I think people get too carried away when he reviews a band that they love. I love Manchester Orchestra. I think they're amazing Live. But, I don't think this was the album they expected it to be. I feel a bit let down by this album.
Personally i like the older material more. But that is all opinion. Love the band still. But, I think this is them taking the next step (like brand new did) into that more "radioheadish" type music. I don't know. I hope they prove me wrong.
@xTheFBP Dude, That Brand New album is one of my favorites of all time. Check out The Dear Hunter, La Dispute, Portugal The Man, Modest Mouse, Cage The Elephant... You should really like some of those bands.
@musicismyfavorite777 I've got La Dispute debut album and I have a couple Modest Mouse albums. I'll check out the others, thanks! Have you heard Republic of Wolves? They have 2 EPs and one album that are all really good. Check out His Old Brances EP!
Insanely amazing album. I'm surprised by your review but I guess that's just your opinion. I wouldn't say it's my favorite attempt by the band, but they're definitely one of my favorite bands. You say that they've taken what's nice about indie rock and changed it, but that leaves the question that they were never indie rock to begin with. They're more alternative/progressive in my opinion.
I really like this record, especially track 6, "Virgin" which strikes me as a much more intelligent and poetic version of My Morning Jacket's "Holdin' on to Black Metal"
Although, like yourself, I'm not crazy about every string and horn arrangement on this one, I feel they don't detract too much from the rest of the wonderfulness this LP has going on. Strong 7 light 8.
Do you know any other aspects of what music? His voice in itself is an instrument. The different sounds and feelings behind it really makes it UNIQUE. And what?...Your not going to talk about the drum work, which personally I find BADASS. At least review all of it. Or can you not appreciate it.............Im gettin too worked up over this.
this review is awful. it sounds like you just read other reviews and said exactly what they said about the album. i don't know if i like it as much as mean everything to nothing, but a 4? really? its at least a 7 or 8. it's such an honest record and you've lost all your credibility in my eyes by giving this such a low score.
I have to disagree with you. I thought that this album has been their most thought out and well put together. I felt that the lyrics were extremely honest and Andy finally got his vocals together. And at first I was like, "only ten songs?" but then when I listened to it, it made every song stand out in its own way and have it's own feeling.
This album really doesn't compliment the rest of their body of work. They traded production for rock. Good review, I would've given it a higher score because I like some of the songs you frowned upon, but still. excellent as always.
Manchester Orchestra was one of the many bands that got me into alternative music. Before I heard those guys and the other bands you listed, I have no idea what I was listening to. Believe it or not, I used to have a life - and music wasn't a big part of it.
Thankfully I became a loser and now obsess over it.
I look back and it's like...what did I find so awesome about M.O. in the first place? I don't remember :( I still love Bright Eyes and Modest Mouse, but this album was pretty boring.
Iv been a fan of M.O. For years now. Personally when I first heard them I was like wtf is this? And put it on my filler list for CDs. They have now grown to be my favorite bad. I commend you for your honesty red shirt bitchin glasses guy. I think for someone to love this cd they have to be a die hard fan (meh) or someone who enjoys main stream music (that hurts to say)
I hate to be that guy, but I would expect someone who claims to be a "music nerd" to have appreciation for an album like Simple Math. You are the only reviewer giving it less than an 80% positive rating, I know it is only your opinion, but to find a band putting out honest material and sticking to their guns, like Manchester Orchestra, these days is hard to come across. Pure, honest music, how could you not like it...
@jhipple52386 haha. ok,,,,real tough talking shit on youtube. grow up. i was merely disagreeing with him. If youll notice i put "to each his own".......but anyway i can tell you are a really classy person and fine American. So i guess youre right.
I think you're good, I won't deny that. But I think that your review is ridiculous. This is by far just another step into maturing for them. they take from older releases with the songs that you felt weren't good. Mighty, Pale Black Eye, April Fool, and Virgin feel like built upon ideas of songs off of METN and I'm Like a Virgin. but the rest really feeds more off the calming or chilling feeling and the others feed more off of a very pop and uplifting sound (i.e. Pensacola). I love this album.
I love the title track so much, easily my favorite MO song. Even though you've got some time before these come out I'd like to see you review The Dear Hunter's "The Color Spectrum" and Portugal. The Man's "In The Mountain In The Cloud"
Love your reviews Anthony, but I have to say that I really hated how your swiftly dismissed Death Cab, Bright Eyes, D Plan, Built To Spill, Wilco, Grandaddy, and Modest Mouse all in a few seconds. Those definitely aren't bands that sound dated today as you say that Manchester tends to.
Hey Anthony, are these guys more of a 'rock band' than British Sea Power ? If you say no, I wont waste my time looking for this (as you say so, not worth the trip).
I always hear people referencing a "false sense of drama" with Manchester Orchestra. Like they are filling their songs with some type of melodrama.. However I just cannot see the difference between the emotion they put in their songs and the emotion other bands use... I think it is a tad immature and assuming to assume that just because he vocals croon at this spot or crack at this spot, that Andy is somehow "faking" the emotion. I think the album is a masterwork. To each their own huh?
@keegan182 It's not so much faking the drama, as assuming the listener is connecting to the song as much as he (Andy Hull) is. That combined with this sense I get that the lyrical content/themes of the song simply aren't that interesting and need this kind of over the top(imo) dynamic in the music in order to give them impact. I was disappointed with this album in general though, I was a big fan of METN. I'm glad you dig it though.
dude i hope you see this but you really are very very good at what you do, i enjoy each video you put up whether i like the band or not which speaks volumes of what your doing. Keep doing what your doing and ill be enjoying. thanks bro
I think the early 2000s was a great time for indie rock to sound really good with bands like DCFC and the Decemberists, who are still making good "indie rock" today (you still like them right Anthony?) These days really enjoyable indie rock is few and far between, in my opinion, and Manchester Orchestra just seem to wear out their indie rock welcome for me.
Tinie Tempah Disc-Overy looking forward to it even though i hate written in the stars but I heard his other stuff and its actually has some taste to it looking forward if wanna take a look at it FOREVER :D

