Most of my "music listening" life. Every single day I want to enjoy music loud, I just get my headphones. Never complained about the sound here! Just be sure you have good sounding ones, thats all, All I do is IMAGINE Im blasting music with 2 pairs of huge speakers in a room, GOOD ENOUGH for me! And ultimately, virtually nobody hears my song to get annoyed.
I never did quite get why people won't use headphones? I mean, unlike monitors, the room sound proofing is no longer an issue, you can turn the up as much as you like without bothering anyone, and they're considerably cheaper. With some of the models out there, you can get sound ranges from 18Hz-35kHz. A much better choice than a studio monitor... so why not?
listen closely. if you have good ears theres a whistle thats constant on this video. i hear it. my ears are extra senstive though. i can hear that teen deterreant whistle thing also. most over 30 cant.
Using a quiet/small speaker closer to you works because it's energy isn't being spread as thin, so its sound is more focused (in a sense). You pointed out about headphones. Most headphones work in the range of between 10 to 1000 milliwatts (so 0.01 to 1 watts), yet, if you're wearing them, and listening at top volume, you can just as easily get hearing damage as you would listening to your 1000 watt floor standing speakers at maximum volume from 20 feet away.
If you want to know, the principle is based on the inverse square law.
If you have to speakers set to the same loudness, but one is twice as far away as the other, the further one away from you will be /four/ times quieter than the closer speaker.
The reason this happens is because the sound spreads, and the further away from the speaker, the more the sound has spread from its source (reducing the energy of the sound).
forgive my for this potentially stupid question, but if you're worried about annoying the neighbors, why don't you just use some high quality headphones?
because you need the headphones to mix - your not going to be able to mix anything with headphones on because you need to hear one track from the speakers and the other through the headphones
I have my jammo's wall hanging (from focus DIY) right next to the decks pointing at my head!!! Cuts down the need for volume huge amounts! specially after 7pm when the kids next door go to bed (F-ing little beggers) Plus makes monitoring so much better 10 fold! easy to beat match. Lovely
Cool idea about suspending the speakers and I didn't know about the benifits (less vibrations etc..). Weirdly enough I had to do that with my set-up due to lack space. I've got the powered Numarks M40-E, nice, cheap, compact and powerful enough for mixing at home. I used small cargo nets and hooked them onto a rail (pretty cool looks a bit like spidermans webbing). I'll put a video up of it in a day or so.
Wasn't that RCF in '2001: A space odyssey', those monkeys must really love bass
they are a pain in the ass, as they will kick in / stop the music and you then have dead silence for a min till the music comes back on. I hate them. : (
I agree, have been in a situation of being the live engineer for a band in a pub and you have the crowd calling for LOUDER and the limiter hitting the red and then it cuts out and you get filthy looks! Can't win either way !!
2 Questions: First: should we use studio equipment near-field speaker? - And what do you think about the jbl control 1? Second: in my favorite club here in Frankfurt, the speakers are right above the head of the dj. Not left, not right - directly over him/her. I do not think this is a matter of space.. the club is hugh! :-) Can you imagine why the monitors are not in front?
to be honest any speaker in close proximity is fine, jbl anr a good make! some dj's like the monitors to the left and some to the right. If above you the sound will be all around, perhaps giving a better monitor set up.
Professional recording studios call this "near field monitoring". There are some very high end famous brands of small monitor speakers like Genelec that sound amazing. If you really want to hear the detail in your mix, forget hifi speakers and go for active near field monitors.
I have found really hard to place my active monitors correctly as you explained there. One option besides lifting then up near your ears is to place them in a correct angle from your desk where your other gear is.
John, your idea is solid. But tell us how to get your insides and floors shaking from the bass w/o annoying the neighbors ;)
I have tinitus myself ;) As a result I tend to listen to the highs and mids low with the bass turned up on my stereo... Sometimes with ear plugs. the idea is to feel it in the gut, thats the important part.
hmmm, you should try suspend the rcf event 6000 lol. the reason why it sounds louder when you get close to the speaker is because the loudness is proportional to the distance, so if you are at half of the original distance you will hear the speaker 4 times louder.
Not really dj realted,\ but at 2:42, is that the Vestax cd player that you're selling? You got it all packed up and ready to ship! Good seeing that kind of eBay sellers.
haha i thought that as well :D i have some fairly large speakers, (14" bass cones, 1" compression tweeters) and they are on shoeboxes reinforced inside with blocks of polystyrene, which does a really good job of preventing it carrying through the house as much. I also have 2 smaller JPW near-field monitors which sound fantastic on their own :)

What about big speakers close to you and not turning them up so much...
I think they call this close monitoring...
Just don't turn up the volume so much, it's bad for your ears, and it makes alot of noise...

I guess the speakers being above the DJ firing straight down keeps the sound very contained to that one small area.
groovindj 4 years ago
It would keep the sound very direceted at the DJ and avoid the problem of him hearing a delayed sound from the mains for the dance floor
