This song was ok w/just Rolie on the vocals but w/Steve it's becomes a GREAT song. I wish they'd redone this on another album. Quite excellent. I LOVED Journey when GR was w/the band. He gave the band a richer, fuller sound on vocals and his use of the organ gave Journey a distinct sound. Much more so than w/JC.
@goallnight Yes, he was the core that Herbert built the band around, even though I find Herbert thinking of Neal like his 'son' a little creepy the way he always talks about him, BUT, they had 3 albums with Neal before Steve and couldn't get a single song on the radio & were about to be dropped from the label. It was Steve that brought them into commercial success, and the chemistry between Steve and Schon that was the core of the songwriting team, with extra chemistry later from Cain.
@gluchnurse Their manager def. knew that Perry's voice would help sell records, so he made a smart business decision by bringing in Perry. Rolie's more prog-rock style just wasn't gonna sell.
Ted Nugent was trying to get Neal for the Amboy Dukes.. He wasnt fast enough and couldnt find him before they had began to create Journey... Wow.. Ted and Neal on the same stage.. in the same band.. The resulting records would've been monsters
@fightback38 And while they would have shared the wedding and bedding routine, since Nugent was so anti substance abuse, maybe he could have helped Neal curb his alcoholism...
Not one of my favorite songs, bur damm they were good; I like alot of the post Rolie tunes but for me, I prefer the older stuff with him as well as some of the stuff prior to Perry.
good sound,BUT make no mistake...pre-perry and everything after is 2 totally separate bands.....the original 4 made music light years ahead of their time...thank you (original journey)
Wow! I never knew that Steve Perry ever performed the pre-Perry songs with Journey! I had the In the Beginning album, which is a double LP compilation album, and it had this song and many of the greats. Kahoutek , Topaz, In My Lonely Feeling, and my personal favorite, I'm Gonna Leave You. Awesome music for those of us who were less concerned with catchy lyrics and liked the "Frenzic guitar playing" I believe one critic described it as. Space Man was pretty cool as well.
@SkullydogXXX Same here, man. Never knew Perry sang tunes from that time but I guess he must have when the Perry-era catalog was no more than one album.
@Vermontist Yeah, he does that! And he stands there as if he's playing keyboard with his hands, too! I have never, ever seen a man with such perfect rhythm from his hair to the toes of his tennies, I LOVE to watch him, even when he's not singing!
He,(Rolie), also got fed-up fighting with Schon about the bands musical direction.Just like Perry had to later.Schon hates anything heavily motown influenced which Perry loves.R.I.P. SAM COOKE !!!!!!
I just got a rare limited sampler Journey CD with a song called "Good Times" on it...let my husband listen & asked,"What's this sound like?" He said, "Sam Cooke"! one of Perry's idols.
@MICKJAC08 Whatever...let's not forget what Gregg himself said about leaving, knowing he was leaving just what he'd always dreamed to be: he wanted a family of his own, and said "You couuldn't have paid me a million dollars to pack another suitcase..." and hit the road. Whatever differences there were among the band (and lord knows, there were plenty!) Gregg (to our loss, sadly) left primarily for his own personal reasons. I still love him, and don't like all these put-downs on him.
i had this on vhs when it first came out and i made the mistake of letting someone borrow it and i never got it back i was 21 then and now i`m 52so thanks for posting this
@DILLIGAF425 This show is available on ebay on DVD! I have it, it's great. They have a big blues jam with a bunch of greats; I'm not a blues fan so can't remember them all but Albert King is there, several others. I know I got it on either ebay or amazon, most likely ebay. Look for it, they really get down!
I really like this music style of Journey as much as I like the ballads that Steve sang. And then it all fell apart when he left. Journey really should return to this style of music right now, and stop committing musical suicide by bringing in other dudes to sing the songs Perry made famous. There's only one Steve Perry in the world. Rolie isn't a bad singer either, of course he has his own style....wonder why he left the group. Was it because of Steve, or because the style of music changed?
@wheelinthesky300 I don't think that Greg Rollie liked the direction the band was taking, right before the 80's....I believe he mentioned that Steve Perry started to become a "crooner" and that he wanted no part of it.
@Karenfan09---I think you've got that just a tad off. Rolie & the rest of the band were hesitant to warm up to SP at first because they told Herbert that he "sounds like a crooner." The rest of it may very well be accurate but who could ever compete with Steve's pipes anyway? It's a shame Rolie left, I liked him and it would have been interesting to see what would've happened with the music had he stayed.
