  • Nice beard

  • I just think it's astonishing that anyone has to convince anyone that aging is bad.

I can't seem to wrap my head around it at all, but there it is.

  • @toddmorrow1

People don't think of aging as "bad" or as a problem...people see it just as a fact of life. It's a matter of perspective. Certainly, if the issue were brought up in conversation, anyone would say that aging/death was bad. Another speaker at a different TED conference spoke about certain problems being invisible to people because they are either too big or too common/too familiar. I think that it applies with aging/death.

  • Here is the question, How can you keep all the expriences of life in all its stages from childhood to old age when you are still active like a 25 years old?, differnet exprience only can be achieved or realized when the body slows down, othewise a man in the football flied will run forever over this stupid ball for the rest of his life, if his body doesn't slows down and could no longer run fast. if he spend time on the brian from detoriateing would have much benefint than the physical aging

  • look up transhumanism

  • De Gray really needs a makeover. Not just physically. Don't get me wrong, I find his ideas exciting and his arguments worthwhile. I just don't think his personal presentation is one that will convince many. Until, y'know, he gets proven right.

  • I SUPPORT THE ONE CHILD POLICY!

  • Doesn't this technology mean, that, really, especially the rich and powerful will live longer? And then at the same time, those who do will want to sacrifice everything, and everyone, for their expensive life extension. I suggest reading the book "Super Sad True Lovestory".

  • @alpenjon At first, yes.

But it's been that way throughout all of history. It's that way right now. It will be that way tomorrow.

  • 0:24

  • If anyone is interested I have a facebook group called life extension should be an important priority, if anyone is interested in joining.

  • "Mama always said, dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't."

  • “Do not try to live forever. You will not succeed.” George Bernard Shaw

  • @golf23101987

So one guy says "don't try to live forever" and you're supposed to believe him? can he see into the future? does he have some scientific evidence to back up his claim?

  • This man is a dangerous ideologist - an elitarian fascist behind a legere Hippie Fassade

  • OH AUBREY I SOOOO WISH YOU WERE NOT MARRIED..

  • he's slurring through his beard hair.

  • Immortality is not what he is talking about. That implies you will never die. You will still be vulnerable to choking, or getting hit by a bus, falling down an elevator shaft, etc. What he is talking about is extending potential life and giving people a choice about how long they would like to live. Then, if they decide they've had enough, they have a choice to not keep going.

  • He reminds me of Alan Moore

  • Who other than Pharmanex is providing real solutions to aging?

Pharmanex now has product in the market and has a plan and system to discover more.

  • @AntiAgeTechnology Univera and its sister company, Unigen.

  • dude aubrey grey has an epic beard....i'm calling it the Aubrey.... HAha im growing an aubrey

  • Lets hope we keep avancing, would be good!

  • ..........................Don´t waste your money on useless smartphones, flatscreens and cars with parc assistance - things you don´t really need to lead a happy life. Think about donating to his foundation even if it´s not much. This man´s fight against the cruelty of human ageing has to be supported................................

  • I think peters griffin's birds found a new home lol

  • putting a shirt on would not be an easy task with such a glorious mane

  • I couldnt think of anything worse than being trapped in the prison that is the human mind for eternity. Its the FEAR of death that needs to be conquered, not death itself. Anyway, everybody will have the choice: Eternity in prison, or a humble death.

  • @mccoya2 Having been into Eckhart and others like him for awhile i knida see Your point, as an Ego though I would like the chioce of staying in ego as long as I like hhahaha I do get what U mean though by the lack of freedom being locked into a busy mind, when physical death comes though then "U" prob cease to exist anyway, so maybe the point of being here is to let go of the "prison" while still in the body, but heck I'm just posing questions.

  • @mccoya2 Exactly.

  • The problem I see with this is over population. With children being born all the time and people living to be 1000, the earth is going to fill up pretty quick lol

  • Nobody should live forever, only me - so I can be God among men. MUHAHAHAHA

Just kidding, but I think once we figure out aging, we'll then need to deal with other vulnerabilities. I am confident one day Aubrey's goals will be achieved.

