GREAT INTRODUCTIONAL VID! This kind of vid is exactly what I'm looking for. I have so many gaps in my knowledge that I don't know where to go to make up for it. I wish more videos were presented as well as yours. Maybe youtube should have separate novice vid section and an actual professorial vid section with less "um's" and "likes" and long pauses(poeple with proven experience/knowledge base and/or a very long track record of being on youtube) in their vids.
good video. Does a standard a2 style ar15 cost as much as a carbine model, or would it cost more? I dont really need any tactical accessories for it, i just want the gun to look like an M16A2 OR M16A4
Ha, 100 trillion dollar Zimbabwean bills, I got a few of those from a friend who lives there. Apparently they've actually switched over to using the dollar now since over-inflation made it so impractical to use their own currency. When I went there in 2008 we had to bring a suitcase full of cash to pay for dinner one night. Good video also.
i'm thinking about getting a Wilson Combat UT-15.... what is your opinion on those.. on another note.. money is not an issue. Sorry if someone has asked this already, but I just don't want to go back thru comments searching.
@Ca11MeKARMA no if you have a 14.5 in you must fix a muzzle break or comp to the end to make it 16in, if your barrel is already 16 in without a brake its fine.
That was good! I do not have an AR ...yet. Still interested in the Mini-14 mostly and think that would be just as fun, cheaper, and serve my purpose around the home. Until then I guess I'll depend on the shotgun and pistols to defend myself. Should we ever find ourselves in a completely lawless country, state or local gov't, then I'll be able to survive without an AR.
Make your own. Almost everyone can afford one if you build it 1 major piece every few weeks, and youll quickly learn a lot more about the gun this way.
@DaytonaRoadster not at all if you really check out how dd works you would understand everything in house extreme quality control you find even the tinniest blemish they will replace it no cost for shipping 100% mil spec extreme torture testing they are really light has some of the best rails available lmt and lwrc overprice and you pay alot for piston the isn't better its just different and excels in different areas and lacks in others.
@908LuX973 thats a horrible idea you really don't want shitty stag anything if you gunna through down on a upper around 1200 dollars than get a lower that at least attempts to match the quality bcm has lowers a\with cosmetic blemishes that are mil spec and i am sure would compliment the upper far better other wise your insulting your upper
@deej1478 stag IS milspec, and i havent heard anything bad about them. besides, Bravo Company doesnt ship their lowers to NJ. but im still looking while i get the money up but so far thats what it is
@deej1478 and i was looking at larue too but they only have stripped lowers, so i gotta put the thing together myself and it seems like a pain in the ass.
@908LuX973 well i understand that then just such a nice upper thought it could use a work of art on the bottom but state restrictions can be a deal breaker but good luck itle be a amazing setup i bet
Spike's Tactical, Colt and Bravo Company all make better products for around the same price as Bushmaster or for a little more you can get an LWRC which is the best AR I have owned. Also I've heard good things about M&Ps but I've never shot one and therefore couldn't recommend one. Your mileage may vary but I'll never buy a bushy with and put shit optics on it for $1500 when for less than 3k you can have a scar with an acog.
I know your a millionaire and have a 2 foot penis and are ex special forces and have a hot girlfriend just like everyone else on the internet. So I should bow to your infinite knowledge about guns. But my bushy came with an improperly tuned gas system that caused so much carrier tilt that the buffer tube had metal shavings taken out of it. Then when I sent it back they made me pay to ship their broken gun back to them and they only quasi made the problem better.
I love how I warn everyone about my bad experience with Bushmaster, and budget gun shit in general and this dude acts like I came to his house and shit on his gun in front of him. I had a bushy and it ran like crap and when I sent it back to them they said they fixed it and it still ran poorly, I'll never buy another.
