  • I have been feeling dizzy and lightheaded =( I am drinking tons of water and the funny thing is I am at 30 carbs per day !! I want to get to 20 but have been worried about passing out ~ any ideas of how to avoid the dizzy feeling?

  • @pammyglo1 The water helps, but is only half the equation to get you hydrated. In order for the water to be absorbed, you need to also take in sodium and potassium (electrolytes). That will do wonders for the hypotension and the dizziness. For potassium, a great way to take that in is with LiteSalt salt substitute. The new book recommends drinking 1-2 cups of chicken broth to help with the electrolytes.

  • @bowulf thanks for the info I will def. get some chicken broth and give it a try ! and by the way yea for me I only had 21 carbs today and feel full and don't feel any cravings :)

  • @pammyglo1 That is a sign of a good day. :-)

  • How do I get rid of the headache? Excedrin used to work for any headache but it doesn't for this. What can I do go get rid of it. Also, no energy, very very hard to climb stairs. Feel I'm about to pass out. Help!!!

  • @pyunique You are likely dehydrated and electrolyte depleted at the moment. I would suggest drinking more water if you aren't getting your 64 oz in, and getting some additional sodium and potassium in your diet. (Salt and a salt substitute (like LiteSalt) work great for this.) A recommendation in the new book is to drink 2 cups of chicken broth per day to help with this electrolyte depletion too.

  • I started the Atkins diet 4 days ago and I am extremely hungry. I eat only meat and it does not seem to fill me up or satisfy my hunger. Is this normal?

  • @bigcat02 Well eating only meat is not Atkins, so I would encourage you to eat your veggie (3 cups per day), but you may need to eat higher fat meat than say boneless skinless chicken breasts. This is not a meat only diet.

  • I'm getting that in an off again, on again thing.

Can this happen after 5 days of exercise? I was exercising my lower body, and it was hard to lift my legs afterward.

  • @mritchie1 Yes. It is usually due to low electrolytes - especially sodium and potassium. You can replace both with an electrolyte drink like Powerade Zero (no carbs) or simply add a bit more salt and salt substitute (Morton LiteSalt) to your diet.

  • I was addicted to sugar, but as I started the Atkins diet...my cravings just disappeared completely, without a second thought! I also started drinking water and got to actually like it. The only thing I noticed, was the strange taste in my mouth, especially in the morning, or when I needed to eat. That was it.

I wasnt even taking it real serious, just trying out a different diet, have played around with it, getting to recognize when im in ketosis etc. and I feel so stable on Atkins! Worth a try!!!

  • @the7thwreck I agree, and the ketosis breath is just one of those temporary side effects that let you know you are on the right track. Kudos to getting your cravings under control, and thanks for providing your Atkins story.

  • I've been on Atkins for 2 weeks. I know I've been in ketosis but feel I shouldve lost more then a couple pds. I realized that sunflower seeds, diet soda and coffee was stalling me. So now I gotta start all over. The scale hasnt moved much but I still see a lil difference in clothes. Hopefully I'll start seeing a difference now that I'm stopping those 3 things.

  • hello, I need ur help in 2 questions please..in the induction phase and this 20gm carbs ..should we count the carbs in the protien as well?? I mean when we eat chicken u can c it has some carbs in it and the same applies for meat and am not talking about processed food am talking about normal chicken and beef cooked at home..second question am I allowed to elongate this induction period as much as i can?? 2 months for example...thanks in advance

  • @aswelam You count the carbs from all sources into the total 20 net carbs per day. Processed meats certainly can have sizeable carbs in them, and you need to be careful which ones you pick especially on Induction. As for raw chicken or beef, they might have neglible carbs (well less than .3g per serving), but eggs on the other hand -- good protein source with .6g per egg. You need to count those as well. Certainly anything you add in the making- spices, cheese, vegetables -need to be counted.

  • @aswelam You can stay on Induction for a long time. I was on it for essentially a year, but that is neither prescriptive or necessarily advised for anyone else. I have a video posted here called "how long should I do Induction?" that more fully answers this question.

  • I did it for like 4 days and felt like I was dying, stomach pains, nausea and just feeling unwell. I need milk, cereal and FRUITS.

What kind of diet tells you no fruit that is just insane. Maybe it works but it's definantly not long term. I hardly ate bread before I went on it but on the 4th day I craved bread like never before so it's not exactly easy diet.

  • @pcangeldust You actually don't need any of that. Fats and proteins are essential as your body can't produce all of the ones you need. It can produce energy via other ways.

As for fruits, there are fruits on all phases of the diets -- cucumbers, pumpkin, tomatoes are all fruits. 7 years later and it is definitely long term for me. Mind you not all phases are Induction, but honestly this is the easiest diet I have ever done.

