I am just learning now that Cornell MacNeil had passed. He was a credit to opera. He will be missed. May his life and music be celebrated for many many years to come. I own the recordings of Pagliacci and Cavaleria Rusticana he made with Mario Del Monaco.
MacNeil wasn't at his best in the 1977 Rigoletto broadcast. As I recall, he had been quite ill, so Milnes sang the first performance, then Mac returned, although still not completely well. He sounds rather better in the Otello excerpt, which was taped nearly a year later.
As impressive as many of these excerpts are, I do wish this video offered more of Mac's work in his prime, like the 1965 Tosca. There his huge, beautiful voice pours forth freely --
@stevevandien I thought he did very well in the '77 Rigoletto. Obviously, he wasn't as good as in the recording with Sutherland in 1960, but his high notes were still spot on and beautiful to boot!
Thank you so much for this video. I am fairly 'new' to opera and came to it through the DVD Amadeus. I keep discovering beautiful pieces and voices and loving every minute ! This is such a great and wonderful voice - thank you again. I am now subscribing to your channel.
I was lucky to hear MacNeil in his "prime". These examples are good but not the "great" earlier performances we heard. But then i was lucky to hear Warren in his prime also- a world of opera long gone- forever.
I really feel sad about this great artist's death. As a young Baritone about to start my undergraduate degree in vocal performance, MacNeil is one of my biggest idols. If I can be half the musician this man was, I will have exceeded my goals.
MacNeil's greatest years were in the 60's. I heard him in many operas then. Ernani, where he always stole the show, Rigoletto, best I ever heard, and so many more. I was very lucky!
Riposa in pace e quando puoi ringrazia il Creatore con il tuo splendido canto! arrivederci
