I saw that performance live a few times and the really amazing thing was the stamina and sheer bloody determination that was required by Leigh and Nicola. It never shocked me, can't imagine why it would shock anyone. But where are the people putting in ANY effort now??
Most times that Leigh went out dressed he was inside a costume that he couldn't go to the toilet in...that was it for the night! That's dedication to your art. Sheer fucking genius.
@TheLuddgang My wife & I also saw the act a couple of times live - and you're spot on with everything you say. It was absolutely amazing and took incredible determination and dedication. We both cried when he died. Genius indeed.
The funny thing, is how he was not insulting his audience, they appreciated him at first, but then he got into talking about his own experiences likely "in general" with pple's reactions to him (other/past "audiences"), the interviewer than pitched it "TO" the audience as tho it was about "them" and they turned on him i think as a result
i find it darkly sad how the audience CHOSE to perceive Leigh's show as "degrading" ... cos i don't get that from it at all ... i feel quite the opposite actually; & I have given birth 3 times so far this life ... i remember that song by the Beattles playing at my cousin's wedding but there was no Leigh Bowery there... something has been missing for me about life all along & I didn't know what it was till seeing footage of Leigh Bowery

It left me both awed by his creativity and inspired by his bravery. I want to inject dreary boring Houston with a little of his spirit.