However, once done - we need to reinforce ourselves, with additional defenses, bulletproof skin, oxygen independence, perhaps solar powered skin, so we don't starve to death - but only ever feel weak without food. etc etc

  • Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themself on a rainy afternoon.

  • @Hermoor millions long for immortality who do know what to do with themselves on a rainy afternoon

  • 20 sec intro is unnecessary.

  • The prophet of immortality.

  • Is it just me, or does Aubrey look younger than his 2007 TED talk?

  • The more TedTalks (TedX, TedWomen, TedMed, etc.) that I watch, the more disappointed I become with the so-called leaders of industry. They seem to constantly rehash each others' ideas with slightly different spins or apparently conflicting opinions, despite the fact that in order to achieve what they have achieved, they stand on the shoulders of giants. Without trust funds, none of these people would have done anything with their lives.

  • He needs to calm down..................the trick to fighting his nervousness is to consciously say things slower.

  • "Aubrey de Grey passionately talks about the ultimate quest for significantly longer, healthier beard!" That's the TED talk I wanna see.

  • bryan callen too.

  • joe rogan sent me

  • We need a Person who can convince in a grade like HITLER did for Nazism in his time.

Or a popular person, a movie star that the mass people will follow and do.

  • @EnricoSWE

    I agree.

  • @EnricoSWE Yeah, that mentality worked out really well for everyone.

  • We need a Person who can convince in a grade like HITLER did for Nazism in his time.

Or a popular person, a movie star that the mass people will follow and do.

  • Fucking awesome beard, I want one!

  • Always got to be someone wanting to stop progress hasn't there?..

People sceptical of the entire world of scientific progress, as if it's some inherent evil, hell bent on destruction.

Modern Health Care, Heart Surgery, Aeroplanes. All evil.

No doubt these views belong to literal readers of Religious texts, George Orwell's "1984", and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" (with a particularly negative slant).

  • @ExtremeBogom It depends on how you define progress. Happiness to me is the ultimate in progress, and that may or may not involve longer lifespans. As for technology, it depends on the kind and how it is used. Yes, it has brought all the improvements you have mentioned, and also the potential for resource depletion, nuclear holocaust and catastrophic global warming.

  • YOU SHALT NOT AGE!!!

  • @DocUnsane LOOOOOOOOOL :DDDD Gandalf win :DDDD

  • Wow he looks yound for 182

  • Truly the only thing to ever kill this man will be breaking his neck on the awesome beard.

  • the death will die

  • WTF is TEDMED?

  • This person is obviously a heavy LSD user, that thinks he can 'CURE AGING'

He drinks beer and eats candy every day, and considers himself a qualified person to discuss health and reverse disease ?

Health starts at the basic cellular health, and sugar is not one of those things...

This guy will be dead at 60.

  • @korvix the woman who lived 120 years drank a glass of wine every day and smoked. Candy isnt unhealthy if you dont eat too much

  • @korvix Nice critique, there, sport.

  • why does this sound soo much like southpark

the way he talks, his voice

    sounds like a southpark episode.

  • pero cual es la formula a seguir? carajo!

  • @tocaplay Yo me pregunto lo mismo!

  • To me death is the final relief of a good long (or short) life. To me immortality would be a curse, and I don't think I'm alone with this either.

  • @Rebphoenix Indeed, you're not alone at all. There are plenty life-hating retards like you, out there. THIS should be humanity's FIRST concern. Why bother with hunger, and disease, if ageing will blow it up anyway?

  • @PedroNGCProductions Aubrey's work is ill-thought out. Fountain of youth NONSENSE.

  • @Kostly

So better than you have tried to debunk him and failed.

Can you explain why it is ill thought out?

  • @Rebphoenix Looking at this garbage from a viewpoint outside of humanity, shows you how this "work" will destroy the earth. We're already on the brink of making this planet uninhabitable.

  • @Kostly I agree. Imagine having all the assholes throughout history stick with us for all eternity.

