Well guys, I interviewed Eon and Sekou last night before their gig in St Kilda, Melbourne and I wanted to clear this matter of "genre" up once and for all.
Clearly there is no "hanger" for their music at the present time. The guys themselves have said that.
So I asked if they could name the genre that they currently fit into, consisting of only them, what would they name it?
"Street Soul" Said Eon after a few moments.
"I could live with that." Said Sekou, nodding his head in appreciation.
@Jdhslightlystoopid1 This is true... all music must fall into a genre... If u actully look into the history of ska it comes from Jamaica... the only reason that the ska now adays have a big band sound to go along with it is because it's in a new wave... Big D and the Kids Table, Streetlight Manifesto they follow bands like the Toasters and Mighty Mighty Bosstones... Bedouin follows a diffrent school of ska... thier sound hails from the reggea legends that helped move ska
i love how in bedouin soundclash, the bass is one of the main instruments. most of the time the bass is just there to fatten up the sound, but yea, its an important instrument in bedouin soundclash.
@M00nChaserrr All musicians in my experience have a similar sound, nowhere near each other in sound most of the time. But when someone likes a particular sound we can look at their genre and find more similar. Simple as that. Why call all Art, Art. Because thats what it is. No matter what you name something that doesn't change the content so don't try and sound deep here lol.
man no offense but i think you need to let some air out of your balloons there, its not like theyre promoting heroin, and man, theye been underated for far too long its about time people took notice
Bedouin Soundclash is a nice combo. They have a very reggae and ska feel but they FUNK the shit out of their music. It's cool. If you pay attention, their really GREAT musicians, their ability to work together w/ just the beat and the sound is AMAZING and I love the vocals because he makes his voice work and it's pretty fucking original and it's not the type of voice you usually hear created to go with reggae or ska music. It's pretty badass.
I hate people that make up shit. why does any one care about other peoples opinions, especially when people don't know what the hell they are talking about, until you are in the music industry in a band that other people have heard keep the mouth shut. because really, you know shit. and i know there are now going to be people that want to try and spread there opinion, but to be honest, i dont give a shit and no one else really does either. so stfu
Rude boy, rudeboy, rudie, rudi or rudy were common terms for juvenile delinquents and criminals in 1960s Jamaica, and have since been used in other contexts. During the late-1970s 2 Tone ska revival in England, the terms rude boy, rude girl and other variations were often used to describe fans of that genre, and this new definition continued to be used in the third wave ska subculture.
dub is a way of mixing reggae, i never heard it as a drumming style, the drum here is def reggae, if you search the word ska on here, watch the first video, hear the drum beat, totally different. This is a reggae "one drop" beat that soundclash is using, called this way, because they always drop the one and start on the 2. it's all about playin on the off beats :) ska is much faster and has lots of swing.
LOL u sure dont know what you are sayin' dub is achieve with all instruments, not just drum beats lol but regardless, the dub drum beat is ONE DROP beat either way.
DUB is a music genre, evolved from reggae, that involves revisions of existing songs. The dub sound consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings & is achieved by significantly manipulating & reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasizing the drum and bass frequencies or 'riddim', adding extensive echo & reverb effects, panoramic LR delay, & dubbing occasional snippets of lyrics or instruments from the original version.
and ska has an upstroke guitar on every off beat. example: 1AND2AND2AND4AND. the guitar is played with an upward strokes on the and beats while the drums typically play a crossstick, normal beat (on any interval of 1,2,3,4) to enrich the scratching ska sound of the guitar. ska, having at least eighth beats, is much faster than this or typical reggae sounds. true, the bass in here is a somewhat walking bassline.however, its too emphasized for ska and has a more punk reggae influnece.this isnt ska
its definitely not ska or dub. ska has a constant playing of upstroke on the offbeat making a scratching (hence, 'ska') sound. also, ska drumming is a lot different and contains accents by playing cymbals occasionally. ska also seriously stresses a brass section which is nonexistent in this song. Dub contains riddim, bass and drums. typically not much lyrics in dub. i'd call this pop reggae, which is just as disgusting as pop rock or pop punk..
@scuzzbuzzproductions I agree with it being raggae and ska, definitely ska. Not bother by genre except for idoits who refer themselves as quote "punk as fuck". Get over yourselves!
@eddiemaxon really? way to base your argument off of pure subjectivity and lack of reason. Learn what ska is before you try to argue with a ska musician. Oh, and uh, wow. Eddie Maxon? Nobody cares what your name is; stop trying to get your name out there you egotistic cretin. Get over yourself! (Not a lot of validity to those types of claims huh, asshole?)
@scuzzbuzzproductions well --and i dont have anything aganist you; dont get me wrong--, they really aren't ska. they are, indeed, alt. rock and reggae with some upbeat punk influences (musically; these guys principally aren't punk, though). Ska requires a very specific format which gives it the lilting, upbeat music that defines it as ska. These guys simply do not follow that format.
@scuzzbuzzproductions They're a modern day ska band (they keep true to the first wave format and do it better than most the pioneers and legends of the genre). You can clearly hear how they have the ska. The upstroke on every offbeat is essential for a song to be considered ska. As a result, most Third Wave "Ska" really isn't ska at all; it's punk or rock with a brass section. Although, some Third Wave Ska bands stay true to the roots like The Toasters, Bosstones, Slackers, etc.
