The bagpipes came from Hittite slab at Eyuk in the Middle East, that was the first that we today have record of them. They were indeed called the Uillean pipes. That you are correct about, However the Uillean pipes was used by the Irish in war and funerals alike. The Scotts took the idea and begain to use them in celebration only after they seen the Irish using the Uillean pipes, and did so more as a mockery.
@Rayvinlunatic you're wrong... uilleann pipes' invention is dated between 1700 and 1800... it is presumed that the scottish adopted the use of bagpipes (mainly as a war instrument) from the irish when the irish still used to play the Irish Warpipes..
how could the uilleann pipes be a war instrument? they are played sitting down..
it is probably true that the origin of bagpipes is in the middle east, but surely they weren't called Uilleann Pipes for Uilleann Pipes are a Victorian instrument
Just so everyone knows, the bagpipes are a Scottish instrument. The Irish have a similar instrument called the Uillean pipes. Rather than blowing into a pipe like the bagpipes you squeeze a sound bag. Just to get the facts straight, as I am Irish myself. So just to let you know.
@livinikkishow be sure I know, because I am an uilleann piper...
"Bagpipe" is the definition for a family of instruments, including the Uilleann Pipes, the Great Highland Bagpipes, the Northumbrian and the Scottish Smallpipes, the German Sackpipa, the Italian Piva, Zampogna and Baghet, the Croatian Gajda, the Galician Gaita, the French Musette...
The Irish bagpipes are the Uilleann pipes, the Scottish bagpipes are the Great Highland Pipes... that's what I meant when I wrote "irish bagpipes"
Very beautiful sounding...I amd grateful you shared :)