  • @Rebphoenix

Ass holes and criminals would never stick with us. As any one with criminal records would be forever forbidden to do any type regenerating therapy and therefore doomed to die a "natural death" while others life goes on. Simple. And you know what? I just love that idea.

It's a great way to make criminality drop.

  • @SKarmytech Yes, what a great ethical way to deal with people!

  • @Rebphoenix Imagine all the loss when great people die. It takes decades for an individual, even a talented one, to become proficient in intellectual crafts. When you have a doctor who is an asset to the world for the research they do it takes decades for someone else to get to their former level. Furthermore, how much more advanced would those people be if given more time to improve?

  • @Kostly

If you feel so guilty about being human then go commit suicide

  • @Rebphoenix but life extension and qulaity of life improvement wouldn't neccessarily be a bad thing

  • @Rebphoenix When you start shitting blood you'll think differently We see little criticism on incremental health advancements - I think that Aubrey's argument is such a jump forward that it un-nerves people.

However the pace of technological advancement is obviously increasing - unless you are living in a box - so we need to start thinking about this NOW as immortality is not far away in human terms. Look at the impact on pensions due to a minimal increase in life expectancy for a teaser!

  • @SidandCoke I get your point, however I don't see this particular improvement in technology as a positive thing.

  • @Rebphoenix you are not alone, but I don't want you deathlovers condemning me to a short life.

  • When they discover a true way to prevent the aging process, the government will step in and ban this product or therapy. Why you ask? Exponential growth due to instant demand, it will likely result in peak global population within the next decade. This in turn will exhaust all the resources and will cause a global catastrophe. Well, it's a good thing this will be unlikely due to the fact of the complexities of the aging process, not one single therapy or method will prevent aging.

  • @Zenome How can people still be this (Zenome) dumb? Aubrey aproached all those 'stupidnesses' in this freakin video, didn't you even bother to hear?

  • @Zenome Not everyone will be able to afford this "therapy". Only, once again, the very rich will be able to afford it. They'll want this so they can maintain their grip on humanity for as long as possible.

  • @Kostly Only 'the rich' can afford anything new. Like cars and cell phones....

  • @Kostly And at the moment the rich receive better treatment in old age than poorer people. So what exactly are you trying to avoid? - clearly not pain and suffering... your intellectual dishonesty is staggering.

  • He should play Radagast in the hobbit.

  • I could wrap myself up in that beard. #_#

  • Age 47 but looks like average 30 year old, looks very healthy for 47.

  • This guy spends a tremendous amount of time talking about everything except what to actually do to maintain youth. Should we? Will we save money? Quit your babbling, and spit out the important details, con man. You talk too much, yet say too little, always a definite sign of not enough content.

  • @PUFFTHEMAGICMARMOT You miss the audience and purpose. The purpose isn't to add 10 more years to someone's life (which is about as much as any average regimen will do) but to fundamentally reverse the aging process.

Compared to cancer, heart disease, alzheimer's, diabetes, and other diseases, aging is a much more common factor in people's death, yet the funding for anti-aging pales in comparison to any of those. And that's his target, one that requires research, as we don't have the answers.

  • I think we can all come together and agree that his beard is EPIC

  • Want to live 40% longer now even if 60 yr old. An old technology from1960's works!!

    --------------------------------------------DEPRENYL-----------------------------------------------------

Preferably the 99.99% pure selegiline citrate. Also see 109 yr old that looks and acts 70 by eating small amounts of food which are raw fruits, vegies and occasional steamed fish. google Bernando LaPallo. So by combining the 2 you should make it to 120 so we can take advantage of new repair technologies

  • Quick Summary:

    1. Aging is a problem: suffering, death should be avoided. (1:00-3:00)

    2. Thoughts on death: when do you wish to die?/how? (3:00-5:00)

    3. Regenerative medicine offers a way to slow/stop aging. By halting damage secondary to metabolism, aging can be halted. Halting can be done by simple maintenance of the body.

    4. The human body is a machine. (11:00 :12:00 )

    Book Pitch at 15:20.

