  • A basic piece of jazz history. Ragtime bass with the left hand and Fatha's trumpet style in the right hand. I admire this man who got better with each year he lived.

  • omg.... I wish earl was my friend,

  • Wow! To hear the master break it down like that is a great treat! His lingering high octave lick emulating a sustained trumpet note is regarded by many as a typical Herbie Hancock lick - I wonder who young Herbie was checking out growing up in Earl Hines' stomping grounds of Chicago.... :)

  • What is this show?

  • 4:45 wow.

  • Amazing film showing that he never forgot any of his prior piano styles! Wonderful. I wonder what year this film was shot.

  • Love the way he smiles while playing and goes "ha, ha" when he has finished. Love you, Earl!

  • one handed octave glissando at 7:20!

  • Is the remaining parts of this show/video available anywhere?

  • A Major 10th? Just thinking about hitting a major 10th chord is hurting my hand. I can hardly hit a major 8th. Great video, thanks for posting.

  • those tenths sound so nice

anyone know any tunes where he primarily uses them?

  • Art Tatum's favorite piano player, that tells a lot.

  • @earsoup where did u hear that??

  • Wiki says:- 'According to pianist Teddy Wilson and saxophonist Eddie Barefield, "Art Tatum's favorite jazz piano player was Earl Hines. He [Tatum] used to buy all of Earl's records and would improvise on them. He'd play the record but he'd improvise over what Earl was doing ..... course, when you heard Art play you didn't hear nothing of anybody but Art. But he got his ideas from Earl's style of playing - but Earl never knew that". From "Too Marvelous for Words": The Life and Genius of Art Tatum

  • It's a privilege to be able to watch a master at work. Just beautiful. :-)

  • I wish there would be audio books on things like this so that I can learn different types of playing while on the bus with an mp3 player rather than trying to think up of everything all the time in the noise.
