Denzel was bringing it to the new generation of today. People aren't that concerned anymore or can't relate about family life and racism in the world during !980's . James Earl was more involved in the struggles as an actor he brings that forth. Like 1970-Goodtimes versus 2011-Tyler Perry The Pain's LOL
Denzel is acting. Mr. Jones is living the part. I saw Denzel live, and he was fine (the production really belonged to Ms. Viola Davis), but he cannot touch Mr. Jones.
@blondmop92 And how wrong Denzel's is. JEJ makes Denzel look like a chump. Troy Maxson isn't able to use irony and subtly. He's a, pardon the expression, dumb n*****. Fenced in by being abused by his sharecropper father. Fenced in by getting to the freedom of the big city of Chicago, then being forced to live in a sticks and tar paper hut because he was uneducated and black. Fenced in by the color barrier in baseball. Fenced in by being black in 1957. Denzel just plays Alonzo Harris again.
All in all, both Denzel Washington and James Earl Jones had amazing renditions of the same character. The performances were just in different decades and a lot of social standards have changed in those 30 years. So honestly, you can't say one was better than the other, because both versions of the character are correct.
Both plays were set somewhere during the 1940s. James Earl Jones did this play in 1987. Parents were stricter back then and their kids kept their mouths shut and listened, keeping their thoughts to themselves. That's why Jones' character talked to his son like that. Parents were a lot more threatening back in those days, so Jones reflected that. In 2010, it's a lot more contemporary, so Denzel's character reflected this. His son rolling his eyes like that wouldn't have been accepted back in '87.
two completely different Troy's...im actually doing a run of this play at the moment in the Bay Area so it's interesting to see James's Troy, Denzel's Troy, and the Troy i'm working with. all of them play Troy differently, which i think is fantastic.
People saying that they think James Earl Jones did the same as Denzel have it completely backwards. James Earl originated the role and his own rendition was much more of a serious, stern and fierce and Denzel obviously took it as more of a comic role, at least for this scene. James had such a large build that his take on the character was much more intimidating while Denzel was more casual. James' voice also booms like a giant. Both are exceptional actors, but I think it belongs to James Earl.
I love how Denzel and Earl defined Troy as two different characters! This is why I love theater, because you can take the same exact lines and makes completley different characters!!!
@leejee88 dude your comment proves that you have no knowledge about acting. IDK what planet you are living on but wake the hell up and come back to earth!
@TigerBlood81 i have more knowledge of acting then you'll ever have ..u obviously are someone with selective hearing and sight ..You see and hear what you want.not the truth..The performances were just about the same..same intensity same type of character played in the same way ..
@leejee88 that's what you don't have asshole! I am an actor and I can clearly see the difference between how they both played the part. Denzel was more relaxed and funny vs James Earl Jones who was more stern and fierce. I'm not taking anything away from Denzel because he is a great actor but there is a big difference on how they both played the part! You obviously need to check your ears and eye sight and come back to planet earth!
look at james GUNZ hope I can be on that level at that age

Both do great performances as Troy, but I really think James Earl Jones just "fits" the character of Troy better.

It also makes a huge difference when the audience has to behave like a laugh track and laugh after every line Denzel says
