  • I really love my Mapex, but damn if PHX aren't the best drums I've ever heard. Too bad I'd need to take out a 2nd mortgage to afford a kit.

  • Exelent Yamaha The Best good drummer

  • Exelente!!!

  • Two points:

Notice how Wolfgang sits very high in relation to the drums and also looks like he's exerting very little effort. The two are related.

Second, the Yamaha PHX snare is the best I have ever heard.

    That is all.

  • one rack tom, 2 floor toms...just like my setup only recording custom

  • @sashazindel i ahree... but this kit does seem like its geard more for big band and jazz. I bet alot of old swing drummers blew a load for this one....I play a stage custom and love it.

  • @emaculate it sounds like the kit they used to record the family guy theme song.

  • adding to my comments below- bass shell is lower in volume than I like, but has very pure low fudamental note. All these shells record extemely well - a sound man's dream. Gigging drummers beware - these drums WEIGH A TON! Overall, very clean, loud, sensitve, rich, lush, open sounding shells. Overrated ? maybe, I love 'em, except for the kick, never head anything else like them. Remember, there is no PHX snare. FYI, the wait on ordering these drums is currently about 6 - 7 months. Play on!

  • I own these drums : 8x10, 9x12, 13x14, 16x20 in simple natural maple. Paid 3800 US for them. Toms are fantasic if you like loud, open sounding toms. Toms are super sensitive, very pure tone, super wide tuning range with astonishingly long sustain. Bass drum is a different story, I had a hard time finding heads that helped it to open up ( Evans EMAD 2 batter, Evans EQ1 resonant, both tuned very low. Not too impressed with the bass drum, it does have an extemely low fundamental note, not loud tho

  • Not to tear down your assessment of your kit, but a 20" bass drum was never loud enough for me. I've played slingerland, Yamaha maple custom, Gretsch, Tama. I love the feel of that size bass drum more than anything. Have you played it miked up yet ? If so, how'd it sound ? Thanks !!

  • @mlcoo17 have you tried a single ply bass drum batter head?

    it might work..???..???

  • @emaculate Yeah, I recently went from a Evans EMAD 2 to EMAD ( single ply ), it's an improvement. I would like update my comments on the bass shell and say that it's not so much that it isn't loud, it's that the note is a VERY pure fundamental note - an excellent quality but, there is less of the mid frequency " bloom" that one gets from a thin shell. The low end on these drums is ASTONISHING, as is the volume ( the toms are LOUD ), sustain, sensitivity and tuning range. Easy to tune as well

  • the only thing that these would sound good on is that peter gabriel song ...blah,blah air tonight.. blah- blah at least from the video or sizes im not an immediate fan but his cymbls nd snare are killin' bot then again to be fair i need to see them in person but what difference will that make video is like non forgiving recording.. tama birch bubinga is the next thing im after i think.

  • so overrated! ! I love Yamaha be there's no difference in sound. To be honest for £5000 drum kit I expect from it to make me a breakfast every morning and to drive itself for the gig .Definitely misses the "WOW!" factor! I play Yamaha Oak Custom; Put some great heads on, tune it properly and play it properly and you will save yourself £3000:)0

  • geil-lässig!!!

  • I wish they didn't have to change the cymbal tilter designs for the new Yamaha cymbal stands. Sure the feature is good bit the design is very ugly. I wish they woulda kept them classic lookin like these ones. Yamaha was one of the remaining companies that had their cymbal stands looking decent. Not anymore though. I'm so bummed about that.

  • to much crappy midi like music for a drum demo. but they sound like drums and all drums do.

  • i want it.....

  • who cares if they dont have a snare for the PHX line-the one he's playing sounds beautiful. so does the kick.

  • I'm all for it, Yamaha going 'vintage sound' - rounder edge profile (Hello Gretsch!). Its something that was lacking in the Yamaha line.

Yamaha needed a new flagship with the dated (and now collectable) Maple Customs discontinued. It can be argued, but 'most' of what's going on w/PHX is the edge profile. Sure wood composition has play, but does it justify cost? PHX is heavy, studio, or for those with a full time roadie.

One can 'recut' other Yamaha lines and get wicked depth/bottom.

  • I rubbed down the bearing edges on my floor toms just a tad with a scotch-brite pad and it was fat tone city. Just like anything else, drums can be very overpriced.

  • generatrix999,

I just got my PHX's a couple weeks ago and trust me, there is a very noticeable sound difference. They seem to sound better in my carpeted, slightly deader room than on some of my live gigs but they are without a doubt bigger, fuller and yet warmer than any kit I have ever played. I can tell they will record great. I agree that the sound in this video doesn't do the drums justice. If you can find a set to play on live, I can guarantee you will be blown away. Not Yamaha hype!

  • According to a Yamaha Rep buddy of mine they haven't been able to come up with a size/ply configuration that sounds good.

  • Snare isnt PHX line, there is no PHX series snare.-- Which make no marketing sense at all. People would be buying PHX snares b/f they put-out the cake for a set, or maybe Yamaha tested and came to the same conclusion I did below, not enough 'sound' differences.

  • After seeing Keith Carlock play these Yamaha PHX's live, I quickly realized there was no comparison to Yamaha Phoenix drums. Then again, his set up sounded a lot better than this guy's...

  • i really love the sound of this drum and this drummer has impeccable playing manners, but i really d'ont like the sound of the cymbals. way too dark sounding for me. i would play those styles of music with much brighter sounding cymbals even if its not the norm.

  • What are drums supposed to sound like?

Could be any bass drum the way its tuned, snare too.

    So, the toms... so what.

    Worth the money?

Shitty vid for demo of drums. Wolfgang's playing too much cymbals for a drum demo.

  • Snare isnt PHX line, there is no PHX series snare.

  • I want the PHX sooo bad but I bet you that exact kit is the same price as a car....

  • Definetly, a gorgeous kit. Sounds perfect. It´s similar to the pearl reference model because yamaha joins 3 different types of wood to the shells. How much it would cost?

  • lets put it this way

an 8x8 inch tom is $1400

  • sounds great with the coated heads

  • I love these drums!!!Thanks to Yamaha I had the pleasure of working with a set of these in Japan while teching for a very well known Yamaha endorsee........It was the perfect kit!
