  • Ok, ,it is now over 2 years since you did that very nice job with nitro.......any cracking or checking of this finish these days ? Thanks for posting

  • @rhykko77 No cracking or checking yet...but It hasn't been exposed to any wide temperature variations. It is starting to get some normal playing wear like some very minor marks in the clear etc. which actually looks good because it was just too damn nice after the refin. It is actually looking better with age!

  • @markophonic Yes nitro finishes do look better with age. These days I have replaced nitro with KTM-9 or Target M6000 . Both are waterbased "lacquers"

The word lacquer means almost nothing these days. I am also very fond of Tru Oil finishing for the most natural look.

  • @rhykko77 I haven't tried any of the waterbased stuff but I've done some gun stocks and a couple Ukelele's with Tru Oil. .I'll have to look into the KTM-9 and Target M6000. Thanks!

  • "too much crap... lotta crap in here" Lol and its all a bunch of vintage guitars.

The finish came out nice though.

  • You want to get rid of some Crap? I got a BIG asshole and alot of toilette paper for those 'Crapy' goodies...

  • dude if you want i would love to take all that crap outta your room

  • that is identical finish to the slash afd guitar wow excellent job how long did it take you

  • That's looking pretty sweet! Good job.

  • ..."lot's of crap in here. Too much crap. Not enough room. Have agood day" ...lol

I know the feeling. BTW: Great job on the Faded. I've got the same thing (Tobacco SB) & needs exactly the same treatment but...too much crap...!

  • Hello. I have a faded and after two years, the stock finish came shiny, around the pickguard area where I rest my fingers and Its starting to lose some paint. So you know how can I do to take it back to the faded look ? Thanks!

  • holy shit it's even better!

  • Fantastic! I too have a Tobacco faded that's not too great. Did you also stain it with dark dye to bring out the flame more or you didn't have to? I'm about to refinish mine and I'm confused with that part..

    All the best,

  • @catthan I initially wet the entire surface with some water and wipe it off, this allows the stain to absorb evenly. Then I wiped on a mixture of stain that was slightly darker (tobacco stain) and wiped it off...I did this several times to help the curly flame maple "pop" out. Later i started to wipe on and off my vintage amber/tobacco stain mixture and added coats until I had a color I was satisfied with. Finished it off with some nitrocellulose laquer.

  • @markophonic

    Thank you very much!

1 more thing; by "wipe off" you mean sanding?

    Cheers

  • @markophonic , Sorry I bother you again. I have a faded and after two years, the stock finish came shiny, around the pickguard area where I rest my fingers and Its starting to lose some paint. So you know how can I do to take it back to the faded look ? Thanks!

  • bleach?

  • If you need to make some room in their I have plenty of wall space for any one or six of your sweet ass guitars. aaron

  • was that a Gretsch I saw hanging on the wall?

  • do you work for gibson or something? lol your room is infested with sgs and les pauls

  • If I remember correctly I think I wiped on 3-4 coats of an amber/tobacco stain mix...Just a drop or two of the tobacco stain into the amber. Then shot the clear over it.

  • how many coats of vintage amber did u use????

  • You did a real nice job shining your faded up. I bought an '05 Standard Faded with flamed top in mint condition. I want all you folks to shine your faded series because it's one less faded available on the market. To each his own, I guess. Then again, when you have the money to throw at 50 guitars, what's to care about if you fuck one up. Just kidding! I had to use the f-word because anything less wouldn't sound right. lol! Anyone here know if the faded really sounds better than gloss?

  • wow, that's alot of guitars, do you make them and sell them for a living? :o

  • show off LOL..but nice guitars

  • i was watching the the video with interest, and then you showed your room, with all the guitars, and i was like O.O!

  • Hey mark im getting a les paul here soon and the Rim-burst isnt so appealing to me and i also want to make the maple top pop, what exactly should i do or use to get the maple top to pop and to get the perfect "iced Tea' color to achieve the full tear drop for my les paul.

  • That looks excellent mate, well done!

  • 'theres too much crap in here'

theres like 5 vintage looking sg's, seceral telecasters, and 2 les pauls.

definetely not crap, im jealous !

  • Awesome job - to clarify, you did the Mother's ball first, then did the swirl remover by hand? Or you used the swirl remover with the ball? Just wondering - trying to polish a nitro finish myself - without damaging it.

  • too much crap.

  • great job man!!!!!

  • @nicolasrivera Thanks Man!

  • Hey bud, I don't see any "crap" in your guitar room, just loads of bitchin' axes, amps and a tube reverb! nice job on the refin..........

  • I'm thinking about getting one of those in Honeyburst

but I heard that they are no longer available is that true?

  • SIKao93...It was originally a Standard Faded model with a Tobacco Sunburst that was absolutely awful looking.

  • @markophonic

I refinished an '05 Standard Faded came out very nice but I "Hand Buffed" mine after the wet sanding. I like your approach with the Polishing Ball MUCH BETTER! Nice JOB! In fact Excellent!

  • very nice dude

in which finish did you buy it originally??

  • Yes it was wet sanded.

  • Did you wet sanded it???

  • Nice job; maybe you can give advice. I have a Gip LP Standard Faded and am going for the finished look of a VOS, kinda what you have here. I plan to shoot 3-4 cans of nitrocellulose gloss (Stew Mac) over the cleaned finish since its already sealed. Q1: Should I lightly sand it first, before applying the first coat of laquer?

Q2: should I sand and buff out the final coat? I prefer a semi-gloss to flat gloss

    look.

  • Thanks for the kind words...It actually looks much better in person!

  • Great job! You know, I'm glad you got a Faded and refinished it. The Faded's are decent Les Pauls with some great wood, but that finish they come with is like...UGGGGGGGGGGGGH! Absolutely disgusting to the touch! This looks as a Les Paul SHOULD look!

  • very nice I've seen some crap today this is not good job!

  • Great job ! Nice glossy !

  • wow!! NICE!!
