But WHY did she make you proud to be "English"? The Queen Mother was Scottish (daughter of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore). And as Queen she wasn't "Queen of England" as so many Americans mistakenly called her (and call her daughter, the current Queen) but Queen of Great Britain (which encompasses England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland.

Unlike Diana Spencer who needed the media to boost her ego, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother simply got on with the role of representing the people of the Uk and the Commonwealth. No crying on TV. No tell-all interviews. No pandering to public opion polls. Loved and respected for 80 years.

I agree. She was a great historical figure who learned from a very early age, not to discuss her feelings or opions in public. Senior members of a democratic monarchy have no business interfering with party political matters. We will never really know what the Queen Mother's views were on anything. She had personal friends from all sides of the political spectrum. On the one hand she was said to be a big admirer of Thatcher and yet she supported the miners during the Miners Strike. A great lady.

The advantage of monarchy is that the symbol of the nation, chief of state and head of the armed forces does not exercise political power; and the person who exercises political power is not the symbol of the country, the chief of state and the head of the armed forces. At the time of the Queen's visit to Germany in 1978, I was 14. It made a deep and lasting impression on me and it turned out that this moment would quite literally change my life. Ever since then, I have been fascinated by everything connected with Great Britain, especially Her Majesty.

Over the past 50 years she has been, and still remains, the best advertisement for her country.I hope the people of the UK preserve this unique and fine institution for the future.
