Thanks for sorting - I am writing a talk on Harry Warren at the moment so have been doing a lot of research on him - Carmen was wonderful and thanks for posting.
Your work on HW sounds a lot interesting. I'm sure you'll do a great job considering your close look and concern on what is and isn't by him to be known. I take the opportunity to invite you to drop by at Carmen's website I've created entirely in tribute to her at carmen dot miranda dot nom dot br. I think you'll enjoy it. Best wishes from Brazil.
I agree it can be corny to today's eyes. People are in general a lot tougher about feelings regarding someone else's nowadays than at that time - nearly 70 years ago. Anyway, "I still cook with gas"... :) Thanks for the post.
I really don't understand the reason of your question. Or, you might not know that Carmen Miranda was accompanied by the members of the Banda do Lua themselves in all of her American movies. Not always the same members, but them anyway. They were also invited to appear in other American movies to honor Latin American countries without Carmen, though.
You're welcome. Look for this video "Nestor Amaral and Doris Day - "It's Magic" - 1948" here on YouTube and you'll see two of Carmen's band guys in this movie with Doris Day. The same guys also appeared in "To Have and Have Not" with Humphrey Bogart in 1944. I agree with you - really awsome. Did you know that the only member of the Bando da Lua still alive is 83 years old and lives in Mexico? He's the blond one and you can see him play in the video "Carmen Miranda on the Milton Berle Show".
WOW did you guys notice she is wearing PLATFORM SHOES? WOW I did not know they were around in the 1940's WOW, I love them, she reminds me of a DRAG QUEEN, very simliar, BUT I LOVE HER, SHE IS VERY CUTE!
Have you seen the picture of Carmen dancing with Cesar Romero? It was intended to be an official studio publicity photo, and in it, Cesar is lifting her as they're turning past the camera. Except...you can see up her skirt. And she's not wearing any underwear.
In this scene, she's got on a similar type of skirt, but it's got a high cut in it - so high that you can see that in THIS case, she definitely has on an undergarment! And it matches the black sequins of part of her top.
Carmen would not wear any underwear not to let it mark up the on-body tight outfits. Many would make a great deal of that. Especially gossip journalists. She had to "dance to the music according to its rhythm", if you understand what that means. She was inside a huge mind grinding machine called Hollywood.
carmen was a very beautifull woman she had many lovers but they all loved her her looks feisty temper and sexyness got to most men in hollywood.she was greatly missed by all wen she left us.a real pioneer in her time.
A true pioneer for latinas and for introducing arrogant insular american whites to some semblance of latin culture at a time when they didn't know a mexican, from a cuban, from a brazilian, from a puerto rican!!
Newsflash she was born in portugal, she lived most of her life in brazil yes, but She is just as white as any old american, though less was know about the cultures back then, and she certainly could sing, and who doesnot love the giant hats she wore it is her trademark.
Visitors to Rio de Janeiro can find a museum dedicated to Carmen Miranda in the Flamengo neighborhood on Avenida Rui Barbosa. The museum includes several original costumes, and shows clips from her filmography. There is also a museum dedicated to her in Marco de Canaveses, Portugal called "Museu Municipal Carmen Miranda", with various photos and one of the famous hats. Outside the museum there is a statue of Carmen Miranda.
Brazilian author Ruy Castro wrote a monumental biography of Carmen Miranda entitled Carmen After Four Years of Interviews, published in 2005 in Brazil. This book has yet to appear in English.
You're right! Editors & publishers should give it a serious thought and provide the book in English as well. I've read it in Portuguese. Simply great and very well detailed. Carmen's life & career were really amazing. A shame she left her fans so soon. Her memory & work are eternal though.
Carmen would be delighted to hear that. She was a real nationalist and succeeded in singing in her movies songs in Portuguese which no one else would understand in America. She broke many taboos down. Thanks.
she is dancing her behind off in those super high platform shoes! lol and this was done live! imagine how many entertainers today would trip, stumble, and fall on their behind trying to do what carmen is doing LOL Major talent she is :-)
And the platform shoes were an invention of hers back in the late 1930s before coming to the US that she never thought of patenting. Many simply copied them. She wouldn't mind. Even at home she used to be wearing them. Such a woman!
Super inteligente!!! Ela cantava em inglês, mas a música é um samba bem brasileiro!!!! Intelligent girl! She sang in English, but her songs were true brazilian samba!!!!!!!
In July of 1943, Carmen decided to have a (unnecessary) plastic surgery on her nose. The operation took 5 hours. Four days after doctors found a terrible infection on her liver caused by the operation. For weeks she stayed in hospital between life and death where she lost 10 pounds.
To satisfy a bunch of contract accomplishments, she had to take pills to stay up and pills to get to sleep. That went on for years. Her heart didn't understand that working kept her alive, it wouldn't let her cross her own limit, and then gave her a stroke at her 46. The early end of a joy factory. The amusing fruits remain thanks to her photos, records and movies.
The official cause of death given on her death certificate was untreated toxemia and heart failure. Her body was flown back to Brazil soon afterwards and the Brazilian government declared a period of national mourning.
Not exactly. Carmen's father moved to Brazil alone, before the family. Carmen was then taken to Brazil when she was only 9 months old. Check out more on Carmen at her website: carmen dot miranda dot com dot br. Thanks.
loool we can tell that she is not brasilian otherwise she could not speak with accent like that... she is portuguese born in the north of protugal...very cool
