At this point Motown had moved the ladies beyond three girls singing at microphone stands to fully choreographed productions with a lot of dance elements. The one regret that emerged in discussions after this appearance was that the songs were taken at far too slow a tempo, and that was corrected. Motown was amazed when Diana departed and Jean succeeded her that the public barely seemed to notice. Many d.j.s were introducing "Up the Ladder" with "Here are Diana Ross and the Supremes!"
Nice! These outfits were on display when I visited the Supremes Gowns Exhibit and the quality is very high. A medium-weight lavender purple fabric with a little sheen to it. Intricate hand-stitched scrolling on the trouser legs and sleeves with hand-set rhinestones and pearls lining the jacket lapels. Of course, nothing but the best for our girls!
@book492 - an aweswome song called "It's Time to Break Down", from their album NEW WAYS BUT LOVE STAYS. Very cool song- its been post on YT, so check it out...
“Please Love Your Haters - As They Are Your Biggest Fans. How can u not love someone who dedicates there life to your existence?” I Love the person who said that and thought it was appropriate! I have often said this in my own words. Think about it and be Supreme!
Am I missing something? Why is there so much hate and arguing. Everyone has the right to their own opinion. I don't agree with everything that is said, but I do notice a lot of bashing. Mary, Cindy, Jean, and whomever else was in the group certainly has earned the right to build upon her legacy. Might as well. I ain;'t mad at any of them. This is a part of their lives and they sacrificed much to make it happen. If I was in the group, I'd be singing the songs too. Do yo thang ______.
@kpitt1204 You're NOT missing much! Just the same 2 or 3 sickos who go all over YT bitching about Diana, Mary, etc. Mental illness led them to believe that personal problems within the Supremes happened to THEM also! Of course this is lunacy but they seem to enjoy it and they express it with outrageous allegations or plain over the top lies. When you come to YT, I advise you to enjoy the videos and keep away from the comments.
@bellacharo LOL!!! i couldn't have said it better! I get hate mail from these people because i've actually said maybe it isnt so horrible that some people happen to like Diana AND Mary. It's frightening, especially that TWTR person- you'd think Diana Ross ran over his cat.
@mnmcv1 At times I can't believe "some" are holding a grudge against Diana Ross YEARS, YEARS, YEARS after she left the Supremes. A comment alleging the reason Miss Ross got to where she was / IS, was due to her relationship with Mr. Gordy. This just SHOWS their ignorance . . . the gals already had stung up No. 1s WAY BEFORE their relationship began. I wish those haters would just take it to another channel . . .
@mnmcv1 Diane Ross did,'t ran over my cat but she surely has part of the blame for Florence Ballards demise, the demise of THE SUPREMES and she's the ADULTERER that had BASTARD children (Rhonda Silberstein Gordy Ross) with Motown Berry Gordy while married to Mr. Bob Silberstein!
@TWTR4EVER - read what you just wrote, out loud. Do you hear yourself? Do you know how incredibly stupid you sound right now?
If I'm not hearing STUPID crap about Diana, I'm hearing crap about Mary. What the hell is wrong with you people? What the hell concern is it of yours who Diana's child is, or who she slept with? Mary admitted affairs with married men too- and so what? WHO THE HELL CARES??? I'm sick of your psychotic, illiterate rambling.
@mnmcv1 I hear myself loud and clear and there's plenty more regarding Diane that will be told over & over & over so neither time or her relentless PR machine have a chance to obscure it, at least in this forum:-)
TWTR4EVER, All Miss Mary "Reaped" was a Bankruptcy, a Few Handouts from Diana Ross & Cocaine Addiction, Diana remains a Legend, Miss Mary continues to cart around Diana's Old Costumes to make a Buck, No other Supreme can stand her, She caused them all "Nothing But Heartaches"
Mary Sucked when she sang Background for Diana Ross, Sucked when she sang Background for Jean Terrell & Continues to Suck to this Day, Nothing Like Consistancy
@bellacharo oh child Please..those FLoor Sweeping (Elephant Leg Bell Bottoms of the 70s only kept the floors shined and clean as they swepted them. here Jeans sounds off key in the begining and the worst i ever heard her sound. and I Like Jean. .she was good replacement but this song sucks ..no fitted for her voice. Mary of course is doing her bar room moves ..so Dated..Cindy look big as float and moving like she just learned the rountine. omg the 3 degrees would Smash the with their harmony.
@bigbear39ca As much as I hate to "feed the troll" how silly is that last sentence? It was DianE Ross who spread her legs for the MARRIED Berry Gordy and backstabed her friends-stomping all over them to get ahead. To Diane fans, there are two sets of rules: one set that the whole world has to live by, and another for Diane. She can do no wrong. She can bonk married men to her hearts content. Makes me wonder about your own personal morals. Do you backstab and fuck your way to anything you want?
