I allways thought it must be polygonal water physics...
There was no way the water in Halo 3 was just effects.
If you were to park a Warthog in the water, You would see the water ripple against the side of the tires, and there would be no way that this could be an effect because the "effect" does not cycle and repeat.
God i hope they port this to PC like Halo 1 & 2. So much more could be done with it!
I believe the term for this is water physics, not effects, halo 3's water is similar to crysis and is made of many polygons, but crysis does not ripple in 3d it use's a simple 2d shader refraction texture, halo 3 use's heavy processing physics to make its water distort like that.
bioshocks water isn't that great (exept the first water with the plane crach..... oh sweet jesus that was good) Crysis has very nice water, as does halo 3......adn fallout 3 has nice ripples, so does oblivion (though obivions water texture is horrible)
Your name is Ratchet92, and you call me a fanboy because I said that Crysis' water is better than Resistance's? It's a known fact that Crysis is the best looking game in existence with the best lighting, shadowing, shaders, textures, facial animation and water.
Why don't you play Crysis before you say other shit looks better, hmm?
i like bioshock's water effects but i fink the water effects in gears of war 2 are much more awesome i tried on a level where i use a brumak and walk on all the imulsion and shot it and ripples were awesome!!!
Halo is a cartoon game. Any engine can be bent to look like something different than the game it's famous for making, but that doesn't change the system itself. The Halo engine has potential to make BEAUTIFUL photoreal water.... THey just didn't do it because it conflicted with the style. See the Beta water on Highground.
Although the geometry of Bioshocks water could genuinely ripple, you just had to force it with console commands which was retarded. Otherwise, yes you get that retarded flat, sprite.
I'm pretty sure BioShock's water ripples were simply refraction shaders. The lighting just gave the illusion of it being 3D. TES IV: Oblivion used the same thing. You didn't have to force it through console, by the way. It was enabled automatically if you played the game with Vista. They disabled it in XP for some reason.
I don't give a shit if the game I play is realistic or not. It's a form of fucking escapism, I don't want a fucking LIFE simulator. What's wrong with stylization anyway? It''s just proof that the game devs actually HAVE imagination.
well I guess that it doesn't look as good now as it did when it was launched when comparing these water effects to other games. but still I think this game has very realistic ripple effects.
Well the graphics and the water and such was awesome. But the rest was BLARGH! I got so disappointed of that game. Turned out to be so hyped on the graphics that they forgot about the other parts.
actually when you zoom in, the poly count in every "square foot" of water is in the thousands. those ripples are not animated textures. They are a simplified physics mesh.
If you ever played Halo 3 you would tell. I doubt a crappy youtube video is ideal to compare graphics, but whatever. Ignorance is bliss right?
The dynamic system is also present in the High Dynamic Range lighting system. This is the first system to offer a FULL spectrum of lighting on all surfaces and enviroments. So everything doesn't have to look wet to look good. (gow)(UT3)(haze) etc.. Honestly prejudice never got anyone anywhere, this game had the biggest budget of probably any in history, and the team working on it was the best money could buy. This is a gorgeous game watch a save film, zoom in and out on textures and you'll see.
Actually Halo3 is the first game to incorporate a full dynamic water system. Where the water is a fully interactive 3d surface, not a texture. The water reacts to every object it touches, and recognizes each objects weight ad buoyancy. This is similar to water simulations used in visual effects. So when you die in the water you will float with the current and rise and fall with the level of the water and waves. When a bullet hits the water it recognizes the velocity and angle that the bullet hit
"Actually Halo3 is the first game to incorporate a full dynamic water system" That is what you said. You did not say: Actually Halo3 is the first game to incorporate a full dynamic, smooth and detailed water system. Uncharted and tekkens system is not as nice as this fore sure, but it is indeed not just textures. FYI: I DO think before I speak. And also: I never spoke anything..I wrote.
@MrRaZaK and another thing they need to incorperate underwater physics and the ripple effects in the front of the tires or character. i think it looks stupid when people can just dive into water and after they break the surface they just slip through the water like a penguin. or when u drive through water and ur car just rapes the water to flatness
it may be prettier but it doesn't react to things in it, or if what you call react is a texture placed on the water when something hits it now thats ugly
now come on its not pathetic, the ripples are missing right but graphicswise its perfect. and crysis has good physics, just not in the water department. its was pretty much the first game where you could tear down small buildings
I had the camera in one hand and the controller in the other. so duh I cant really hold my camera still in one hand and controll the camera (in Halo) like I can with two hands.
what is the map?

Crysis and bioshock have the best looking water
Paumonsu 2 years ago 2
True. Crysis even has dynamic realtime water physics but its a work in progress mod. Bioshock has the best looking water in my opinion.

Unreal Engine 3's water effects behave like real water
xilefian 2 years ago
not totally,
to simulate real water you need a lot of computing power and even then you don't get close to real water.

NO. I didn't mean best LOOKING. Crysis is the best looking game by far, but the water EFFECTS aren't better.

Cryostasis has the best water effects. dynamic water particles make it so water puddles on its own.

It's pitch black, almost. Looks kinda like oil lol

@tehdaza GTA 4 came out after Halo 3, and has less polys in a given space. But yes, they are similar dynamic water operations.

what makes this water _water_?
faszika 2 years ago
Dynamic 3d ripples in the geometry that react to objects...
Not sprite animations like in crysis, or one flat poly with an animated shader like Bioshock/ Uncharted.
masterpiraka 2 years ago
i havent played crysis but i thought the water interactions there were more than just sprites.. guess not =D
faszika 2 years ago
Nope.
