i notice that plenty of of objectivists don't take the trouble you do in in justifying themselves. most of them are satisfied with "existence exists" or "free will" without getting into it.
Trait or property is the adjective form of a particular will or purpose. It is just one facet of that manifestation. In noun forms they are forces of nature, gods, angels, intelligences, etc. Much like elements in physicality, they are seldom found in isolated, pure forms. The verb form, enactment or embodiment, becomes convoluted as well.
What you're calling a "trait" is most commonly referred to as a "property" in metaphysics.
Just as A is A, we know what A is by recognizing everything which A is not. Logic only works when we separate that which "is" from that which "is not".
It can seem tricky because everything is everything, so all conceptual dividers are simply that- conceptual. We have no hard dividers, because in reality, there are no dividers.
What I'm starting to think about theses days is that people say something is circular therefore wrong or invalid. But it makes it only circular. I really don't see a problem with trait if it clear what it is compared too.
unfortunately i think metaphysics may be an endless rathole to nowhere. no matter what explanation the human mind could possibly contrive, regardless of whatever model could be conceived, the question "what is reality" will persist. i think the observed differences we attempt to categorize are really just dynamic asymmetries among the flow of the same connected reality.
like you say, we exist in "middle land." energy flows in all directions from the inner most to the outer most, we are what emerges at this level. i think to penetrate to the "deepest" level of reality would mean that experience would have to be abandoned altogether since experience is itself an emergent thing, a set of vibrations, of asymmetries. i dont believe a human brain is capable of doing anything but abandoning all of these metaphysical traps.
I'd recommend to give it up. I can verify the accuracy of my cognitive faculties not otherwise than always by the very means of my cognitive faculties. If any world (or the Universe) as such, or even such thing like "things in the Universe", exist, I can't know, as I can never get beyond my cognitive faculties. Why bother to define "traits", if I am a prisoner of my cognitive faculties and "the world (Universe) as such", if existent at all, is not fundamentally or directly accessible to me?
I've pondered subjects like this myself, because we can only comprehend so much, even with technology. I know this is absurd by most, but what if Ghosts were different lifeforms we've just havent been able to detect properly. Then once you get into parallel universes theories and such...blah...
It's almost not worth talking about. We just end up talking out of our ass.
One of my friends on facebook left a status update something to the effect of "if you wished to blow out all the candles and they all blew out would your wish come true?". Me attempting to be logical I told him possibly you could make your ishy come true, measure the wind velocity given how many candles there was ect., he replied "stop with your metaphysical bullshit. I was appalled, I thought I was using logic.
if it didn't have meaning it wouldn't exist

It's a side effect of rejecting the concept of ideology and expecting yourself to justify everything you believe in.

This might help, idk-

i think you should consider a phenomenological approach to the topic of traits or, rather, categories if we use a kantian terminology.

hmmm....
trait: any specific point, or cumulation of specific points, that contributes to greater definition?
This really bakes my noodle. Metaphysics has to many brains in vats for me.

So what if its circular?

Do you know of the god gene? Maybe more genetic than memometic.
