@VolumedMusicMan I gather that Kubek was referring to the A's current mood rather than their full season. At the time this had happened, Oakland had lost three straight one-run games to the Red Sox, including an 14-inning loss the night before and an 11-inning loss the night before that. This game was the first of a doubleheader. It may have been more their current state of mind rather than a condemnation on the whole season.
Jackson was replaced by Joggin George Hendrick (#25), who would later go on to be a force for the 1982 WS Champion STL Cardinals. Hendrick is now a coach for the Rays.
This is fun to watch but boy do I despise the "good old day"isms of some of these comments. You do realize that old timers back in '72 were complaining about salaries and similar aspects of the game that had changed from when they were young, right?
Love Gowdy and Kubek and Garigola...very informative broadcast teams on sun drench lazy Saturday afternoon...ah, yes. The good ole' days. Lets go A's! Lets go A's! Lets go A's!
Good stuff, I'm a Red Sox fan, but more important a baseball fan. Reggie had a big mouth, but I liked him because he backed it up with his bat. In 1978 I saw Tiant pitch in Fenway vs the Orioles- he had a complete game victory and they won 8 to 3.
El Tiante made a brilliant Comeback in 1972. He was almost written off as washed up earlier that year. The Sox lost that game 5-3. 4 weeks later he went on to pitch 4 straight shutouts. Putting the Bosox into a pennant race in September. He led the AL with a 1.91 ERA that year with a 15-6 record. This game was his longest outing yet of the season (7 innings). An early look of his career comeback. He went on to pitch another 10 years. Thanks for the video.
Always enjoyed Reggie, saw him homer with The A's and Yanks..The trouble with baseball now is to much of a good thing. To many playoff series and only night WS games.
Back when it was a game. Anyone else have their teacher bring the black and white TV into the classroom, provided you were quiet, so that you could watch the World Series? I know why they moved to night games but I miss the day WS games. I guess I am just old-skool...;-(
@amd77j oh, it always been a business and cheating and drugs (coke in the 80's, amphetamines in he 50's-70's) have always been there too, as have corked bats, doctored balls, unruly fans, strikes, and holdouts....read ur history, the more things change the more they stay the same
@amd77j Yep I used to come home from school and watch the A's World Series and the playoff games in the afternoon in the early 70's...what a great club and great time. Right when I got home the games came on around 4:30pm CST and it was the lil rascals and the ball game. No Batman in October...all baseball. LOL
I didn't realize Tiant remained motionless for so long while in "the stretch". I'd ask for time-out if a pitcher attempted such a stunt; surprised that a savy guy like Jackson didn't do that.
Why Oakland insists on Dodgers-inspired uniforms these days, I never know! THESE are the uniforms Oakland should wear-they're unique and link them to thier dynasty years. Ahem, it wouldn't hurt if today's A's had starting pitchers like Blue, Hlotzman and Hunter, either!
This clip gives you a glimpse of the pre 'Mr. October' Reggie Jackson. The power of the New York media machine gave him everything - especially when he produced the goods. I was pleased to see Cliff Lee turn down the Yankees rotation, which is something not a lot of ball players would refuse an agent in securing.
R. jackson missed the WS in '72, as he broke his leg in a play at the plate vs Tigers in the playoffs. A's still beat the Big Red Machine though. Sox always clobbered the A;s in those dynasty years for Oakland culminating in Bosox sweep of the A;s in 1975 playoffs.
You can still tune in a ballgame and see George Hendrick in action these days, though obviously not as a player. He's on Joe Maddon's Tampa Bay Rays' coaching staff. You'll see him coaching first when the Rays are batting.
1972....The year we first got American League baseball in the South when the Washington Senators moved to Arlington, TX to become the Rangers. Unfortunately, they didn't give Oakland any kind of race that year. The Rangers lost over 100 games and Oakland won the World Series.
Gives you an idea of the talent on that As team. Jackson gets thrown out and Hendricks takes his place. Some of the best baseball ever played and I got to see almost all of it in person!
@josiemax Montgomery was also the last MLB player to wear a soft cap at the plate while batting. The majors made it mandatory for batters to wear helmets in '71, though a grandfather rule allowed a player who came up before then and didn't wear a helmet to continue doing so. Montgomery retired in '79.
@DNSKansas in the 2nd game played this day (this clip was the afternoon portion of a day-night doubleheader), the Sox introduced the double-knit uniforms, with red & black sash belt. They wore the flannels in spring training 1973 before retiring them for good.
It come to prove how tenacious the A's were. They were so determined they took it out on eachother. Regardless 3 peat!

I don't get it. If tony kubek said oak was tired, they must've put on one hell of a last minute push. They were world champs in 72'.

@LarryRickenbacker The A's are now wearing their gold jerseys like the jerseys you see in the video.
But they wear it once in a awhile.
The best uniforms they wore last year were their old Philadelphia Athletics uniforms.
Blue hats with white pants and white shirts with the blue A's letter.
The A's are going back to Philadelphia this year to play the Phillies.
It would be so cool if they wore their Philadelphia A's road jerseys for the games.
That would turn a lot of heads!

This must be early in the season. The Red Sox are still wearing flannels. They switched to double-knits later in the year.
Love the umpire with his big chest protector.
