  • Thank goodness for memory cards! Forget it if the internet system fails, just transfer and grade work through memory cards. I don't like this idea because of the material they are made of, but I gotta say, reusable plastic verses a bunch of barren forests is a plus.

  • one bigger (too big) Sun activity and we all will have to get back to good old paper, snail mail and handwriting ;)

  • I think a real problem with Schwarzeneggers idea is that not everybody will have access to either a computer or broadband internet.

This has the potential to severely limit access to education for those poor or disadvantage sections of the community that really need it.

  • Agreed. They already do that with some schools. Like in my college, we're expected to get our assignments off the internet. True, they do offer computers throughout the campus, but i know many schools don't, especially middle and grammar school, yet students there are also slowly becoming expected to have internet access, which is sometimes only offered at libraries, which is usually very slow with limited access. Thanks for your comment!

  • yes, but why do they need educating, i dont think mcdonalds have any educational requirements, and they will always need staff.

  • The greatest way to empower people is to provide them with an education. I understand that it has been shown, both historically and statisically, the best way to help an economy grow and prosper, and to provide for it's future citizens, is to educate them.

You may not think it, but McDonalds staff need education. They have to be able to read instructions and do simple maths. It seems like Schwarzeneggers ideas have the potential to puts those fundamentals of education at risk.

  • your hot :)

  • haha why thank you xD

  • lol - love you!!! (made a strong point in this video!) XD

  • Ah! thanks! I really appreciate it. :D

  • omg i spoke to a buck fan! rofll (woooo) big fan :P

  • Anytime! I like talking in the comments of videos and stuff :]

And thanks for watching both channels :D

  • Rock n' Roll era?????

Hey bitch... their is no such thing as a Rock n' Roll era.... cause an era can end... Rock n' Roll is living in the heart of every single rocker, nostalgic, metalhead, etc. It's not because the commercial radio play the same three song all day long that rock n roll is not still alive.... In fact their is a majority of person that like rock....

So screw you.... and as AC/DC said: Rock n' Roll aint gonna die!!!!!

  • OK. Don't call her a bitch. It only hurts your already poor argument. I hope you know you contradict yourself in this comment. Rock'n'Roll WAS an era. As you put, it may not be on the radio now but still lives in the hearts of all rockers. So does swing. And jazz. There was a time where that's all there was to listen to, and it has faded; an era ended. Just as Rockn'Roll is. No, it won't die. But it will fade. Don't be so closed minded, keep rock alive in your heart and that's all that matters

  • Hey cock suckers... i will call her a bitch if i want....

and for my contradiction... its because english is the third language that i have learn so i'm not perfect with it.

Rock will fade.... HAHAHAHA Rock is stronger than it ever was... All other kind of music is a trend Rock is a lifestyle... if you don't believe juste live and watch... in 50 years rock will be as alive as todayand so on for ever

  • Rock is stronger than it ever was and yet you still quote ACDC. . . hmmm.

For someone who has English as a third language, you sure now all the insult words, huh?I'm just telling you that it's not necessary to call her a bitch nor me a cock sucker. Seriously though, this video is about Textbooks. The era of rocknroll was simply an analogy. So either post something helpful or just shut up. I'm not wasting any more time on you cause you're just annoying, and frankly. Really rude.

  • ...hmm this section of you tube page is made to write comment about the video... so i don't know with wich authority you say that my comment aren't helpfull

Maybe they are not helpfull for you but what for every single other person on this planet....

  • First, let me say, if you keep this language up, i will block you.

An opinion is one thing, but rudeness, i will not tolerate.

Also, since english is your third language, an "era" is defined as "a period marked by distinctive character or reckoned from a fixed point or event"

Also, if you payed attention to what my point was, I never say rock and roll died, on the contrary i am basically stating that rock and roll is still alive and that i've never lived in a world without it.

  • TheMidnightSiege, thank you for your defense. I truly appreciate it.

  • um relax.... she's trying to make a point.

  • Wonderful argument. I, like you, am in that same area where I can spend more time on a computer than my parents, yet I also know what it is to go to a library and do research. I hope that books aren't terminated, because there is just something more... reassuring or comforting about the information I gather when walking through aisles and pulling books off a shelf, you know?

Are libraries going to be replaced with Online Cafes? I hope not; I get a lot of work done in my library.

