Dick said "...battle for the AFC Championship and a chance to go to the Super Bowl." What I'd like to know is, didn't both teams have their chance in this game? If so, why did he say that the teams were battling for a chance to go to the Big Game? Shouldn't he have said that the teams would be battling for a berth in the Big Game, instead of a chance to go to it?
hmm there were Orange Bowl then moved Joe Robbie Stadium then changed to Pro player Stadium then Dolphins stadium then Land Shark Stadium and finally Sun Life Stadium geez too many stadium names u know lol
Yeah, they have changed stadium's name like socks lately... To everyone not from SoFla or too young to remember: The Dolphins have been at their current stadium (Under any of their aliases) since 1987... :)
Instead of a new stadium for the Marlins on the old Orange Bowl site, re-do SunLife stadium for the Marlins and build the stadium for the Dolphins on the old Orange Bowl site instead. Then the ghosts of Dolphins past will bring back the total winning tradition and Super Bowls just like in the Shula years!
@markofly76 Now that would be a great idea... Both the Marlins titles came at Whatever-They-Call-it-Now Stadium and the Dolphins have only been as far as the AFC title game since they left the OB... The Marlins would keep tradition and the Dolphins would recreate theirs (The OB was the BIGGEST home field advantage... they still own the longest home winning streak in NFL history and won close to if not more than 90% of their OB games during the Shula era)... Alas, its not to be... :)
Sweet find for the rarity just for the fact this would be the closest Chuck Noll would ever get to a Super Bowl, Don Shula's last Super Bowl trip (and Dan Marino's ONLY trip).
Not to mention the graphics, the cool intro and seeing a REALLY young (as in, was he even 30 yet) Bob Costas.
@MrJulius72 The Steelers did have a more than decent shot at making the Super Bowl in 1989... They were a blown 4th quarter lead in the Divisional round in Denver away from playing a very winnable AFC Championship in Cleveland... winning the Super Bowl that year once they got there would have been another story... :)
@WREYtube Dude, that year was so great. Had they made the Super Bowl in '89 with that squad, they could have lost 70-0 and it still would have been a tremendous year.
@MrJulius72 Him and Merlin Olsen were two of the all time best. Don Criqui and John Brodie were great together also. Football teams back in that time had such personality and made it such a special time but looking back, the annoncers of that era played a big part during that special time also.
Yup, the Orange Bowl was the Dolphins home from 1966-86... I was at Joe Robbie Stadium for their first regular season game there ever in October 1987 against Kansas City... unfortunately, there were also about 50000 no-shows for that game (Fins won it 42-0)... :)
@WREYtube 50000 no shows with Dan Marino at QB and Mark Duper at WR???. it's sad that Miami is sort of notorious for being bad fans especially the Hurricane home games that couldn't sell out the orange bowl (55,000 capacity wasn't it?) ..i got to go to Joe Robbie once to see the Carquest bowl in 1995 very nice stadium out in the middle of nowhere almost...
The Dolphins draw pretty well (They have sold out every game since early 1998), but fans were in no mood to see that game, even with the new stadium... It was a 'Strike' game with Kyle Mackey starting at QB! The OB could sit over 80000 depending on if they put in those bleachers in the open end... but yeah, Canes fans do not show up unless its a big game... its even worse now that they play 25 miles from the campus (Only 60000 for the Oklahoma game!)... :)
AH Yes Dick Enberg and Merlin Olson!!!

Anytime I hear Dick Enberg's voice, it just makes me think of football. One of my all-time favorites. OH MY!"

The networks' NFL telecasts were considerably more understated back then. In other words, considerably better.

Why did you cut off the invocation? Humph!

They used to have an invocation??? I think you'll only see that before auto races today.

@marquettefootball Wow - I agree - an invocation? - Wow - that is cool.

Leading up to the Super Bowl, I took to calling it the "Just Pick a Name and Stick to It" Stadium.

@ChristianKidsShowFan Closest maybe in the 80's, but last I checked, Noll has 4 rings and a bust in Canton. Get your facts straight.

@ChristianKidsShowFan Im sure you meant this was Chuck Noll's last real shot at making the Super Bowl after so many championships in the 70's, right?