@88warwolf not sure how you would figure that from my page with no videos on it...only reason I made it was so my wife could post videos of our kids while I was deployed and we took those down when I got back. Bushmaster is a garbage company, the only people who say they are good are people who bought one and feel stupid they spent money on junk and so they try to defend it. Save and spend a little extra and get a quality gun from a good company, you'll never regret it. Same thing with optics, pay more and get quality always better to buy once and cry once.
@88warwolf You don't actually mean self defense, because you only need the gun to fire to be used for self defense, what you really meant was the a stock cheap DPMS is not meant to be carried into Combat operations. I can use a stick for self defense.
Great video for newbies. I love how you sound professional and knowledgable without sounding like an arrogant range ninja. Thumbs up!! P.S. POF-USA P415.... I do not see myself ever buying another brand. unprecedented accuracy and sewing machine smooth. Worth the extra couple hundred.
@ vuurwapenblog, I just found out that stag arms is also allowed in my state, so between the bushmaster,M&p, and stag arms which one would you go for if you had to? thankx
@VuurwapenBlog, How reliable is the bushmaster? in my state we are very limited as far as choices go regarding AR 15.Thank you I really enjoyed your video, its very informative and happy new year
I picked up the 6920 and so far I am happy with it. I am now looking for optics like the eotech holographic sight and a magnifier. There are places to buy them on the web, but I would rather bring it in to a store and have a gunsmith install rails and the whole optics system.
@BoysBigToyz Putting an EOTech and magnifier on the rail will take about 10 seconds - no gunsmithing involved. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating on the time, but it's dead simple. As for the rail, consider a drop-in rail that you can install by just removing the handguards and replacing them with a rail - if you really need/want a rail.
@VuurwapenBlog Right now I don't need the rails but I am not happy with the grouping. At 25 yards it was all over the target which was about the size of a computer screen. I want the grouping to be closer to an egg.
@BoysBigToyz What ammo, and is this a problem with only this rifle? That is, do you have another rifle (any rifle) you can shoot to compare? Were you shooting from a supported position?
@VuurwapenBlog I'm using Rem 223 55 GR. I used my XBolt from the same distance and hit a tennis ball. I don't have sandbags yet so I rested my arms on the table. I am reading up on the Windage and Elevation adjustments. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks - Willie
DPMS is Mil Spec, same mil spec as the rest of them. Mil Spec is Mil Spec is Mil Spec. If your trying to buy the cheapest AR then you will have problems. Amazingly enough i have had lots of problems with my Colt, but never had one problem with my DPMS, i shoot the Panther more than any other rifle in my inventory. Are there higher Quality AR's? Sure are, but the DPMS meets all the Military minimum specs.
@thewonderfrog DPMS is not mil spec. There is nothing mil spec about DPMS. Mil spec and DPMS should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Are you getting the picture yet?
@VuurwapenBlog Granted the majority of retail sold DPMS rifles aren't mil Spec, but you can get a DPMS built rifle that meets all Military Specs. BTW having military specs does not necessarily mean it is better, just that it meets what the military wants. DPMS did not become the second largest Manufacturer of AR-15's by making Junk. You don't need 100% Mil Spec AR unless you actually are participating in Combat, not many people posting here who are in combat operations.
@thewonderfrog If someone told you that the DPMS Panther was "mil-spec" before they sold it to you, then I would ask for a refund. You've been hoodwinked. It pays to do some research before going out and buying a gun.
Man, I've watched this video probably three times now... it gets better each time... I hear something new each time I watch it... Thanks for the straightforward approach and for all of the information.