    Again goodjob

  • valid arguement...but very long winded

  • damn it! Finnaly Arnold really belonged to Cyberdyne Sys. XD

PS: Miss you, little thing (hugs from Madrid)

  • anyone who votted for the man in the first place shouldent be allowed to vote.

  • Interesting video. plus you're a cutie

  • You forgot to say the most important thing of all - excessive amount of time spent in front of the cumputer screen results in headaches, migraines, nausea, dizziness and other symptoms due to radiation exposure which could lead to anything from brain tumors to cancer to lack of concentration to whatever. Books are neccessary either your gorvenror likes it or not.

  • EXCELLENT video. A clear communicator, you articulated your argument very well.

  • What would the government do about public primary and secondary schools though? Aren't they required to supply textbooks for every student? If they switch to online sources and some students still perfered the physical textbook, they would still be required to have enough for every student. I don't think it would save them much money to have both options.

  • 1) Fahrenheit 451. Same thing soon to come?

    2) Do you know what they are going to do with the unused books? I hope they give them to children who NEED them instead of something like, oh.. say... burning them.

    3) textbooks costs more than buying a laptop over time. One of my textbooks was over 80 dollars. ONE! that was just one of 15 others priced from 40 up. =/ it adds up fast.

    4) I agree with you on all points and you made a great video. (: (: (:

  • As a teacher in a low-income school, only 30% of my students have computers, and not all of those have internet access. I feel very frustrated that the "powers-that-be" don't seem to realize (don't care?) that many students would be left behind in a "paperless" world. They're already at a disadvantage when school newsletters, notices & grades are available only online. I can only imagine how they'll cope when textbooks are only online. We're leaving some of our best & brightest behind.

  • Fantastic response, very informative and you picked up on the issues I myself was thinking whilst watching Jazza's video, so obviously I liked it! =D Definitely agree. Nice one!

  • If websites go down, then the deadline to turn homework in gets pushed back... how is that a bad thing? You're cute little nerd you.

  • I really like your response... =)

  • Good argument. Computers have their ups and down; especially if used for hours in time - such as the air it omits isnt the same as that goes in. Took much of this computer air can also cause people to get sick, especially if many people use it in one area at a single time. So yeah, hard copies SHOULD still exist. One thing on textbook on the web, their should be a back up - such as in SD cards for lower rates and portability. People wont always be able to get access to the web when they need to.

  • Oh, and until you mentioned it, I never heard of the Cascade Effect only the Domino Effect.

  • Yes. Us inbetweeners would like both online and offline reading. They both have their positives and negatives but they balance each other, imo. Yes the world, or at least America, is moving toward an online world. You can read stories and novels on Google now! But I still prefer actually holding and reading a physical book. In the end the internet is just data, 1's and 0's. It exists, but at the same time it doesn't. If we relied solely on the internet, destroying a few servers could end us.

  • I love you Jen but I couldn't watch the whole vid sorry

  • If I had to do all my schoolwork on the internet, I wouldn't get anything done! Too many distractions.

In my case, a book would be far more useful because doesn't need electricity, they're durable, and they seem more reliable XD

I agree with the options between internet or textbook though I'm wondering if the textbook companies would be able to support themselves without the students' constant need for their books (they probably could stay afloat).

  • I have much to say about the given topic, but do not wish to write it all out. What I will say however, is that you should go out and buy a book called "Cradle to Cradle." Because, as one of the chapters is titled, "This book is not a tree." Yes. In fact, the book is a waterproof durabook. Its made out of plastic. And its extremely exciting to be able to say, "I have a plastic book!" (It incidentally is extremely easy on the eyes and has very well-designed type)

    Will you be @ 789?

  • your cat is ugly.

    Textbooks are poo.

    Internet is also poo.

That is all i have to say.

  • thumbs down for calling cat ugly.

  • Thank you for defending Nemo! :D

  • ooo Beth, you are in TROUBLE. I can't protect you from the thumbs down if you're going to be like this. tisk tisk.

  • I'm sorry. lol. I love your cats hehe.

  • omg i completely agree with you.... remind me when i next see you... we need to have a talk about this!!!

  • perhaps books shouldnt be on the internet but on a disc or a micro sd card or some type of generic card that they can return to the library once their done using the information from it

  • Reading from Paper Textbooks is MUCH MUCH Better that reading frim artificial digital paper/textbooks,

  • Excellent video! I don't like reading a lot off computer screens either. I much prefer having a physical book in my hands.

