This wasn't a bad adaptation of the Popeye cartoons and comic books for its time. At least they had tried to keep true to the characters. At least the make-up that was used on the actors in this movie was close to the actual characters in the Popeye cartoons.

god this Movie brings back alot of great memories, I never will understand why some people hate this Movie, Robin williams and the whole cast were fantastic at bring this character's story to life. I always love this film, My sister and Mother and I saw this when it came out in 1980, and we saw it eight times..and My sister is No longer with us...so this movie is dear to my heart. I love good movies, black and whites most of all; but if there's a shread of a musical or correographed dance sequence I kill that shit when it starts. However, with this film I was able to tolerate it and in content of certain scenes I found myself appreciating it. It is allowing me to understand the characters, their identity, and their society in a way I could not as I child watching a cartoon I liked so much. Big UPs to Popeye The Sailorman!

A movie doesn't have to be perfect for a kid to love it. Nobody said this one was perfect - but it was criminally underrated - and, boy, did I love it.

What Altman & co. got right is the highly tactile sense of the physical. You don't so much watch this film as get grappled by it.

Its a strange movie that I love because I saw it in the theater, but looking at it now.. you can see Hollywood mixed allot of genre's that were popular... It's kinda like 1978's Grease & Superman. You have the musical because they were popular and Superman of taking a "kid thing" seriously.

I don't know why a lot of people thought this was a failure back in the day. It made way over the budget ands its a very good film. Very funny and even somewhat sad at times.

I hope a special edition is made someday I'd like to see cuts and or deleted parts if there are any I bet some good out takes with Robin were there! :)
