I am 19 and this is the type of solution you might want to think about:
I live in Seattle (USA) and three yrs ago, Microsoft created a program designed for under-served high schoolers where we worked 2-3 hours a day after school 5 days a week for a year in various business groups, followed by a full time summer internship. Microsoft provided us with training, skill, experience, advice and a network. It pushed many minorities to college. Collaboration btw corporations/NGOs/schools is necessary!
@Waffleater1 The program was a collaboration between a local NGO who pushed to find internships and enhancing job opportunities for high schoolers and Microsoft. Everybody wins out:
- Microsoft: "hooked" us onto their products, community and culture, developed a pool of potential future employees, not expensive (minimum wage for us + HR specialist managing program)
Interns - Provided a fantastic resume/experience booster, gained skills, exposed us to a business, a network and a career.
Patronizing subject, not to mention the horribly arrogant and inept moderator.