@RareMusicalGems This "IDIOT" bigbear39ca is the same as TheReturnOfBigBear & OnlineAdministrator he goes to every video of THE 1970'S SUPREMES to denigrate & trash their performances and reputation when in all reality Diane Ross has done such a great job tarnishing her career by her actions that little needs to be said!
DIANE ERNESTINE ROSS IS A BACKSTABBING CONNING DECEITFUL ADULTERESS!
@RareMusicalGems sorry to Burst your bubble but apparently you didnt read Dreamgirl inwhich Mary admitted to having a boyfriend in each city Spreading her legs for Free rather than to Further her career..she FUCKED for FREE. Tom Jones tore that pussy up. for free..steve mcqueen, flip wilson..all Married MEN. ok. so get off the Diana opened her Legs. Clearly she had her legs Opened More than Diane, Flo, all the Vandellas and Marvelettes Put together. Read DREAMGIRL AGAIN. Marys Own words.
@RareMusicalGems , No it's only simpletons like you and your entourage of trolls that think like you and believe that sucking and fucking is going sell out concerts and sell millions of records. Berry would have dropped Diana like a hot rock, if he wasn't confident in her abilities.
@RareMusicalGems ok but while diane was spreadin her legs for berry and working on her craft because she certainly did quite well after her and berry STOPPED sleeping with each other. Yet Mary continued to Open her Legs for MARRIED MEN. like TOM JONES, Steve Mcqueen, Flip Wilson with no SOLO HITS and had a Boyfriend by her own admittence in every City. Speakin of backstab Mary back stabbed FLO training Cindy behind her back. Mary can do No wrong. Right. She also Fucks Married Men. SLUT.
@RareMusicalGems - no, that is not true. Some Diana fans happen to be Mary fans as well. I won't criticize either of them for their choices in life (and both made mistakes). It's stupid generalizing like this that fuels the fire. I'm not defending Bigbear (although its usually one of him against 3 or 4 Diana bashers). I'm tired of both sides going at it. It's childish AND pointless. I like them BOTH, and these alleged "rules for Diane fans" is a bunch of BS. It's SICKENING.
@OnlineAdministrator - you have to understand that bigbear is a Ross-ite. Everything without Diane is mediocre or worse to him. He is a Mary Wilson hater as seen on videos throughout YOUTUBE.
In retrospect, everyone involved agreed "Time To Break Down" had been taken too slow and in subsequent performances it was quickened. But the ambition of this medley shows how quickly the Supremes progressed beyond the Diana era.
This was taped in January - The song TIME TO BREAKDOWN was way before it's time - a masterpiece - nicely performed by Jean , Mary, and Cindy. It is a shame that no one other than The Jackson Five and Diana Ross mattered at Motown at that time - thus this song was never released as a single and has long be overlooked - produced by Frank Wilson this is among his greatest productions - Bravo to the post Diana Supremes - for this different and difficult to sing song - done great.
@ramona2400 I am sorry but it was NOT taped in January. It was taped in the Fall of 1970 because by Christmas 1970 "Stoned Love" was the number one R&B song in the country Christmas week. This performance here was the first time most people ever heard the song. They debut it on the Flip Wilson so it was impossible that this was taped in January 1971
just watching again. Love it. They look fantastic and younger than ever in this vid. I loved the dresses they wore but these pantsuits do make them look younger hahaha
@SinclairisCool It's called "Time to Breakdown" an early '70's masterpiece from the album "New Ways But Love Stays". Check it out in it's entirety here on Youtube.
My favorite television performance by JMC. These are also my favorite outfits that were designed for JMC. I believe Michael Travis was the creator of these suits. All three girls just look, move, and sound flawless. A truly great performance. No wonder they were initially so successful after Diana left.
P.S. I'm a big fan of Miss Ross so my last sentence wasn't a dig.
if i remember correctly during the skit, they mentioned they had a slow xmas season. this aired. jan. 7, 1971. tape is one thing but it wasnt seen til this date. . i do love this episode
@blackguy69 Mary says they did this performance in 1970. Sorry to break it to you. @blackguy69 No, what you don't understand is that Mary told me that the same thing happened when they TAPED their first Ed Sullivan Show appearance in 1964. It just happened that it was to air Christmas Week , so the they had to do it in advance more so than normal. They did this Flip Wilson appearance to debut the single "Stoned Love" which was released in October of 1970. This is their FIRST performance of the song. Mary should know so I will go with what she says.
To characterize someone as being "shy" when they chose to sing on national television in front of millions of viewers is about the dumbest thing I've heard or read in a while! Geez!