    Novel word: "longevity escape velocity"

  • His 2006 talk at TED was better. ted.com/talks/aubrey_de_grey_says_we_can_avoid_aging.html

  • Totally disagree, I have watched both and several other Aubrey videos. He is smother, better slides and more entertaining and enthusiastic. His job as he tells it is to promote the health benefits of anti aging and I found this video as great.

  • I want to see Aubrey debate a critic who has a lot of credibility...

Just because I feel like Aubrey might win.

  • Aubrey needs to upgrade his vocabulary, god...

  • @li7liquid Maybe so,but he is after all a computer scientist and biologist(more biologist now though),it is not so important how he says it,as long as he does,But I do agree that it has a great impact on people understanding and accepting his speeches.

  • Guthrie Govan needs to grow his beard.

  • I won't examine the desirability because I don't think it's feasible.

    I won't examine the feasibility because I don't think it's desirable

    Yep, heard that a lot.

    Aging will be defeated.

"When" is not a matter of science, but a matter of reason winning over superstition and tradition.

So "When?" If people reasoned, it could happen in 5 to 10 years. But given that they don't, it will probably take 50 or more.

  • @neoaeonian

Maybe, but I maybe sound silly or naive.. but most of people is turning to be more reasonable than 10 or 20 years ago.. what we see in christianity or islam is.. in my judgement, the last stand of extremely conservative society against these major break throughs in science.

  • @Necropedophile90 Re: people more reasonable than 20 years ago.

I became interested in anti-aging almost 50 years ago, and yes people are more reasonable by far than they were then. But not focused enough to spend the effort to solve this in a decade, though they could (witness the moon landing effort of 60s). The problem will solve itself, given trends. But to solve it quick, we'll need to focus. It's not a simple problem.

  • this is great! :)

  • he's to lazy to shave

  • @Nightwithe

    All those lazy Oxford people...

  • @Nightwithe I dont blame him!

  • I take his ideas seriously.

But I cant help but be distracted by the sheer awsomeness of his beard.

  • @spacecowboy95 haha yeah

  • The guy bleeds genius!

  • De Grey's beard may go beyond western standards, certainly draws the attention of many in front of new audiences. He has some pronunciation problem and seems insecure speaking in public, perhaps shifting the attention helps him relax his insecurity, who knows? In any case, his weird looks & oratory weaknesses doesn't knock down the neat line of his reasoning, whereas better orators with fake arguments manage to captivate their audiences but have no ideas to offer & make you waste your time.

  • @heathmoor

Having met Aubrey I can assure you he's more than comfortable around crowds -- but -- he always has a lot to say in such a very short space, and often seems to be thinking on his feet. His off-stage personality reminds me a little of Tom Wilkinson's portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in the American series John Adams.

  • Milions of people die of cancer, aids, aging etc. Now we can do research and

find cures for all diseases. If we can do it, then it becomes a moral

obligation to do so. Turning our back to people who are dying becomes

Imoral. Also, eventually it will be us. So you are turning your back

to YOU! Invest in biotech. Or research it. I am doing my part, as a

student of biotech. What are you doing?

With 2 or 3 times more money and brains in biotech we could cure all diseases in 10 years.

  • Merlin is alive!

  • your right name must be DORIAN!!.......except this you are right!!!!!!!!

  • Respect the BEARD!

  • Whether his ideas take 50 or 500 years to come to fruition, future Homos will regard Aubrey de Grey as the most important Homo sapien to this point in history.

  • He's the merlin of science!!!!!!!!

  • @BenNCM What's tasteless about it? It's the truth.

  • @frusciantelove You fucking moron. I will waste no further time on scum like you.

  • @BenNCM I'm not comfortable with 100,000 innocent people dying every day, particularly not through the vicious processes of aging. Are you? Does it really matter if a terrorist organization orchestrates the deaths? Slow, painful death is bad. Period.

  • @BenNCM It's a necessary extreme in order to put the reality of how bad the problem is that we all ignore every single day.