I agree that the option of physical and digital textbooks is best so people can use what they prefer.

Great point about site crashes and technical problems. I hadn't thought about that after watching Jazza's video, but yeah, that would be a huge mess if people lost access to online material. They would have to be secondary/back-up ways to get it.

  • In regards to the needing a backup in case the net goes down, all coursework and texts could be distributed on CD, that does not require the internet to access them. This removes the paper aspect of the texts, and means you can access your stuff without the internet, go online to post, or print out if necessary. Though I'm out of touch, finished school a while ago they probably already do something like this, but to me its a good idea!

  • First of all, it's odd seeing your face in the daylight.. i half-expected it to grow glittery like Edward from Twilight..

((I scared myself with that reference))

And secondly, I read one book on the internet.. I lost my spot so many times, everything was too bright, and my head ached after the first hour.. Although it's a good idea to get transfer textbooks into computers, I still like having actual printed ink in front of me.. Much less stressful.

  • When I took my finals during the last two semesters, all of the actual exams were administered by the professor in either the regular classroom or a lecture hall.

And I've had to submit various papers to sites like Turn It In. These sites usually work, but when they don't, it creates headaches for the teachers and students alike. Sure, it's convenient, easy, and saves paper, but it lacks the ability to give specific feedback. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  • I agree that it's immensely more complex to have a digital book than a paper one (kinda like land lines vs cell phones), but in a ideal world there wouldn't be a central server that goes down, because there would be copies of the book all over the net. knowledge should be free anywhere. authentication is a technical detail, we can work it out (some kind of system where you download the book and you can make sure that it's unaltered)

  • think about the "humanitarian" aspect of it. with a paper book, if you want to share that knowledge with someone, you have to print another copy, and hand-deliver it to that person on the other side of the planet, just for that person. it's expensive and inconvenient. digitally, the book is everywhere in an instant, it can be searched, spoken (text-to-speech software for the blind), edited, etc.

  • You see, I really don't like the idea of electronic text books, books, etc. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. I suppose it's logical for college students that have dozens of super thick books to load around, but I'm still more comfortable with the idea of a physical copy with pages to flip.

However, we all know that as time goes by people aren't going to be satisfied with the same ole same ole. Within the next ten years there probably won't be much of an actual "newspaper" to hold anymore

  • Exactly. Especially with the dawn of "electronic paper", Which i don't know much about, but do know is going to be something big.

But i agree with you, i really just like sitting with a physical book.

Even a text book or photo copies.

I'm more comfortable with pages than a screen.

  • i agree with you about feeling more comfortable with physical books :)

in my town it is hard to get a book that is younger than a year, so mostly i have to read them online and the problem after it is that not only my head hurts but sometimes i'm even having hallucinations.... therefore i don't think the removal of actual textbooks would be that great for young students :/ the new generation already has more health (and other) problems than needed...

  • Exactly

  • I totally agree with your thoughts, we should have both: text book and also online books.

I wouldn't be able to stand computer for so much time, besides it's already damaging my eyes x.x

  • Oh & great video too. Very clear. x

  • Oh! Thank you! :D

  • due to tech fail I may have just lost my art GCSE. Hard copies are vital & i dont want paperless. I love books. It feels so much more real as a page. I like the smell of them. That comes frm a heavy internet user. I like being able to pull a book out of my bag wherever I am & read. . I would hate to think of a generation growing up without books & skipping straight to the computer. Internet resources for students are fantastically useful if setup & used properly, but It would be such a loss. x

  • Oh man...i hope you didn't lose your project... but I agree. Hard copies are vital just in general. I love pages and the crack of a new book binding. Clicking a right arrow will never replace a page for me.

If you want to flip to a certain part of the book and skim, that would be insanely difficult on the internet. You can't gauge where you were. Book marks would be useless. No dog-ear'd pages. No writing in the margins...*sigh*

Internet is convenient, but i like the novelty of books.

  • Honestly, one of the best responses I have ever had. Much more concise and well rounded than my video. I look forward to seeing you respond to me in the future. :)

  • Honored and flattered and since I did no research for my own video, but merely gleened information from yours and created a response, it is impossible for mine to be compared to yours at all, but i will take that compliment because it's freaking awesome. I will definitely be responding in the future. You have some of the most interesting and informative videos i've ever seen on youtube and, as such, I am beyond glad that you enjoyed my response. :D

  • great points. You may or not know but they are out to make medical records/claims going to be all computerized

  • GAHH...That sounds dangerous.