Hi - I started doing initial research on Ar-15's. A salesman at a gun store showed me a DPMS Panther for $615 and said it had the same Mil Spec than the more expensive Ar's. I am a "brand name" person so that is where I am having second thoughts. I am kinda looking at an S&W or a Colt. Your thoughts? Thanks -
@BoysBigToyz I'm not an expert, but from my experience my DPMS had a poor finish. I'd go for a Bravo Company or Bushmaster. Colt is a good brand and so is S&W.
@VuurwapenBlog There is nothing wrong with DPMS. They are definitely not your S&W or your Colt, but don't get scared because they are not HI POINT! DPMS has great customer service and great guns for target practice. If you are going to be doing competition shooting, just like VuurwapenBlog said, I would pass on. However, I am an avid gun collector and bought the DPMS oracle, swapped a few parts out with Magpul and trust me this gun works great. They are up and coming so prices will soon go up
* IT bothers me that the whole gun industry calls M16 platorm rifles the 'ar15' Its wrong to call all M16 and M4 type platforms by the name ar15. do some research please.
"The AR-15 was first built by ArmaLite. They sold the AR-15 design to Colt. The select-fire AR-15 entered the US military...as the M16 rifle. Colt then marketed the AR-15 as a SEMI-AUTOMATIC version of the M16 rifle for CIVILIAN sales..The name 'AR-15' is a Colt registered trademark, which refers only to the SEMI-AUTOMATIC rifle."
Vuurwapen is taking his time to make great videos for us to watch; if he didn't know what he was talking about then he wouldn't do it.
@nicknuke7 Nick. You are incorrect but don't be down on yourself. I served in the US Army and at the time I was issued a Colt Model AR-15 <-This was stamped into the lower. The rifle had a fire select switch with had safe-semi-auto. IT IS A MYTH THAT AR-15 MEANS SEMI AUTO.
@Premiumdogg Well I can't be incorrect, since it isn't my source of information, hence the quotations around the paragraph. You gave the advice of doing research, and I took your advice and did my research, and this is what I came up with. I listed the history of where the term AR-15 came from, b/c that was its original name. Now you're stating that your rifle had AR-15 on it, Then why does it bother you when someone calls a M16 platform an AR15 as you have stated in your first post?
@Premiumdogg "The M16 is the United States military designation for the AR-15 rifle adapted for both semi-automatic and full-automatic fire. Colt purchased the rights to the AR-15 from ArmaLite, and CURRENTLY uses that designation only for semi-automatic versions of the rifle. " keyword: "Currently".
@Premiumdogg M16/M4 is Military name. The M16 is a shoulder fired gas operated air cooled magazine fed rifle that fires a 5.56mm and is capable of semi-automatic and 3 round burst function. That description seperates the M16 and AR15 in availability to be sold to civilians in the stores like a regular AR15 without a mountain of paper work. If i read your post correctly this should calm your pet peave.
@Dogsoldier22 You are incorrect but don't be down on yourself. I served in the US Army and at the time I was issued a Colt Model AR-15 <-This was stamped into the lower. The rifle had a fire select switch with had safe-semi-auto. IT IS A MYTH THAT AR-15 MEANS SEMI AUTO.
@Premiumdogg Should we stop calling all books, books? Hardcovers and paperbacks shouldn't just be labeled books.. The whole reading industry refers to as such.. Its like read a fucking book. wait. wut?
My critique adds that you did not discuss the reasons for choosing one configuration over another, just the operating system's pros and cons. Is the prospective buyer looking for a rifle primarily for defense, big game or varmint hunting, or passive/active shooting sports? 2 cents given.
Although a new owner, I may do a video on my version of the AR, always interesting to see different ideas. As im on a budget, I was really drawn to the Magpul MOE handgrips and stocks, I know its everywhwere but its some of the best quality value stuff out there for detailing to your liking. One thing about AR's, no two exactly alike. Im going to start a new build using a Yankee Hill Machine lower receiver and save for a nice trigger, bolt carrier etc. - wont be fast but nice quality w/done.
