You made this more difficult than it needs to be. Just record one part, and when you're done, hit the record button and record onto the new track that appears. Be sure to have it set up so that the first track plays while you're recording.

If you record one track and want to do the other one later, just save the project...open it later and hit the record button and record the second track. So much easier, really.

As far as I know, Garageband is only for Mac, it comes with the iLife package standard with any new Mac. I don´t know about a similar program for PC, but I´m sure there is one. Use google, or just get yourself a Mac and be carefree...;)
