we thought was beyond currupting. Hope he's happy with his betrayal. He will never be seen as genuine again...just another idiot politician, a liar and con artist.

  • I just realised he looks like Voldemort.

  • wow... incredible

  • Love the music and the message.....just remind me is this the same guy who approved the Tamar Valley chlorine bleach paper plant as environment minister in the Rudd government?

  • Have to study this song for English. Personally I hate it, but the meaning behind the song is great.

  • Garrett is a useless cunt, killed many with his insulation plan and got off scott free, fuck the dog.

  • @k1kur455 If by many, you mean less than half a dozen and by killed you mean dodgy companies decided to rort the government regardless of worker safety for the pursuit of dollars. Garrett cannot be held responsible for corporate greed, political competence aside.

  • @1nown well spoken sir. The most thoughtful and articulate comment on the whole debacle ever.

  • @k1kur455 heproposed the plan but it takes 8 stages of govt to pass a bill so many people also agreed.

  • ♥ #Liberty ☼ #Libertad ♫ #Freiheit ♪

  • retire from politics so you can tour again please

  • great musician, shit politician

  • ...Osama had Short Memory crankin on his iPod when they got 'em

  • Comment removed

  • This is music made with passion and effort, not the nowadays shit...

  • Everytime i listen to the Oils, gotta say - Dig Yaz!

  • Great song. Great band.

    Loved seeing this again.

Read a few negative comments, but they're entitled to their opinions.

We were certainly spoilt when it came to great Aussie music in the 80's.

  • fucking sell out

  • Lovely

  • Garrets head reminds me of a bag of assholes

  • politics messes with good people :(

  • Also, the greatest band Australia has ever produced.

  • By the way - during the supposed ' insulation debacle' less people died installing batts than during any 12 month period prior.

    He actually saved lives.

  • @Arourky Redneck dumfuck.

  • He doesn't support "American..." he votes against it every time - it's the party.

    What have you done?

Stand up, do something. Oh, that's right - nothing better than whinge on youtube.

  • I always thought this song was recorded in 1992. In fact it's from 1983, almost a whole decade before.

  • Screwed over by Kevin Rudd, used as a scapegoat for the Rudds slapped up insulation debarcle.

Could have been the Australias greatest Prime Minister.

  • Brilliant saw them live here in new zealand around 1980, unreal.

  • Has there ever been a more potent live powerhouse than the Oils?

I doubt it, and legions of beer soaked Sydeny lads (now older like me)

    would no doubt agree.

But then occasionally, an ominous brooding side would manifest and give you

    time to think and breathe.

    Magic.

  • CLASSIC OILS

  • CLASSIC OILS

  • F*****g GOLD!!!

  • I really like the guitar solo and piano solo in this song

  • best Australian rock band live in there prime ever. full stop end of story. so much energy, the vibe the music the passion and rob hurst just sweating it out on the drums

  • my favourite band-simple

  • While everyone finds the cuss words like the F word to state their disgust.. I use the ...."destruction in Cambodia" line when something goes tragically wrong...

  • How true is this song?

  • The most missed band in my life. The many shows I saw were still not enough.

  • Martin Rotsey = Legend...

  • hwoah. (spine shivers). It's funny cause he had okay muscles back then but could never seem to move his legs.

  • Garret in the labor party..SHORT MEMORY...stooges

  • this song is timeless

  • Man, that's some shit house blue screen work!

  • I know he sold out but the Oils still rock!

  • @TheGoodThanks he didnt sellout for f sake he's going the next step to get his message across and do his bit

  • Well Garrett can't be responsible for the whole world. If you want things to change then make a contribution

  • Seen this band so many times & still love 'em

  • thats filth!!!

  • yeh ole pete was a bit green ,but once he could see the forrest as he could only see the trees in his day, turn coat yes , he knows who the dady is , and if your trying to work that one out.there is hope for u like there is hope for him, but good music top man

  • Aussie Guns!

  • Are the Abos included in there?

  • Those who cry "turncoat" shame on you. You only serve the greedy political elite who manipulate public thought to target good men like Peter, rather than their power-hungry selves. We need more men like Peter in politics and each time he gets attacked it discourages decent people from entering the political doman.