Excellent presentation - I watched many videos before choosing my AR & yours was one of the most thorough and infromative. Im a very mech. capable person and was set on building mine as it looks very easy long as you follow the rules use good well matched parts and do the important checks such as safety, head space etc - but in the end I bought a stripped DPMS flat top and added Magpul Troy and Hogue accessories and im very pleased with the result. My second one will be built, cant wait.
i wasn`t aware of the 11% federal excise tax on complete weapons!i was looking on stag arms wbsite and was wondering way i could buy a 6.8 upper and a lower seperately for less than a complete rifle.the only difference was the complete rifle had two mags with it!
@DR1826 Very true, yet many of the people that would watch such video may not be quite familiar with firearms terminology as of yet, so this could be considered a simplification for the novice... :)
@DR1826 Another person crying over semantics like this is the military. This video is directed to the average consumer who may not know what the difference is.
It's like chastising someone for saying clip instead of magazine. Yes you're right but what's the point?
@semiautoriflelover1 ...and your old profile was banned for disturbing, obsessive behavior, just like this one will be, and any other profiles you create for the purposes of trolling.
@VuurwapenBlog i have a colt pre ban H Bar 20" upper and i was wondering what rails would fit? because they have the mid length carbine and rifle like you said but id hate to buy one that wouldnt fit. what you would reccomend.
Great video. Another pretty critical decision to make is "flat top vs. carry handle," and also whether or not you want a "mil-spec" gun. Mil-spec isn't always better, and certainly not something to obsess over, as Colt, LMT, and FN are (to my knowledge) the only ARs currently being used by the military, but some of the processes outlined in the TDP are objectively "better" than those used by certain private companies, or you can, for all intents and purposes, buy a rifle that is made to the same
@wcropp1 standard as a "real" military AR, or save some money and buy a cheaper rifle and upgrade a few components, which is sometimes still cheaper to do. These days, though, you can usually get a rifle made to "mil-spec" standards without shelling out the money for a Colt or swapping out parts on a "non-mil-spec" gun. If I could do it all over again, I'd buy an AR with a mid-length gas system instead of a carbine, a thinner barrel, and a 1:7 twist rate barrel instead of a 1:9. I also had to
@wcropp1 have to have the gas key properly staked, upgrade the extractor spring, buy a heavier buffer, and I keep a little higher quality replacement bolt on hand. These were all fairly affordable/simple upgrades, though I'm still stuck with the gas system length and the barrel twist rate. The 1:9 is fine for most shooting, and is actually better for .22 conversions (supposedly), but I would still like a 1:7 so I can shoot the heavy bullets (which my 1:9 may actually do, but it's no guarantee).
@wcropp1 The mid-length gas system is just a little more reliable/softer shooting. Had I known what I know now, I probably would have purchased a different rifle, but I can't complain as I purchased the gun in 2005 for ~$700 back before middies and pencil barrels were popular. Even a few years ago your options were basically "Colt or everything else," with a little bit of quality variation within the "everything else" category. Now you can get a "mil-spec" gun that isn't limited to what Colt
@wcropp1 offers, and usually not so expensive. That's the great thing about ARs--there's one for everybody. I'm already planning to purchase my current carbine's replacement, a long range precision AR, and possibly an AR-10. It's like some kind of damn kids toy where you have to "collect them all." Thanks for the video--this would have been a big help to me when I purchased my first AR. Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way ;-). An AK or battle rifle series like this would be great.
LMT procures Mk. 18 uppers in a very limited contract with the US Navy. They do have M203 deals with the branches, though.
Only Colt and FNM have ever had DoD and Branch contracts for M4's and M16's. It is likely that LMT and Daniel Defense have gotten a piece of the TDP through their component and attachment procurement deals.
@VuurwapenBlog Why do you have a ump 45 on top of all those ar's at 0:04?

