Shakespeare in love was overrated and not that popular. In Mexico never put that movie on theaters after they won some Oscars. Saving Private Ryan was shown on day 1 in Mexico and still shown on TV. That shows a great movie is released on day 1 and still showing on TV after many years.
Shakespeare in Love won because Harvey Weinstein is a FANTASTIC campaigner for Oscars. Shakespeare in Love is OK, but we all know Saving Private Ryan is the better movie -- but since when are the Oscars about the best movie? They never have been, and anyone who thinks that is wrong.
Does anyone even REMEMBER Shakespeare in Love? NO! Why? IT'S FORGETTABLE! This is WHY i hate the Oscars: They only choose the movies that are good for THAT year! That is why Raging Bull, 2001, Citizen Kane, The Great Dictator, A Clockwork Orange, Network, Sunset Boulevard, Dr. Strangelove and many others are not given the proper respect!
How can someone win best director, yet not have their movie win best picture? Shakespere's In Love is not awful like everyone says, but come on! The Oscars fd up. royally

"savin' private ryan", and "life is beautiful".. 2 films that teach us, what mankind is able to do to each other.. in my opinion: both deserve an oscar
Way to go,Steven! Another well-deserved Oscar for what is easily one of your best films. I love it when he wins Oscars, because,in my mind,he deserves every one that he has gotten. I hope he gets nominated next year, because I want to see him win as many more as he can. As Martin Scorsese said at the Globes in 2009,"Steven Spielberg and the art of cinema. One is unthinkable without the other.'
Now that I've watched this clip, I do think that Roberto Danini should have won for best director for Life Is Beautiful. It was a very good film. Don't get me wrong. I like Steven Spielberg. I think he's a genius director. But I do think that other new directors should be given full credit for making brilliant films. Maybe Roberto had won. Only for some other movie before he made Life Is Beautiful.
"The Thin Red Line" should have won. I hate Spielberg--he's just a big script thief (check out how he stole "Amistad"). "Saving Private Ryan" was a cheap melodrama. "Shakespeare In Love" was a stolen script. Weinstein is a bully and a thug. Hollywood is just a bunch of thieves, low-lifes, drunks, drug addicts, perverts, bums and desperate wannabes. Que hablar de este otro momento, la misma alegrìa y emociòn sentì, como cuando ganò el primer oscar. Para alguien que lo sigue esto vale mucho. Muy bien merecido. ¡Grande Spielberg!
2:07 what are the gesturing? Spielberg however had not made another one like it after Saving Private Ryan. i really like the concepts in Jaws and Jurassic Park
I seriously hope Peter Weir wins an Oscar one day. He's my favorite director. Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, Master and Commander, etc. So much talent. Six nominations, no wins yet. I honestly feel he should have won for M&C, but, alas, he was up against Peter Jackson in "The Year Lord of the Rings Must Win Everything but Best Short Film," lol.
I think steven spielberg more as a producer than a directore. and that is true he has like a 100 movies he has produced and not so much he has directed. THink about Christopher Nolan... Spielberg does 5 movies every year. Nolan does a movie every 2 years. Who takes his movies way more seriously. Isnt he chris nolan?? He wrote the story for inception for 10 years for example. Steven Spielberg does this these days just for money :(
@1Minute60Seconds You realize that they slap his name on tons of movies because of the prestige. Transformers is the perfect example of that philosophy. He is not really associated with those films. He only actively produces films he is invested in or directs. The Jurassic Park franchise and Indiana Jones are perfect examples of both.
Which part of Omaha beach scene in history today to teach us about the horrors of the D-Day landing were'nt allowed to watch all of it , but I've seen it before and it's amazing
@tranmere789 Seriously? I'm German and I'm not offended by his movies. The teachers here show you Schindler's list in fourth grade to teach you about the horrors of WWII. We don't have a problem with him.
shakespeare in love should NOT have won best picture...the oscars know they f'd up...12 years later, saving private ryan is still memorable and constantly shown on television (uncut) for its horrors of war..best WWII movie EVER made..
@justforlescomments Best Picture does not mean Best Director. That's why they are in separate categories. Best Picture = Best Directing + Acting + Writing + etc. SPR is a very epic film, but it doesn't have the most unique/original screenplay and the acting is not the most astonishing thing ever.

@zeromant80 right...sooo the fact that he directed the best film of the year had nothing to do with it either, huh? speilberg re-defined the war genre forever with one of his many masterpieces in saving private ryan..
Spielberg deserved that Oscar, but I was quite glad to see Roberto Benigni win Best Actor. And the Truman Show is an underrated soon-to-become classic. A fantastic script. I don't know why Jim Carrey wasn't nominated for Best Actor.

Seems when there's a Picture/Director split the one that got Director is usually better. I won't comment on Brokeback since I prefer Capote over both those movies but seems there's usually something more solid about the movie that gets Director. So in my heart, Private Ryan won. There was a REASON it easily deserved this one. I'm no longer offended when they're not brave enough to give something Picture after it gets Director....it gives it more strength!
@88mphsss Rotten Tomatoes actually predicted the King's Speech to win Picture while The Social Network to win for Director, but KS took both. Brokeback I think deserved Picture, but haven't seen Capote. It was the same case in 2000, when Gladiator won Best Picture, but Ridley Scott lost Director.

