The more RAM you have the slower the boot because it checks all the RAM first.

You have to remeber the newer Mac runs on DDR3 You could have 2Gb of ram running well and way faster then 4Gbs of DDR2 or DDR for that matter

well ddr3 is basically a newer RAM, the biggest difference from the ddr2 to the ddr3 would be the ddr2's fastest frequency will be 667MHZ although there are some ddr2's that run at 1066MHZ, those are the high end version that costs alot more, therefore the ddr3 runs at a higher frequency that is 1066MHZ and ive heard that the ddr3 has a lower power consumption

yeahh ddr3 ram is faster than ddr2 ram......usually, ddr2 ram is 667 mhz or 800 mhz while ddr3 ram can be 1066 mhz to i think 1600 mhz.......so that means if your on a game and loading something i think the ddr3 ram will be faster and ebtter for multiasking.

The aluminum one is a lot faster than the white one... Sorry to disappoint you guys...

The only reason that the white one was faster here is because in the boot up time the memory is very very VERY important so since it has double the memory it started faster! (but not that much faster!)

what is faster in the aluminium one? if the ram and processor are the same? is it the fact the the aluminum mac has DDR3 ram rather than DDR2? and if so can white macbooks take DDR3??

A white macbook cannot take ddr3 memory. You cannot even fit a ddr3 memory in a ddr2 slot.

The memory in the new macbooks is a lot faster than before. Also another factor that the new macbooks are faster is their graphics processor.

The nvidia9400m in the new macbooks is around 500% faster than the previous integrated intel. So with the help of openGL (openCl is on its way) the system runs faster...

There are other things that make it faster but there is this 500 characters limit.

cool, you know your stuff. i still love my white one , 2,4 with 2gig of ddr2 is plenty for me right now .i do wonder how much difference these tiny spec improvements really make practically, the are never really huge leaps in the market of technology it seems. ive concidered getting 4 g ram but im not sure its worth it m what do you think? would it be a noticable difference? cheers

It will only make a change if you tend to have multiple applications open at the same time, or if you use memory intensive applications like video editing (even imovie could be one) or music production etc.

Programs use your memory to store the thing that you are working on so that you don't have to use your hard disc all the time (which is a lot slower than your memory), so the more memory you have available the more efficient your macbook will be for those kind of operations.

So it depends...

how would graphics affect boot up speed? if anything loading the drivers would make it slower, surely?

they both have the same processor, so with equal amounts of RAM the boot up times would be around the same. the only thing that makes the new macbook a little faster is the ddr3 ram, that's all.

it actually does right under the screen. if you look down on the screen you should see it right by the hinge connecting the screen to the key board portion.