  • @Badhabitsjay We're not ignoring that problem, you people are ridiculous really. There's easily $200 billion dollars spend on medical research every year, that's more than what's spend on space programs and fundamental physics combined.

If anything we are ignoring the fact that we should develop interstellar travel, real energy solutions and methods to deflect meteors if we want to ensure the survival of our SPECIES. But no, having an erection when you're 80 is a lot more important.

  • @noxure I think you misunderstood, we do ignore the problem because we consider ageing to be "natural". Anything that steps into a person's philosophical boundary as sounding like immortality instantly makes them brand you a tin foil hat.

The extreme examples and imagery is necessary to illicit a positive response from a typically negative audience.

  • @Badhabitsjay True, the "fun -> not fun" slide is pretty epic. It's necessary to have this debate, because sooner our later science and technology will allow us to maintain a human body like any other machine and society should be prepared for it. But I think it's wrong to make it a priority to drastically extend peoples lifespans as long as there are still many who don't even have the chance to lead a 'natural' life.

  • @noxure Actually, I think focusing on ageing is far more important, the only places the majority don't get to lead a "natural" life are third world countries, this isn't a scientific or medical problem, it's an infrastructure problem and tehrefore not relevant to the scientific discussion. The biggest killer in our day and age is ageing, the second biggest killer is cancer, in order for us to defeat ageing we have to defeat cancer as cancer falls into the category of "cells reproducing too much"

  • @Badhabitsjay Re: in order to defeat aging we have to defeat cancer

If we defeat aging and ignore cancer, we'll save far more lives than if we defeat cancer and ignore aging. Cancer is far, far more prevalent in 70 year olds than in 20 year olds. Turning every 70 year old back to a 20 year old will greatly lower the death rate from cancer by over 80%. But ending all cancer would only slightly lower the death rate from age related illness.

  • @neoaeonian I think you have a major misunderstanding of the problem here. Cancer is an age related illness, 2 of the major problems of aging are cells that stop reproducing properly(cell degradation - visual symptoms of aging) and cells that start over reproducing (cancer).

They are two completely linked problems I'm afraid. Failure to understand that is a failure to understand one of the simplest of things in life extension science.

  • @Badhabitsjay re: Cancer and Aging are linked -

Only in regards to telomere lengthening mechanisms, which both cancer and anti-aging require.

The body already has cells that rebuild the telomeres, particularly the colon and muscles. The colon has slightly above avarage cancer rates, the muscles do not. Cancer (other than early detection) is not the low-hanging fruit that will extend most lives.

Cure cancer and people will die at 80% the rate they are now. Cure aging and it would be 10%.

  • @BenNCM No really. Please explain to us why it's tasteless? He's saying the death toll from aging is a tragedy. He really means it. Why shouldn't he compare it to something like 9/11 to make that point?

I'm not picking a fight. I genuinely want to know what you mean.

  • He has his beard so long for he carries pints in it.

  • well done sir

  • He looks like a Son of Blackbeard. :D

  • Understanding the above distinction is key to inculcating an awareness of this work that encourages its continued development in a positive way.

Aubrey, while I love hearing you speak, what you need is a real media, advertising, and PR effort to bring your work to the cultural tipping point in the strategically best possible way.

  • @snowdwellr

You should email him. I sincerely doubt he'll get this.

Suggest a PR. Hell, find a PR initiative, or someone he could hire. He answers his emails. I've emailed him.

  • @snowdwellr He can make that possible. All he has to do is shave that beard.

  • One minor point in re 16:48 (that also builds on the other two comments above):

The way the press treats your work, Aubrey, is not designed to keep readers emotionally distant from the issue. Rather, it is designed to do precisely the opposite: engage their most deeply seeded hopes and fears. What the media's treatment does is keep people *intellectually* distant.

  • I agree, hughtub, it would also, I hope, help people take his very important ideas more seriously.

  • Brilliant guy but minimalism is a virtue and a long beard is too high maintenance to be ideal. Oughta trim it to just a few inches long at most.

  • @hughtub Ha! Good joke!
