My first listen to Stereolab was in '97 and, I don't know,...I can't quite describe it, it was like nothing else before or since. They are just supremely special, I adore Stereolab-period!
Hola!!! tremendo el concierto en Fillmore!! busco a una chica muy especial q conocí en el concierto del Fillmore en NYC y de la q no me pude despedir en condiciones...
My sentiments exactly. I wish I knew of their "Transient Random-Noise Bursts" Phase as it was happening. What was I listening to then? Around that time I think I was MC Hammer's "Too Legit to Quit". *shudders*
About the lyrics, the English lyrics are also "ugly" and "painful to listen to." But I think the groop would probably prefer them to be thought of as a means to an end.

For all the english-speaking fans of stereolab, I warn them that the lyrics of this song are quite stupid, and also, written in a very ugly french, very unpoetic, very painful to listen to...that's really a shame because the music is so beautiful!
I tend to disagree and find the word stupid inappropriate. I believe the depth of their philosophical position matches well with the simplicity of their lyrics. You would not hear a Zen master speak in words loaded with stylistic concerns. They would say, remind, puzzle and leave. I think anybody who reads a bit on the tensions between an objectivist Western worldview and an experiential Eastern philosophy would find these lyrics quite intelligent and down to earth.
one of the girls died, if im not mistaken, riding her bike in london, correct me if im wrong! excellent band. england needs more of this now, than haircut type disco shite ala crap gang of fours. boo
Excellent stuff. Stereolab might turn you off at first, but every song seems to go into a crazy unending crescendo towards the end. Great reward for the patient.
Et les dessins, c'est cocteau? ou bien c'est du n'importe quoi pour le clip? It looks familiar.
I was determined to have "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" again. Some bugger nicked my copy some years ago so it was a relief to find a new copy on eBay. Mary Hansen R.I.P. Mike S.

portishead or metric are similar but not that deep and old fashioned as stereolab, both are female voiced btw

laeticia looks like isabella roselini in this one, which is appropriate because the whole thing resembles the stage in "saddest music in the world".

And she also really looks like -- to me at least -- Maria Falconetti, or Renée Jeanne Falconetti for you purists...
Sadder even. And just too gorgeous.