  • we haven't all got short memories, i'm so disgusted in you garrett, 4 died becoz or u, 2 could have been saved if u did the right thing, u weak prick....sucking up to rudd

  • i don't understand why Peter join the government... what happen with his music & ideals?

  • Very apt song

  • Peter Garrett has a short memory, fucking turncoat.

  • why couldnt he bring that attitude to his political career.great song but bloke has fukin joined em !!

  • The absolute BEST LIVE Shows of the !980's!!!!!!!

  • whatever the fuck i am, i always return .... to listen to this song

  • Stop pushing political crap, this is all about great music..

  • Best Live Band Of All Time!!

  • awesome!

  • BEST Australian album ever...enough said!

  • WOW--I just found this tune for the first time...great stuff!

  • Great music...Great band....just remember they're entertainers...as a politician he is a diplomat 1st....which means diplomacy. They are not LEADERS anymore as some would like to suggest!

  • well Peter you really are a "short memory" now.

  • you go Martin Rotsey

  • and a short memory

  • we are all a 16/th something

  • as a rock band as good as any live band ive seen

pete garret as a politician well just like the rest of them no integrity at all

  • @34crikey yep. A once great rock singer is now a vacuous, life wasting pair of tits on a bull.

  • Fantastic band and fantastic performers. Although I would like to think that Peter Garret's foray into politics is more a mid-life crisis than a genuine belief in what he is doing.

  • My Favourite Band!

  • Perfect Song !

Music & lyrics are awesome !

  • Peter Garrett would never ever betray Australia, he is the ultimate Aussie, and no way would he change from his beliefs as a musician, and for Australia as a citizen., I trust him & I know he will do the right thing in all he can, just believe in him.

  • Peter Garrett HIMSELF has a short memory....

He has sold Australias Conservation out and deserves to be exposed as the traitor to Australia that he really is.

NO MORE URANIUM MINES PETE. Aussies wonder WTF is up with you when you cannot protect our environment anymore.

  • devise a better fuel system than fission.

at least we dont fight wars over uranium.

  • your right about garrett he'd rather please the labour party now than go with the values and beliefs of the oils in 80's sell out

  • yeah god forbid he try to steer the tide rather than stop it.

  • In saying what i said HE DID NOT KILL THOSE MEN the stupid fucking installers killed themselves garrett wasn't there passing the batts to them in the celling he is just a politician

  • Conquistador of Mexico The Zulu and the Navaho The Belgians in the Congo, Short memory Plantation in Virginia The Raj in British India The deadline in South Africa, Short memory The story of El Salvador The silence of Hiroshima Destruction of Cambodia, short memory Short memory, must have a, Short memory Short memory, must have a, Short memory
  • Amazing band, Garrett is an amazing person. Saw hims speak in 1990 at my uni campus and was totally inspired. He has done a lot for the causes he believes in but short of overturning the economic system we are all dependent on, what is the bloke going to do?

As to The Oils...saw then in 1987 and it was totally phenomenal. These tunes will be remembered long after the names of the greedy bastards who got us into this mess are forgotten.

  • @Didgebaba Garrett should dismiss politics and go back to where he belongs, and can make a difference. Preaching to us plebs with a microphone and an awesome band!!!

  • @Didgebaba "what is the bloke going to do?" Sell out? oops, been there done that, f*ck*d up....

Think more deeply. I can't believe I voted for this d*psh*t when he ran 4 the NDP in 1983...

Disaapointed with the racist propaganda on CD and electrocuted apprentices... in history.

Australia belongs to all people who live here. Don't let it get stolen fro under your feet...

  • The opening chords still give me shivers- the 10-1 album was so so so good.

  • is that the bass player who owns "wicked weasel" the bikini shop in byron bay?

  • Just listen to the music, listen to the beat, listen to Peter & Rob, just listen,,They were the most wanted band ever, back then, full of the most wonderful music ever, but also, so clever & every song had a message. Will always love the Oils's.

  • Garrett's not the government, but at least he is now inside - rather than singing from the sidelines. The Australian Labor Party is one of the oldest and toughest political beasts on the planet. Go Peter, go.

  • All these dumb Aussie greenies like Garrett in labour. They let in 400K people a year and this country can't support it.

  • And before u bag him out, have any of you guys atteneded anywhere near the 500 plus environmental protests that Mr Garret has? dint think so , maybe u guys that wanna bag him out shud do more to better this world!

