  • Fan death? An interesting theory. I've been sleeping with a fan on in my room practically every night (for "white noise" to help me sleep) since I was 12 y/o. I'm 43 now, and I'm still alive and kickin'!

  • I do not think flat chopsticks have traditional sigificance in Korea. It is just cheap to manafacture for single use purpose. I really enjoy all of your video. I am korean 43 years old

  • You must have fun. It's sounds excellent work in such a great career. Funny what the students mentioned was the description of coffee!

  • Hey, I thought the "nectar of the gods" was cognac....

  • i don't know about electric fans, but what i know about air conditioners is that those should be turn off at night because you can have facial paralysis or respiratory infections (if those are not cleaned monthly); One of 1,000 people can get facial paralysis if they leave the AC running at night and the air blows directly in the ppl's face..

i think the same happens with electric fans.. but from facial paralusys (toothaches, headaches) to death it's actually a long way

  • the myth isn't just about turning the fan on and closing the door, it's also said that the fan is set on high power, and set to blow wind DIRECTLY at the person's face. the weather being so hot, it's common for people to set the fan pretty high and directly at the face (obviously) the problem is that people fall asleep on accident thus resulting in death. i'm not sure about the science behind it but i do think it's more than a myth...

  • @ionlyspeakthetruth You obviously have no idea about science then..

  • never herd of fan death thanks for the tip, it might happen here 2 but ppl r not smart anough to think a fan did it

  • @shaun1912 Or rather too smart not to believe a wive's tale as retarded as fan death...

  • @joncarolyn hahah so true

  • (4) In contrast, Flat shape provides better sense of stability and prevents chopsticks from rolling down from table by any chance. Thank you for reading for my poor English writing.

  • Thanks so much!

  • (3) Then it might increase the chance of being make a mistake to let chopsticks rolls down when we are putting down on the table if its shape is round. Under the situation that even Munching sound and talking are not allowed during meal time, round shape chopsticks are not proper because it is easy to roll down from a table. Then it probably was not good happening for traditional Korean extremely calm meal atmosphere.

  • (2) "Being Quiet" is one of very important etiquette. We do usually put bowls, spoon, and chopsticks down on the table during the meal time. Unlike, other culture, it is not good manner to lift a rice bowl up to eat rice with chopsticks. We use spoon for rice. So that chopsticks have to be located on the table while we are using spoon for rice. "Here is the KEY point". Frequency of alternating of using between spoon and chopsticks are higher than other culture.

  • @jandhsw Koreans are far from quiet when they eat.

It sounds more like an animal than a person....

  • (1) [Flat shape provides better sense of stability] Thank you for sharing your experiences about Korea. I really enjoy watching it. When it comes to the shape of Korean chopstick, I have some idea since I am Korean. It is probably related to Korean table manner. Generally traditional Korean culture is strongly influenced by Confucianism, which highly values like a keeping an appearances. Therefore, Traditional Korean dining table manner is very strict.

  • the chopsticks being flat doesn't really have any cultural significance other than the fact that, before the industrialization, it would be blacksmith making metal chopsticks, it will be much easier to make them rather flat by banging them with a hammer than to make them round, which would require one to completely melt down the metal, pour it in a cast and such...

  • hmm..i don't know if there already was explanation about the chopsticks..but yes..the poison check thing was only applicable to kings or nobles way back who would use silver chopsticks and spoons..literally silverware, as someone has already mentioned...

  • The poison thing is with silver chopsticks. Kings ate with silver chopsticks, and when they would dip their chopsticks in poisoned food the chopsticks turned into different colors so that the king would be aware. Personally I haven't realized that koreans used flat chopsticks. I really have no idea why.

  • HAHAHA FAN DEATH!!!! LOL I am in Korea right now for vacation and my mom gets so mad when I go to sleep in my room with the window to the veranda and my door closed!! lolol

  • If you want to check the poison with your chopstick, use silver ones!

  • I think the poison check was actually an attribute of the metal chopstick. Poison won't soak into metal as it will wood.

  • Try explaining "walking around like a chicken with its head cut off". I had fun with that one. LOL!

I think the reason the Korean chopsticks are flat is because they are traditionally made from metal, while Japanese and Chinese chopsticks are traditionally made from wood, bamboo, etc.

  • Perhaps... I'll have to see if I can introduce that one soon.

  • One thing about the fan-myth,

it is believed that using fan when someone's sleeping makes his body temperature too low, as suppose to hypothermia.

I've watched several people reported to be death because of the fan, but well, I kind of don't believe it.

BTW, your videos are amazing i can't stop watching them

  • Thanks for the compliment. The hypothermia aspect might be plausible; however, the notion that fans can create a vacuum around your face and suck out the oxygen from the room seems a little more far fetched.

  • Mmmmmm....coffee!!! Good one. :)

  • OMG .. Your corrupting there minds ! the fruit of the gods ... where do you come up with this ... hehe

  • It was beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for stopping by!

  • Kona IS nectar of the gods! The only fan death I have actually heard of is John Lennon.

  • Oh...........

  • That classroom-switching-thing sounds great. Should keep teachers on their toes and must be quite an experience for the students as well :) The fan death thing was totally mindblowing, even more incredible that the MEDIA actually keeps this urban legend alive! Wow.

The coffee-bit made me laugh out loud ^_^ Soon you'll be the Starbucks poster boy in SK. Steve on billboards 20 stories high, oh man I bet you would look GREAT. :D

  • Yup.. you can even find news reports here on YT.

  • I feel comfortable using both round and flat chopsticks; but, I find it easier to hold kimchi and other vegetables, as well as noodles, with flat ones. How about you?

  • I can use them equally well.

  • Thanks 4 that update! Ur lessons gave me a big SMile!...Thanks 4 the SMile! Love&SMiles Tim

  • nectar of the gods indeed.

  • For sure.

  • I heard from my German teacher in high school that years ago Europeans thought that cold soda was hazardous to your health and even now you as a tourist have to specifically request ice in your drink and they look at you funny when you do. Even in a fast food resturant like mcdonalds they serve their soda warm. Ick.

  • Yeah...

  • Hmmmm, I wonder if it's just a manufacturing thing - easier to whittle flat things if you're doing it by hand, so maybe that's the way their machines were designed? Good question - I'll look forward to hearing the answer. And the coffee idiom = too funny. :)

  • Hopefully I can find an answer!

  • he man nice to see you doing very well!

    dirk

  • Thanks mate!

  • lol @ coffee

Very interesting. Have never heard of fan death. Wish I traveled more.

    Thank you. :)

  • Take some time and head out!

  • great video :) as for the "fan death," i know what you're talking about. my parents hate it when i leave the fan blowing at night. i personally love it: i can't fall asleep hot! i like it blowing right in my face, too :) but for the chopsticks...i dunno. at home we don't have too many of the flat variety - i don't like using them for the same reason you described. but i'll ask my parents about the significance of them the next time i see em :) glad you're doing well!

  • Thanks Michelle! Good to hear fro you. Hope school is going well!

  • i thought you were asking about flat chop sticks..

  • When was the last time you left a comment on my videos and i sub ya mate .....fuck me.

  • Interesting!

So I'm guessing these kids don't drink decaf?

And I think it's really cool how you're exploring your surroundings like that. My guess is that most people wouldn't be as adventurous.

  • Some are... some could care less. so sad.

  • How many gods do you have to juice to get a cup of coffee?

The 'fan death' mindset exists in Japan too.

  • Interesting.... we haven't found that info... but then again... I really didn't have time to research the topic much.

  • Hava gr8 wknd m8!