Neal and Steve Lukather they had more feel with 3 fingers then most cats with 4 back in the day Neal's solo on this is priceless listen to it more then once, speed is nice but good timing and feel gets you the gig everytime!
I think Rolie was a great singer he just didn't have the distinctive pipes that Perry did (does). You always knew it was Journey on the radio from the first note Perry sang. I actually love them both together!
I have noticed that Steve Perry and the guys used to really dress up in their early years 1978-1980(look at the videos). But by the 1980's they seem to have lost interest in their attire. They really looked good in these late 70's videos!
Times and fashions changed. By the 80s bands weren't dressing up anymore; everybody was going on stage in jeans and tshirts. Take a look at what they wore during their 88 RoR tour - dead-on late 80s fashion. None of it matters to me, though, because the music is timeless.
I'm not going to get into a mental crossfire with anyone here - Isn't enough to just love the music AND NOT TO KNOCK ANYONE'S TALENTS? I think that both Perry and Rolie are very talented - however, I think it's safe to say that neither you or I were there to see any "fragile male egos" get crushed. Dude, why can't you just enjoy the music? What's done is done - and the contribution that Gregg Rolie made in his tenure with Journey was a great one :) Peace.
Steve couldn't help it if his vocals upstaged Gregs. Poor Greg, he was so jealous even when Steve brought the band so much success Greg quit because the spotilight wasn't on him. Whatever, they went on to even greater success. Greg's best song with Journey was co lead vocals with Steve on Feelin That Way.
Poor Gregg??? Whatever! Gregg Rolie did NOT leave the band because of any type of jealousy toward Steve or because the "spotlight wasn't on him." Yeah, I'll agree that Journey went on to have much success, which they totally deserved because they're a kick @ss band! However - don't knock Rolie - just because he's underrated doesn't mean he's not successful...HE is still touring with his own band...where's Perry? Just sayin' .
valentinebaby73: the fragile male ego was never more so represented by Gregg Rolie's decision to leave Journey at the height of their fame because he was not content with the success of Journey, he had been pushed aside as the lead singer. It was not enough to have success, he wanted the spotlight, it was very tough on his ego when he was no longer the frontman. Of course he is still touring because his ego needs constant stroking!
Funny, I just kinda realized that Steve 'plays' his nose. Like an instrument - when he goes into his upper range his voice comes out his adenoids and nasal area and he sort plays his nose. That's where that great keening sound comes from. Streisand kinda does the same thing. Love live great singers with great schnozes.
mariet2, this is so great! I forgot about Steve's white Capezio dance shoes! Neal's 'fro! Ross's porn 'stache. I wonder if Aynsley and Gregg kick themselves for leaving.
For the record (well, onofficially because I'm not in the band), Greg Rollie retired from the band, but Aynsley Dunbar was fired and replaced by Steve Smith at the request of Steve Perry.

He was in high demand and essentially had his choice of where to go (can't remember what band, but they were bigger than Journey at that time). I knew someone who knew Dunbar & that was the impression I got. More of a timing thing than any other reason.
I know... the group on the band's right side are like corpses... if they only knew how lucky they were... plus journey was kicking ass at this show!!!!!!!!
lmao, you are right girl, Journey are on fire here, i just wish i had seen them back then, what a combination or rhythm, pace, driving beat, Steve's voice and Neils astonishing talent.
Man I wish the band had stayed on the path as first 3 albums. Who knows what ungodly tunes they would have given us. I'll never forget how perplexed, dumbfounded I was when I came home with that Infinity album and dropped that needle in the groove for the first time in 78. I was so pumped, ready to hear how they were going to top "Next".
They originally recorded this without Steve Perry and it was a hot tune even then. Neil Schon simply burned up the frets on this song and Aynsley Dunbar proved why he was one of the best drummers in rock history.
I'll at least agree about Rolie but not A.D. Steve Smith was and is a much better player. Not taking anything away from A.D. because I've always admired his playing too.
Sorry, but Perry isn't what makes this song. You can argue that Perry is what makes a few songs -- Faithfully, Patiently, Still They Ride, but this song is a true mix of the talents of all the members. Neil's solo is blistering, and the funk is just dripping off of Ross' bass.