  • At least he is in a position where he can make sum small changes for the better, i mean come on lets face u guys know as well as i do that once ur in politcs thats it very hard to make radical changes, but he is making sum.. dont give up on Garret call him a "sell out ", or bad mouth him he is truely one of Australia's great environmentalists! If you want to make cange its upto you, we all ave choice, and its our right to elect whoever we see fit for government, so make the right choices!

  • YES!

  • If only you did. Did you drive here? Is uranium a better solution?

Of course it is. Along with every other choice but oil.

  • if only he stayed true to his words...

  • I,ll never forget the Oils concerts i went to -WOW - Musicians and Surfers care much for our Environment - Plant trees please

  • hahaha

  • PG sings about himself here. I used to love this band. You've sold out mate. A uranium mine approved? Weren't we all going to die in a nuclear holocaust in the 80's? Short memory must have a.... And joining the labour party? what happened to "it's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees"?

  • Like BONO in his private jet...

The only Green issues these guys are about is the Greenback.

  • Cold war's over man, get with the times the new scare tatic is arabs and economy.

  • Rock on Pete

  • The first live band I ever saw, I was sixteen, I left the pub soaked in sweat and my hair standing on end. It was so loud and the pub was so small that I couldnt hear properly the next day. And they still sound as good today.

  • SHIIIIIT @ Play it ouder boys and girls. PG is pumped here,

  • looks a bit like voldemort lol

  • HAHAHA spot on!

  • lol =)

  • That is exactly what I sed lol

  • Judging by Peter Garretts approval of a new uranium mine to be owned by a subsidiary of a nuclear arms company, he seems to have a Short Memory.

  • my favorite

    words,music,just perfect

  • We were lucky to live through this era when we had so many good aussie bands.... There was a flood of them.

something that is really lacking now :(

    Nother great NZOZ classic..

  • Prophetic? - "A smallish man, Afghanistan. A watchdog in a nervous land. They're only there to lend a hand...Short memory."

  • As the ALP obediently ramp up war in Afghanistan, I signed in to make exactly this comment. Well noted, evensteven.

They're only there to lend a hand!

    short memory!

    Peter Garret of the ALP

    must have a

    very conveniently

    short memory.

  • The more things change, the more they stay the same....

I grew up to this music, and now I have a boy of my own he's growing up to it. Twenty something years later and the lyrics, sadly, still hold true.

  • No they were singing about America hellping the afganis fight the USSR. What is happening now is the coalition of the willing helping to oust a entrenched extremeist regime taliban. Same country, diferent conflict. Not all war is pointless. I say fight and win, and support your country and their allies c'mon hippies. The Taliban wouldn;t allow midnight oil songs that's for sure.

  • Bernadotte

Peter Garret sung about Americans "helping the Afghans". True the government is pushing it over now. But were fighting terrrorists and people who would gladly blow your brains out infron of little babies and children

  • savepenguintrees

I wish you were right, but its an illegal war, this isn't about keeping some sand dwellers in order its about the US exerting its policies and dividing ruling and destablising the middle east.

The whole basis for war is built on fabricated lies, in this respect they are guilty of war crimes. Iraq never threatened the US or the UK with War but they attacked and killed the peoples there.

Militants will come across faster than we can kill them, we can't win.

  • No, just your youth / un-education. There were a lot of things happening in Afghanistan before the most recent conflict.

  • @evensteven69 Umm, that's about an event that had already happened when the song was written, Russia's iinvasion of Afghanistan in 1979. At this time the Soviets were lead by Leonid Brezhnev, who was 5'8".

  • @jonathonthrowaway

America started the Russian Afghan war in 1979 with a CIA intervention in Afghanistan.

After that war Unocal wanted to build the Trans Afghanistan Pipeline.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai worked for Unocal.

The Talibans biggest benefactor was US.

The Taliban reneged on the pipeline deal then the US invaded.

  • @evensteven69

On July 3, 1979, Carter signed a presidential finding authorising funding for rebels in Afghanistan as a part of the Central Intelligence Agency program called Operation Cyclone, which would include the massive arming of Afghan mujahideen to destabilise the Afghan Government.

That was 6 months before Soviet deployment in Afghanistan on December 27, 1979

  • @evensteven69 the americans were funding the afghans in their war against the soviets when this song came out. prophetic?