@scuzzbuzzproductions ;) listen to some Skatalites and Dualers and you'll see what I'm talking about. again, nothing against you; I'm just trying to keep the true sense of the word 'Ska' alive before it turns into mindless subjectivity and quickly dies like punk did after Sex Pistols ruined it.
@PunkasFuck007 i've listen to this music for years. i've seen the toasters live. i listen to skatalites, the specials, desmond dekker, and whatever else you want me to listen to. i know this music. your so called knowledge has you blind sided and keeps you close minded. ska and rude boy lifestyle has a feeling and a way of life that shouldn't have such boundaries. pull your head out of your ass. as for my name, at least it is a name whether or not people care what it is.
@eddiemaxon So, you've listened to the basics; impressive. I don't care what you have listened to quite honestly; I've listened to about all of it, and it has nothing to do with how often you listen to it or what bands you know. This is something objective, knave. It's about the ska musical format. In order for something to even start to be considered ska music, a guitar played on the upstroke is required on every off beat. (i.e. oneANDtwoANDthreeANDfourAND). That's just basic ska rhythm guitar,
@eddiemaxon but I don't know why I'm wasting my breath on a ignorant fool like you who isn't a ska musician and probably does not have a true grasp on what constitutes rhythm. In addition, ska music typically contains a brass section of instruments and often an electric organ or keyboard. Although the drums in this song play on eighth notes featuring cross-stick playing and the bass guitar plays a walking bass line (secondary components of ska), the aforementioned key components are not met.
@eddiemaxon Thus, this is not ska. However, the key components of ska are replaced with different musical influences and B. Soundclash creates their own distinct sound with strong ska influence. But this surely is not ska music, just as obviously as Rhianna's song "Rude Boy" is not ska. This is getting ridiculous, honestly. Further, the urban youth of Jamaica were deemed rudeboys in the 1960s because they had to live outside the law to earn a living as the rural infrastructure of Jamaica
@eddiemaxon completely collapsed after Jamica gained its independence from the UK . Thus, you had to be a poor, urban Jamaican man that lived outside of the law to be a rude boy (thus, there are boundaries). Rudeboys started to idolize American gangsters (hence, Prince Buster's "Al Capone" and Skatalites "Guns of Navarone") and dress like them while mocking the rich with their suits and rude attitude (a technique mimicked by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones later). It wasn't until second wave ska
@eddiemaxon emerged in England that the true identity of the rude boy became muddled and non definitive. Rude boys were only first associated with ska music when ska groups tried to tell them to straighten their ways (hence, the background for Livingston's hit song "A Message to You, Rudy" that introduced the rude boy image to reggae skinheads (Trojans) in England). Since then, the term rudeboy has been used a lot to identify to an audience and relate a lifestyle to an audience. However, the
@eddiemaxon term can only be related to the audience, and the audience can not actually become a traditional rudeboy. B. Soundclash are not rude boys, and although they play some ska songs, this song is not ska. It is for a culmination of these reasons why people are getting pissed off on this page. And is especially because of ignorant people like you that think they know everything about ska while only holding a purely subjective, weak understanding of it. This isn't a dispute abt BS's talent
auctually, rude boy/rude girl goes all the way back to the roots of ska and reggae and the dance halls and stuff... the "hip" or "rude" kids on the island (who were usually dress up, which is were the white shirt black pants thing comes from...) would hang out at dancehalls and sounds systems and stuff and sometimes cause a little ruckus, and eventually the term stuck to people who like tha kind of music. the specials did bring about the checkers thing though...
that's cool I did not know that, I only knew that the specials used the term. I didn't actually know the history behind the term. You learn something new everyday!
cool man, im glad i could help... if you guys like ska and reggae stuff check out westbound train, there a band out of boston and i have never been let down by a live show by them ever. used to see them all the time in the bloomfeild avwe cafe days.
it's cool to see people getting on in these comment bits. loads of people just fight. sooo gay. just listened to westbound train. amazing, cheers mate!
eh, the rudeboy thing really exploded with the emergence of rocksteady.. the cool word for 'hip' back then was 'hep' which was originally used by american jazz fans who dressed the part, hepcats. rudeboys were like gangster hepcats who lived outside of the law.
Oh and I met them, they're big Clash fans (The Clash) also Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Umm if you like ska you can get The Agrolites and The Slackers, I highly recommend a high dosage of punk and reggae though lol you asked me to explain I hope I was helpful. Of one last band. The Dead 60's.
Just saw The Slackers 3 days ago. Lots of fun. The Aggrolites came last Monday, but it was out of my city (like 2 hour drive) so I couldn't go. But I love them. And Bedouin Soundclash are amazing. I'm hoping to see them with No Doubt, but I don't want to sit through Paramore. I listen to them and throw up a bit...
just 'alright'? are your ears blocked?! nah that's your personal opinion and you're entitled to it
i've been looking for this song for six months and finally found it, i've never been without a song for so long! someone had it on a mix CD labelled as damian marley, which didn't help when i googled for it...
sounds like a bunch of people dont know what 'ska' is and just want to sound like expertism is an area of subjective tendencies. well, it's not. nothing about this song is ska, except MAYBE the walking bass lines, but i'm going to have to say thats not so as they are too divergently punk to be ska and are too emphasized.
I completely agree with you there. if one wants to truly hear pure SKA, just take a look at one of the first band to play it, SKATALITES :) good post punkasf..007 ;-)

In my mind, its Funk/New wave reggae. If you don't like that, I don't give a fuck. But that's the genre I see it as.