  • @bowulf I am glad it has worked for you and you are an inspiration to all of us but for me it just doesn't feel like I can do it for the rest of my life.

Fruits like apples and oranges are good for you I believe they are much healthier than a pack of splenda (artificial sweetners).

I never been a big fruit eater but restricting them just makes me want them more and also atkins makes you feel weak, my bones hurt which I never experienced in my life. Something is missing from this diet...

  • @pcangeldust But again fruits like apples and oranges are only limited during the first phase, which only has to last 14 days. After that you figure out what is acceptable for you. You figure out your CCLL, which is the limit of carbs you can eat and lose.

Not everyone has to go through this minimalist period. If you only have 20-30 pounds to lose, perhaps Atkins for Life approach would work better. However for someone who hit rock bottom, I needed to rediscover food and what works for them.

  • @pcangeldust As for the bones hurting, all that is discussed in this book. Many people as they lose weight get out of whack with their electrolytes and need to replenish them as this video points out. Potassium is a key one. Vegans have the same problem with their diets. As one makes a radical change, it takes a bit for the body to recognize and acclimate to the change.

As for the Splenda vs. fruit false dichotomy, no one says you have to eat Splenda, and in fact they are limited on the diet.

  • @bowulf My point was splenda is allowed yet fruit which is alot more beneficial are not allowed excluding tomatos, cucumber and pumpkin. How will an apple, orange or plum make you fatter. I agree with low carb diets but too low is not good maybe at first to adjust the body but on atkins even after induction stage, the consumption of fruits are still very restricted.

  • @pcangeldust "are still very restricted" Based upon what? How many apples or oranges do you need to eat in one day? Is 5 enough? How about 10? Many people once they hit the latter phases and maintenance eat approximately 60-125g of net carbs per day. You can eat as many as your body allows. Does one need to eat more 5 or 10 apples per day?

Perhaps I am missing the hardship, but that's ok. You can lose your weight however works for you. I have no problem with that.

  • @pcangeldust I on the other hand have had 7 of the best years of my life. I have had 7 annual physicals were my doctor uses me and my blood work as what works. My cholesterol has dropped 50 points. My heart risk factors are nil, and the thing that was likely going to kill me is gone -- sleep apnea. I also now have the energy to run marathons and do things my 20-year old self would never have dreamed of doing.

So I do believe I have conclusive proof that Atkins is indeed healthiest way for me.

  • @pcangeldust As for the question how will an orange or a plum make you fatter, it's quite simple. Mess with someone who insulin resistant blood sugar, and a number of bad things happen. Research Metabolic Syndrome X. Just because you happen to not be insulin resistant does not mean everyone is not.

  • @bowulf Do you have fruit as part of your diet? Excluding the above mentioned.

  • @pcangeldust Sure, I have berries (Strawberries and blueberries) quite often and melons occassionally. Though I question the "need" for fruit as opposed to vegetables. In the past, people only had fruits when they were ripened locally and were very seasonal. Most of one's phyto-nutrients came from vegetables, which are more nutritionally dense than fruits are. Fruits typically contain excessive sugar to obtain the same amount of vitamins.

  • No doubt. Turnip greens and Spinach seem to fit the bill with an occasional salad.

  • FYI - I started the Atkins at 317 poiunds and I'm 303.5 as of this morning. I've found your videos very helpful, educational, and informative.

  • Good stuff. I've been eating almost pure protein (steak/beef/chicken/pork) for the past 9 days now, drinking more water every single day (up to 10 16oz bottles as of yesterday) and exercising by walking in 30 minute sessions in my neighborhood 1-3 times a day as my schedule permits. I'm down 13.5 pounds so far and I've only experienced a very mild headache if that so far. I have "cheated" a little by drinking 1-2 cups of coffee every couple of days but with sweet/low and creamer. It's working

  • @DarbyWeaver Just a small reminder that this is not just an all meat diet. Work to getting your 2-3 cups of veggies in per day even if just as a highlight to your meat, like my chicken cordon bleu recipe here. Other than that small nit, I think you are doing excellent. Keep up the phenomenal work, and congratulations on the weight loss!

Thanks for watching and another great example of the success that is possible.

  • Thankyou so much for all your videos,, i just started Atkins Diet 3 days ago,, however, i had really bad stomachache ytd becuz i ate so much meat,,, i went back to normal diet today to settle down my stomach,,, i wonder if i need to start the induction phase again for 14 days ? sorry for my poor english and thanks for answering my questions :)

  • Thank you so much for bringing this to light. I really thought that it was something really wrong with me or I was doing something wrong

  • @zoelynn69 Always glad to share with others. You are definitely not weird or suffering alone. You might try to consume a few more electrolytes like sodium or potassium.

  • Kent, The headaches I have right now suck...Acetaminophen, helps...trying to drink enough water too...

