@holden1787 This was live in 2003. Brett had surgery on his nose at the end of the Something Like Human tour in 2002 - but the incident that made him need surgery happened in 1997 right before the band signed to a major label.

@holden1787 During a show right before the Sunburn record came out, Carl accidently rammed his guitar into Brett's face during a performance of the song "Ozone". Brett thought he could continue singing until he realized that it busted his mouth up and he couldn't even speak.

Most people think that's why his voice "changed", but his voice only changed due to vocal damage and fatigue from the Something like Human tour, when they played 6 shows a week for almost two years straight.

Well, I've listened to a bunch of live recordings before and after, and most striking is how in the last few years the instruments drown out his singing. A "cover-up," so to say? There's just so much more balance vocally and musically in the earlier stuff. Wondering if that is the result of the broken nose, or does it come playing with different musicians...or maybe both?

Brett isn't back with them, he made his own version of Fuel. As much as I would like to see Carl, Brett and the rest of the band get back together, I don't think it's ever gonna happen. Too much hate between all of them. It's a shame too, Carl is just as talented as Brett, only as a songwriter.

I saw them in Killington Vermont, just after Porcelain came out, in the winter, and let me tell you LIVE, this band as absolutely incredible. Amazing sound & and just a nice bunch of guys including the mixing board guy who let me listen with the headphones.

Bret autographed the Porcelain CD for me and we chatted for a couple minutes after the show. A night I wont ever forget.