@JWnFL You could do a follow up on the .308 SCAR.. maybe an in depth or the 556 works too! Thanks!

I picked up the 6920 and so far I am happy with it. I am now looking for optics like the eotech holographic sight and a magnifier. There are places to buy them on the web, but I would rather bring it in to a store and have a gunsmith install rails and the whole optics system.
BoysBigToyz 2 months ago
@BoysBigToyz Putting an EOTech and magnifier on the rail will take about 10 seconds - no gunsmithing involved. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating on the time, but it's dead simple. As for the rail, consider a drop-in rail that you can install by just removing the handguards and replacing them with a rail - if you really need/want a rail.
VuurwapenBlog 2 months ago
@VuurwapenBlog Right now I don't need the rails but I am not happy with the grouping. At 25 yards it was all over the target which was about the size of a computer screen. I want the grouping to be closer to an egg.

@BoysBigToyz What ammo, and is this a problem with only this rifle? That is, do you have another rifle (any rifle) you can shoot to compare? Were you shooting from a supported position?
VuurwapenBlog 2 months ago

Sure are, but the DPMS meets all the Military minimum specs.
thewonderfrog 2 months ago
@thewonderfrog DPMS is not mil spec. There is nothing mil spec about DPMS. Mil spec and DPMS should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Are you getting the picture yet?
VuurwapenBlog 2 months ago
@VuurwapenBlog Granted the majority of retail sold DPMS rifles aren't mil Spec, but you can get a DPMS built rifle that meets all Military Specs. BTW having military specs does not necessarily mean it is better, just that it meets what the military wants. DPMS did not become the second largest Manufacturer of AR-15's by making Junk. You don't need 100% Mil Spec AR unless you actually are participating in Combat, not many people posting here who are in combat operations.
thewonderfrog 2 months ago
@thewonderfrog If someone told you that the DPMS Panther was "mil-spec" before they sold it to you, then I would ask for a refund. You've been hoodwinked. It pays to do some research before going out and buying a gun.

if i get a 5.56 AR, and a couple years later, get a 6.8spc do i need to get a new lower? will the mag fit in the magazine well?
theswimer419 2 months ago
my best preference would be an AR in .243 ( Remington R-25 ) but with tactical components. 30 round mag, flash-hider, bayonet lug (very optional).

So what is the difference between a monolithic rail system and a floating rail system and does it make a difference? Thanks
BoysBigToyz 2 months ago
Hi - I started doing initial research on Ar-15's. A salesman at a gun store showed me a DPMS Panther for $615 and said it had the same Mil Spec than the more expensive Ar's. I am a "brand name" person so that is where I am having second thoughts. I am kinda looking at an S&W or a Colt. Your thoughts? Thanks -
BoysBigToyz 3 months ago
@BoysBigToyz I'm not an expert, but from my experience my DPMS had a poor finish. I'd go for a Bravo Company or Bushmaster. Colt is a good brand and so is S&W.
DropC09 3 months ago
@BoysBigToyz Pass on DPMS and any salesman who says they are "mil-spec." S&W is quite decent and a Colt is a great rifle and a bargain right now.

@VuurwapenBlog I am able to get a Colt LE 6940 with a 16" barrel for $1299 - your thoughts - appreciated. Feel free so send a PM.
BoysBigToyz 2 months ago
@BoysBigToyz Pretty decent price, but I'd skip the 6940 and pick up a 6920 for $1000-1100.

Premiumdogg 3 months ago
@Premiumdogg Do YOUR research:
Vuurwapen is taking his time to make great videos for us to watch; if he didn't know what he was talking about then he wouldn't do it.
nicknuke7 3 months ago
@nicknuke7 Nick. You are incorrect but don't be down on yourself. I served in the US Army and at the time I was issued a Colt Model AR-15 <-This was stamped into the lower. The rifle had a fire select switch with had safe-semi-auto. IT IS A MYTH THAT AR-15 MEANS SEMI AUTO.
Premiumdogg 2 months ago
@Premiumdogg Well I can't be incorrect, since it isn't my source of information, hence the quotations around the paragraph. You gave the advice of doing research, and I took your advice and did my research, and this is what I came up with. I listed the history of where the term AR-15 came from, b/c that was its original name. Now you're stating that your rifle had AR-15 on it, Then why does it bother you when someone calls a M16 platform an AR15 as you have stated in your first post?
nicknuke7 2 months ago
@Premiumdogg "The M16 is the United States military designation for the AR-15 rifle adapted for both semi-automatic and full-automatic fire. Colt purchased the rights to the AR-15 from ArmaLite, and CURRENTLY uses that designation only for semi-automatic versions of the rifle. " keyword: "Currently".
nicknuke7 2 months ago
@Premiumdogg M16/M4 is Military name. The M16 is a shoulder fired gas operated air cooled magazine fed rifle that fires a 5.56mm and is capable of semi-automatic and 3 round burst function. That description seperates the M16 and AR15 in availability to be sold to civilians in the stores like a regular AR15 without a mountain of paper work. If i read your post correctly this should calm your pet peave.

