Not sure what the kendoka was doing here. The longsword guy's do and kote were wide open for the entire match, but he didn't go for them. Maybe the longsword guy didn't have armor there, and they agreed in advance not to strike those areas?
Hahah, never heard about duckwalk in medival fencing =) Iam fencing with the german longsword and it is important that you do not move to much and you dont do a lot othese funy cross steps =)
@Trollvolk you dont move much??? footwork is crucial with german longsword. theres nothing /i hate more than giving ground but a good side/triangle step gives you more angles. what manuals are you learning from???
i used to be pissed at kendo, because i hit my opponent 10 times to arm, head, one arm cuts and etc before he could pull a flimsy men , and what do i hear?! no that hit does not count ..u are not advanced enough to do them,u need a higher degree..although it was nice it does not count. that was a strong body cut but afterwars u did not make the "proper" kendo footing instead u did your unorthodox style..no that head cut does not count cus u lowered the blade after the hit and all kinds of shits..
@cseijif i agree kendo is a philosophy, an art, more than a sport and i respect kendoka, but im more a practical man, if i cut the man properly, he stays cut, doesnt matter if i move forward, or diagonally (to parry eventually and hit again). And european ways were not brute but had alot of technique behind them, different schools, masters, and styles: italian, spanish, portugese, german (the most known and effective).
@cseijif then again, ive seen kendoka at 3 or 4 dan..doing same moves as i did, one hand cuts and things. but those were seen as sparks of class and proficiency, everybody was like: waaaa. when i made those moves, not to imitate, God forbid, but it just felt so..sensei was like: wtf?!? are u doing?!?!!?? u dont have the degree yet, u arent even 1 dan, thats just wrong. i needed a way to express myself freely and not being severly judged for it, gather from techniques and then add my own will.
kendo practitioners are faster. but they are limited..they only attack straight head cuts or 45 degree sideways, sometimes arm cuts and rarely body... i practice kendo but it was way too restrictive for me. some said in those restrictions i find real freedom to express myself and define my style..good philosophy , i kinda agree with it but i prefer the longsword. Kendo its a mild simulation for katana usage..u dont use a katana like a shinai in real world..a LS sparring is more realistic
@mechupanlamonda depends upon the shinai really, the western longsword weighs about the same as a katana though so I don't really think it should matter that much. with Moon lancer though this longsword guy really isn't using any real wma style I've ever seen. He's much to static with his guards and doesn't seem to be trying for any single time strikes...
in every video of katana vs longsword, the katana is backing up. The katana is the best cutting blade ever made but as a fighting weapon it seems to lack the range and the versatility to be used in mutiple ways to strike. The longsword with it's length and double edge is so hard to beat.
The longsword style used ... uh, holding the sword in cross-side front, reminds me of some bolognese guards. But not really that either. Mixed style, gotta say.
Unlike a Japanese sword (kitana, ninjata, etc) where only the ONE part of the sword is dangerous (the SINGLE edge); A longsword is NOTHING BUT DANGEROUS.
I think the WSA guy is trained in rapier and dagger and is improvising a two handed style of swordplay based on this. He doesnt thrust or lunge as much as you'd expect though and towards the end at 4:40 he does a low Vom Tag!
Yeah, I don't know what this guy is doing. Its not English, its not German, its not Italian, and probably not Spanish.
In other words i don't think this is a very good western martial arts vs eastern martial arts video. I wish i could fight someone from a kendo background. I think it would be a fun experience. .
@MoonLancer Better try to find someone with a kenjutsu background. It would be historically more accurate. Kendo unfortunately is nowadays as close to historical japanese sword fighting as modern fencing is to that, a few hundred years ago.
@CoIdHeat Actually, it's even worse, as modern fencing is relatively similar to Italian smallsword fencing invented for private duels a few centuries back.
They should have put a Do and Men on the WSA guy so the Kendoka could make full power thrusts to the throat and Do cuts to the torso. Kendoka could be more agressive and his footwork is too wide ( the left is too far behind the right ). This gives up range.
If I may ask, what work is the fighter with the longsword using? It does not look like anything from the German manuscripts, and if it is Italian, forgive me since I am not very familiar with Fiore.
The footwork I recognize, but the guard looks like a mix of an off point Plow mixed with Longpoint.

The long sword guy has very freaky style. That's the way I would move when I'm about to rape someone.

@sevenrats The kendo sword in this video is very different from a katana sir.

@aclock2 either way, he's backing up. The longsword always seems to be superior.

@sevenrats Because it's made of wood, and it's longer.

-It's designed for both thrusting and slashing.
-You can cave in a skull with the pummel.
-You can punch with the hilt!
You don't see THAT action on Deadliest Warrior!