  • @Brendo707 Ahhhh, Interesting. Thank you for that enlightening tidbit.

  • 1982 Peter Garret denunces American military interference and imperialist repression.

2010 Peter Garret supports American military interference and imperialist repression.

I like 1982 Peter Garret better.

  • @lesdoyle2000 he must have a...... "short memory"

  • @lesdoyle2000 - So the times are the same as they were in 1982? People can't change? I loved the NBA when I was 10 but as I got older I've realized it's just not the kind of basketball I want to watch.

  • Comment removed

  • @lesdoyle2000 Obama's an imperialist murdering thug just like Bush. It's in the president's job requirements. I'm sure Mr. Garrett understood the terms of his job when he signed the contract. You take the devil's dollar, you do the devil's job. BTW, I remember listening to this song the night George HW Bush invaded Iraq in 1991!

  • @SweetSweetWaldo

I liked how George HW Bush sold the Iraq war by paying Hill & Knowlton $14 million to create the Nurse Nayirah propaganda. Short memory.

  • @Brendo707

the Americans were funding rebels in Afghanistan against the elected Government which lead to the Afghan USSR war.

  • Peter, no finer ambassador. Movement forever.

  • love it

  • And don't forget The Swingers featuring Bones Hillman. Check out the movie Starstruck.

  • I hope Peter Garret doesnt have a short memory.

    ~he is now a politician u know!

  • Geez guys ... if there's any Aussie band that can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck it's gotta be the OILS !!! Great post thanks!!

  • Most aussie bands from this period do the same to me.... perhaps not as greatly as the Oils, but most popular Aussie bands during this period do it for me... Triffids, Go-Betweens, Oils, Divinyls, Matt Finish (some moments).... great time, great place, great music!

  • Don't forget groups like Hunters & Collectors, Birthday Party and INXS (at that time) :-)

  • And dont forget The Angels and Cold Chisel.

  • And don't forget Rose Tattoo, Split Enz (I know, Kiwi), Dragon (Kiwi), Sunnyboys, the Church....

  • Ah dude, your taking me down memory lane now,I grew up listening to all those bands.Good Times!

  • @nzoz1983 Love the Church. Gangagang, Go Betweens, Pseudo Echo and Wa Wa Nee.

  • @nzoz1983 radiobirdman!

  • @cobboGHS91 The Saints, cold Chisel, The Angels, Hard Ons, AC/DC, Billy Thorpe, Mi-Sex... I put them all up on my nzoz channels.

  • @jamezheart but garret doesnt have any hair

  • @jamezheart . every time i hear these songs i remember a time simpler and with more trust, i just wish Pete had the same convictions.where have our true heroes gone, pity this rock god had to succumb to the "system" i die a little more each time i hear he signs off on another forest to the "LOGGERS" tragic sold his soul for fame...... I loved this man.......... and his band of merry men....????where are their convictions now the Us has us totally in its grip????!!!!!

  • @icecreammanoz i belive he saw there music while great wasnt doing as much as he could as a polition and do more for the country he still is passioate about the man has the resecpt of millions around the world someone who has been this active threw the years doesnt stop simply cause hes a poly he is still as active as hes allways been just going about it quiter before anyone says anything yes i no i cant spel deal with it

  • Go the OILS...garrett should not have become a political leader a big mistake..Reunite the OILS & tour Aust & NZ

  • ...the pulp mill in Tasmani-yah, short memories...

  • i know, it boggles the mind...

  • midnight oil<3

    amazing band!

  • Now Peter Garrett is sanctioning uranium mines - sold out

  • This band had essence. Lyrics. Music. Melody. I miss it. I'd like very much to wake up one day and have the notice that they come back to play again around the world. The nowadays bands are true trashes.

    MIDNIGHT OIL FOREVER!!!

  • Midnight Oil are playing again in March! Though only a few shows in Australia - fundraisers for the bushfire victims.

  • The lyrics in relation to Afghanistan are as true today as they were back in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

  • That is a young Jim Moginie there :-P

  • "The Soviets in Afghanistan", refresh my memory, who are in there now?

  • lol dude nice call

  • Champ..I'll think you;ll find the lyrics are "a smallish man afphganistan"