- wont be fast but nice quality w/done.
yambo59 3 months ago
Excellent presentation - I watched many videos before choosing my AR & yours was one of the most thorough and infromative. Im a very mech. capable person and was set on building mine as it looks very easy long as you follow the rules use good well matched parts and do the important checks such as safety, head space etc - but in the end I bought a stripped DPMS flat top and added Magpul Troy and Hogue accessories and im very pleased with the result. My second one will be built, cant wait.

i wasn`t aware of the 11% federal excise tax on complete weapons!i was looking on stag arms wbsite and was wondering way i could buy a 6.8 upper and a lower seperately for less than a complete rifle.the only difference was the complete rifle had two mags with it!
bobsolla 5 months ago
Another person misusing the term "caliber". CHAMBERING is the correct term. Caliber refers to the bore diameter, not the cartridge.

@DR1826 Very true, yet many of the people that would watch such video may not be quite familiar with firearms terminology as of yet, so this could be considered a simplification for the novice... :)

Great video. Another pretty critical decision to make is "flat top vs. carry handle," and also whether or not you want a "mil-spec" gun. Mil-spec isn't always better, and certainly not something to obsess over, as Colt, LMT, and FN are (to my knowledge) the only ARs currently being used by the military, but some of the processes outlined in the TDP are objectively "better" than those used by certain private companies, or you can, for all intents and purposes, buy a rifle that is made to the same
wcropp1 5 months ago
@wcropp1 standard as a "real" military AR, or save some money and buy a cheaper rifle and upgrade a few components, which is sometimes still cheaper to do. These days, though, you can usually get a rifle made to "mil-spec" standards without shelling out the money for a Colt or swapping out parts on a "non-mil-spec" gun. If I could do it all over again, I'd buy an AR with a mid-length gas system instead of a carbine, a thinner barrel, and a 1:7 twist rate barrel instead of a 1:9. I also had to
wcropp1 5 months ago
@wcropp1 have to have the gas key properly staked, upgrade the extractor spring, buy a heavier buffer, and I keep a little higher quality replacement bolt on hand. These were all fairly affordable/simple upgrades, though I'm still stuck with the gas system length and the barrel twist rate. The 1:9 is fine for most shooting, and is actually better for .22 conversions (supposedly), but I would still like a 1:7 so I can shoot the heavy bullets (which my 1:9 may actually do, but it's no guarantee).
wcropp1 5 months ago
@wcropp1 The mid-length gas system is just a little more reliable/softer shooting. Had I known what I know now, I probably would have purchased a different rifle, but I can't complain as I purchased the gun in 2005 for ~$700 back before middies and pencil barrels were popular. Even a few years ago your options were basically "Colt or everything else," with a little bit of quality variation within the "everything else" category. Now you can get a "mil-spec" gun that isn't limited to what Colt
wcropp1 5 months ago
@wcropp1 offers, and usually not so expensive. That's the great thing about ARs--there's one for everybody. I'm already planning to purchase my current carbine's replacement, a long range precision AR, and possibly an AR-10. It's like some kind of damn kids toy where you have to "collect them all." Thanks for the video--this would have been a big help to me when I purchased my first AR. Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way ;-). An AK or battle rifle series like this would be great.
wcropp1 5 months ago
@wcropp1