Internet wise, that's identity theft waiting in the wings.

Computer wise, if one thing were to crash, or if there was an electrical outage, everything would be lost or useless. Hospitals would be in chaos.

i does not like this paperless future...

  • well just think of the generational divide in only a short time. Where if we had a report, our sources were made of paper. If we needed to contact someone. We had to write a letter. Thank you cards, etc

  • I know. That's one thing i do like about this switch over: documentation transportation can be instantaneous (like school work and research). But it also takes away from the personal points. Like thank you cards vs emails.

Cards have a personal touch with design, handwriting, signatures. It can be a keep sake.

Whist emails, even e-cards, are usually lost in inboxes or deleted.

  • I am very much against the transfer of text books from paper to electronic. I can handle conversations or news articles on my computer just fine. In fact, sometimes i prefer them. But when I am reading long pages (like school stuff or novels) I need to be able to hold it. I just feel like the more dependent on technology we are, the more heartless we become. I see no soul in reading books online. There's not as much passion in staring at a screen as there is reading the words from paper.

  • F*** YOU YOUTUBE AND YOUR DELETING MY LONG AND THOUGHT OUT COMMENT.

    Just saying...

  • While I am very much against the DEHEARTIFICATION of the world through use of technology over paper, It is sadly where we are heading. But the problem is, we arent ready for it. The internet does have problems and it is subject to crashing and not working. But there's also the computers themselves that are still having issues. We are still suffering from computer crashes and memory lose. We havent fixed the problems we have with these machines and we're ready to put all our dependency upon them?

  • Your last point: Exactly. I can delete my entire computer in a few keystrokes, or just drop it too hard on the table. Even if i were to make back up files, i can (and have) sit on the disk and break it. Destroying a book takes time and a decisive effort, and even then, pages could be salvaged, or copies could have been created that take the same amount of effort to destroy. And yes, i must agree, i just love sitting and reading sometimes. something about the pages...

  • Great video! I completely agree. Hardcopy backups are a good idea. It's just a matter of keeping everything in print.

And also, making information available for download.

Maybe digital books that you buy once, and then can download free updates for.

Then every one could just get some kind of cheap kindle or something...

Also, don't forget about "that thing".

  • I like the idea of updatable books. Like software updates. But i doubt they'd make cheap ones for convenience. Profit is profit. The kindles shall be like iPods with new versions out every year for the holidays. But then, are Kindles biodegradable? True, we may be saving trees, but in the long run, we might just be destroying the ecosystems with some extra pounds of plastic. At the end of the world, all that shall be left of us is cell phones, diapers, Styrofoam, and Kindles!

  • Oh, yeah. I didn't even think of that. There is already far to much plastic... And I'm sure they would still charge headspinning amounts of money. *sigh** If only they where less concerned about money and more about people...

  • That last line explains it all. hahah

and i'm working on "that thing" right now.

  • Haha yeah.

    Also

    YAY! :D

  • 1) I think you meant the Domino effect.. but then again both analogies work but I think dominos gets the point across better lol

    2) I think paperless is the way to just because of the environmental reason that it it would significantly reduce deforestation, but of course trees will still be cut down for other uses because we're a destructive race and we use lumber for other things. I think the reason why your not totally on board with the paperless thing is because the Internet is still very

  • young, and is nowhere near perfection (i.e. the reason we have ID theft online, scams, website malfunctions, viruses, and what have you). The Terminator has the right idea, but because the Internet is still in a "larva form" I think he's timing is a little off. He can eliminate textbooks, but there will be students who dont have access to the Internet or comp, so there is still the necessity for hard copies. All in all though, I'm all for the technological revolution.

  • I agree with the technological revolution. I know it's going that way, even if i still feel a book is meant to be sat with in a nice chair by a window or lamp with a cup of something warm in hand. I just think throwing everything to the internet is a bit of a terrifying thought. I can erase my whole computer with a few keystrokes. It would take time and effort to destroy a book with as much information. Even burning takes a decisive action, while internet could just blow itself up one day.

  • And i have to agree that the internet is way too young to be able to handle this type of paper to screen conversion. Considering how new the internet truly is, people are becoming way too dependent on it much too fast. For a governor whose movie career was based on the idea of technology with too much power, this lesson does not seem learned.