I love that Spielberg got to mention his mother when he won for Schindler's List and mention his father when he won for Saving Private Ryan. Truly blessed man indeed.
With regards to Saving Private Ryan, there were three World War II films nominated (Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and Life is Beautiful). I think the votes ended up canceling each other out.
I think it was a great year for film, including Shakespeare in Love. I mean, Shakespeare in Love still did win seven Oscars, two more than Saving Private Ryan. My theory as to why Saving Private Ryan didn't win? I think it hit too close to home during the time.
As far as robbery goes that year, how about The Truman show not getting nominated for Best Picture or Jim Carrey for Best Actor? I'd rather watch The Truman Show over Elizabeth.
@apologyisnothepolicy yeah that is so true. This movie doesn't glamorize anything about war it's really in your face just like Band of brothers which was undoubtedly the best mini series ever made along with the Pacific. This is what I like about Steven Spielberg. He doesn't fuck around
@apologyisnothepolicy if you can't see why saving private ryan didn't win best picture, then you dont know the academy at all lol. i want you to go look at how many oscars spielberg has right now, and then think about how many he would have if saving private ryan if he had won. and then think about the other special someone that the has 4 academy awards. then it will make absolute sense why the academy didn't want to give speilberg his fourth oscar. i think we all know who the special somene is.
He is the director who put all this stupid cheap lines and emoness in all the movies... and now people are following his stupid shit.. wut else can he do without big fucking budget..
When I hear Hymn to the Fallen, I really do picture myself walking through a veterans cemetery picturing their ghosts walking behind me. Awesome theme and a totally deserved award!
Mainly because sci-fi films are not released in the 'oscar' months. Inception for example, released in June (i think) 2010; dominated the box office for the remain of 2010; most original piece of screenwriting since Memento; best film in 2010; but because it was released in June and it is a Sci-fi, it didn't win the big ones.
The Last Days of the Big Lie is a documentary which debunks the disgusting liars glorified as victims and heroes in the Steven Spielberg produced, Academy Award winning fictional Holocaust “documentary” The Last Days.
I'm not a ''believer'' or anything but man, how can a SINGLE MAN make SO MANY amazing creations in just a few decades. I dont get it. He's the greatest, no doubt.
I don't know the story behind it but it is pretty sad that he pointed out only two of his kids being at the oscars when actually three of his kids were there; the third being Jessica from his previous marriage. If I were jessica, I would've been heart broken when he only pointed out the two initially.
@cb9603 dude how creative are you for bringing 'exploiting ww2' in context with Steven Spielberg making this movie. We're all alowed to have opinions, but there always are a couple of people who bring things totally out of context, damn.

88mphsss 9 months ago
@88mphsss Rotten Tomatoes actually predicted the King's Speech to win Picture while The Social Network to win for Director, but KS took both. Brokeback I think deserved Picture, but haven't seen Capote. It was the same case in 2000, when Gladiator won Best Picture, but Ridley Scott lost Director.

I love that Spielberg got to mention his mother when he won for Schindler's List and mention his father when he won for Saving Private Ryan. Truly blessed man indeed.

It makes me so sad watching this, because I know that SPR didn't end up winning Best Picture...
SilverAxe13 9 months ago

'98 was the robbery of the century. Shakespeare in Love was a good film, by SPR was and is a absolute classic.

People keep buying their copies of Saving Private Ryan and fathers show the film to their sons to teach them about the horrors of WWII.
Shakespeare In Love....................................................sorry, I forgot about that last one, anyone remembers?

@apologyisnothepolicy yeah that is so true. This movie doesn't glamorize anything about war it's really in your face just like Band of brothers which was undoubtedly the best mini series ever made along with the Pacific. This is what I like about Steven Spielberg. He doesn't fuck around
MrBrisbaneman1994 9 months ago
@apologyisnothepolicy Didn't even bother watching it. Saving Private Ryan forever.
ThisisfromUzi 9 months ago
@apologyisnothepolicy if you can't see why saving private ryan didn't win best picture, then you dont know the academy at all lol. i want you to go look at how many oscars spielberg has right now, and then think about how many he would have if saving private ryan if he had won. and then think about the other special someone that the has 4 academy awards. then it will make absolute sense why the academy didn't want to give speilberg his fourth oscar. i think we all know who the special somene is.

@PlanetMan77 Science fiction movies don't win Best Director or Best Picture categories.
adriantheloser 10 months ago
@adriantheloser

I like Steve but Saving Private ryan is the most overrated and exploitative movie that I have ever seen.
LeeHoxton1 1 year ago
I don't know the story behind it but it is pretty sad that he pointed out only two of his kids being at the oscars when actually three of his kids were there; the third being Jessica from his previous marriage. If I were jessica, I would've been heart broken when he only pointed out the two initially.

@cb9603 dude how creative are you for bringing 'exploiting ww2' in context with Steven Spielberg making this movie. We're all alowed to have opinions, but there always are a couple of people who bring things totally out of context, damn.