I enjoy watching your reviews even if I have no fucking idea what band you're talking about. I enjoy the way you do them and how you are very thorough. Keep it up!

I feel like in your attempt to keep churning out album reviews you honestly don't grasp the meaning, emotion, or even simply the talent that comes out of some of these albums...not saying Simple Math itself is a 10/10 but the fact you would give it as low as a 4 is honestly baffling
I'm biased to Andy Hull and love the Simple Math song... a... lot! I heard inspirations of Pink Floyd coming out in a good way here. And Pensacola is a great 2 for 2 on this album but I feel I need to listen to the rest now with your review. I am usually right there with you on your reviews but wasn't expecting a 4 on this one but maybe I need to put my bias on the shelf and try again.
I would like a review on Bad Books sometime... to dispell my bias once again I fear. :)
Also, you've gained a pretty good following that when ever you dish out a low rated review you don't have to constantly apologize for it with IMO's and such. Your fans know how you do and know you don't think this review is definitive of how good the album is or isn't. Just go for it, we won't get mad :D
I dont know who they are (and thats why i love this channel so much) but I just finish listening to "Pensacola" and I liked it. Im gonna check them out, thank you Anthony!
I like it when I disagree with you. For me this album was a great progression for them. I had just finished the new Man Man album (which I would love you to review) and they both kinda took the same path but I could help but think that Manchester Orchestra walked it better. They didn't lose their sound in the instruments compared to Man Man which I thought lost a lot of their bravado. Virgin is actually one of my favorite tracks haha. Oh well. Good stuff anyway, hit up Life Fantastic by Man Man!
Manchester has ALWAYS had a sludgier/heavier side on some of their songs, and that dates back to "like a virgin..." days. It's part of their sound. Simple Math is a refinement of the last record, mixing sludge/indie songs, and making the hooks catchier and the heavyness harsher. While I enjoy it (I'd give it far more than a 5, definitely), it's a bit dissapointing that they still don't know how (or don't want) to make a "solid" record.
Wow, completely disagree. This entire album is pure, unpredictable and just beautiful.

i think you should just review albums that are 8,9 to maybe 10 ratings. If not it'd still a waste of time..
