@Emil4ik - Michel LeGrand is amazing- I just love listening to this entire CD- one of my favorites- and so worth owning. I have a few others up from the CD- . Really such a fantastic combination of gifted talent! Enjoy:)
I am only 28 but my Father is a huge fan, I can remember when I was about 4 or 5 years old, he would listen on a Sunday to songs like When a Child is Born, Betcha By Golly Wow, I'm Stone in Love With You and If..He had a double LP dont know what happened to it, with his songs and plenty of cover songs by different artists on...I have looked online and have seen all the album covers except the one my Dad had, it was brown and Johnny is wistfully looking at a china figurine in his hand.
@DaveyC95 Hi- so glad to hear from you- people of all ages appreciate Johnny's voice. I know exactly the cover you are talking about . While I don't own it- I can tell you the name of it- It was called The Johnny Mathis Collection. I just checked as I had a photo of the LP cover. Hope that helps. Those are all wonderful songs.Enjoy:)
@lenoremewton I found it online, what a good memory I have, it looks exactly as I remembered as a child..It came out in 1977, and they must have reissued it several times because when I was a toddler in 1984/1985 I was told that I used the records as a frisbee, and several records were replaced lol..That's kids for you hehe..Trouble is they never issued it on CD, so you will never be able to get that collection of songs together again, and nobody has a turntable these days. :-)
Johnny is always vocally and spiritually refreshing,he fills the emptiness and translates the secret messages of my heart so that even I can make sense of their meanings.Sounds foolish ,maybe, but it is the only way I know to express it.Thank you and I can sleep more peacefully now.'nite lenoremewton.
@serpentinecreature - you're welcome- i love this interpretation- it is purely Johnny's. (thank you for the note on the other channel with the live version)- I loved making this one- AND- i adore the live one- as I said- i watch it nearly nightly. Yes- we can all sleep well after that:)
@rlee1976 - Truly- as said earlier- a marriage of gifts- so finely interwoven-. To me, Johnny takes himself- and us- 'inside' the song- then brings that expression outward - with delicate finesse- all seamless, and as you say, stunning. Glad you are enjoying it.
Soooooo, how does one write of perfection? OK I will then; it's name is Johnny Mathis singing/performing/moving/walking/talking/breathing/being. He released this album mere days before I met him first time so it will always be very extra special to me.
@jfktwo - glad you like it- quite hard not to- every song is stellar. I love the tempo- Johnny really sings these just as poetry- the way the Bergman's wrote them - and the music and arrangements so perfectly constructed by Legrand.
I've wondered myself how we keep the music playing. How blessed we are in this world to have such diversity in our artists. Artists who bring us so much happiness, sorro and humility.
@atomatoface - You're very welcome! I don't know if you read the notes here- but the Bergman's noted in the liner notes of how beautifully and lovingly shared Johnny's expression of this song and all the others on this wonderful CD- a real 'marriage of talent- Johnny Mathis, Michel Legrande, and Marilyn and Alan Bergman. You will LOVE the CD- it's magical. Thank you for your nice comment!
@CarlaMills - Johnny handsome essence just continues to grow. You can find more about his tour dates and updated information on this johnnymathis website. He tours consistently each month to sell out crowds. He has- not to sound too corny- certainly kept his 'music playing' to the delight of all~
@lhasa13 - Thanks very much, Joan. The more I listen to this particular recording of this song, I love it all the more. I'm glad you're enjoying it- it makes it all worthwhile.:) Enjoy.
@ziekeppler - Thanks so much for your lovely comment . I appreciate it. Please enjoy the videos. Very glad to hear that it touched you. Enjoy! (and , thank you so much, Gerry:)
Beautiful choice Lenore, and the Bergman's poetry never fails to touch particularly when it has such a vehicle in Johnny's voice to carry it. As for stripping away the orchestra, sometimes less really is more.
this is one of my favourite albums. as you say a marriage of gifts. johnny's voice has the pathos and emotion these songs need. if you want a contrast listen to the sarah vaughan / legrand album. thank you so much for posting this.
@johneunson - You're very welcome. So beautifully put. I will check out the Sarah Vaughn version- she was a consummate singer as well- her own unique quality. Thanks for visiting- so glad you like it.
incredible! look at the arrangement!

What a gifted, gifted man. Mathis is truly one-of-a-kind. Not one comparable before him, or ever will be again. His voice is precision.

@janeusa22 - so true, Jane. This song is just one prime example- such expression and delivery of emotion. Enjoy.

The piano arrangement Legrand came up with for his own masterpiece here is just stunning... as stunningly gorgeous as Mathis is himself...
What a superb communicator of emotion...