  • @TheOnlyAlexandra You might also try increasing your sodium intake -- many people get dehydrated or low on electrolytes, and get headaches because of it.

  • @bowulf thanks for the quick reply. That's good wisdom. I think the dizziness was a symptom of insufficient potassium. I hope you don't mind me asking you questions (I'm sure you receive tons), but I have another. How many minutes of exercise did you get in when you first started. I know that you should try for 30 minutes, but after 10-12 minutes I feel like I ready to give up and go meet Jesus, lol. How long did it take you to work up to the recommended amount of time? Thanks again!

  • @disneyfan86 I didn't exercise at all for a month after starting. Your body isn't acclimated to burning fat for fuel until week 2 or 3, so your performance will be likely horrible. By week 5 or 6 I was doing 15 minutes walking at 400+ pounds, and probably within 2 months I was slowly building up to 20-30 minutes. I had pretty bad shin splints when I first started too.

  • Bowulf, I have a question for ya. I started the atkins diet 4 days ago. Like you I have a large amount of weight to loose (187 lbs for me). I was wondering how long you stayed on the Induction phase? I read that you could stay on it basically as long as you need to, but since our cases are similar I figured I'd ask your wisdom on that. I have been having a few dizzy spells, but I'll increase my water intake and see if that helps! Thanks for your videos and testimony! It's definitely inspiring!

  • @disneyfan86 I have video on this topic, so be sure to view that one (How long should I do Induction) too. I did Induction on and off for nearly a year with a few excursions when things like strawberries were in season. There is a checklist for how to decide to stay in Extended Induction or not. As for the dizzy spells, I would look at the electrolyte intake -- like sodium and potassium. That is usually the cause of these periods of low blood pressure.

  • People talk about stalling on Atkins. Is this something caused by low carbing, or is it just something that happens on all diets?

  • @Lightf00t1 I think the stall issue is often over-blown and misused. I do have a number of stall videos, but remember a stall is only when you haven't lost weight AND inches in 4 weeks. Many people start panicking when they go 1-2 weeks without a weight loss. The body will go through plateaus as you lose weight and it has to readjust to different body shapes.

All weight loss plans can have the problem. Low carb is not unique in this.

  • @bowulf

What are your goals? Have you achieved a six pack on Atkins yet?

  • @Lightf00t1 My goal was to lose 204 pounds and get down to 225, rejoin the military, and be fit. All of which I have done and been at goal for 6 years. I have added additional goals in the meantime, like run a marathon, pass my APFT at levels of an 18 year old, and do P90x. I have achieved those two.

Re: 6 pack abs -- without surgery to repair the remaining loose skin from losing over 200 pounds, I'll never have perfect abs. I do have abs that can do 200 situps

  • @bowulf

Well done, that's some achievement. Luckily I don't have to lose that much. I'm between 14 and 14 1/2 stone and 6ft 2, so not obese, but I'm a bit flabby and am nowhere near the weight I feel good at.

I'm thinking of trying Atkins because--although at the end of the day it's calories (IMO) that count--I struggle to stick to diets and end up bingeing. I thought that a high protein high fat diet might leave me feeling more satisfied. What do you think?

  • @Lightf00t1 Well Atkins is not high protein as protein can convert into glucose and affect blood glucose levels. I would urge making sure you know the rules and what is allowed and what isn't. I say that only because what the media promotes as Atkins is often not accurate.

I think Atkins works well for all groups as i have seen success for those with 20 pounds to lose as those with 200 obviously. I have my own opinion on Calories and have made a video on that topic.

  • ever notice none of these guys look like marathoners or bikers? lol

  • @Attakijing Let's see I just ran a marathon 4 weeks ago, when's the last time you ran one?

I beginning to notice your comments show lots of bias and little basis in fact.

  • @Kissiq1618 lol

  • @Kissiq1618 lol hows it going now, its my second day and my body is really taking a hit..

  • @Leeanne4debate Well the point to any long term weight loss is learning how to keep it off long term. There is a maintenance phase of Atkins. Did you go back to eating gallons of ice cream or fast food? Probably not... That's why you kept off the weight. I have stuck to Atkins 7 years later, and still at goal.

You are sadly mistaken that starting a raw diet has no deleterious side effects. I read multiple reports of diarrhea and discomfort the first few days.

  • Comment removed

  • @Leeanne4debate So if there was no flu and people gradually went into Induction, that would be better? If the 2-4 days of dealing with the negative effects of ketosis deters you from Atkins, you are obviously at a different point in your life than I was.

For me, the opposite was true. I lost at 4 pounds a week and lost 200 pounds. My athletic performance and marathon running has only blossomed since starting Atkins.

PS - many people on Atkins report much healthier skin too.

  • If you are going to argue at least know what you are arguing against. This is not a high fat high protein diet. This is high fat moderate (less than the daily USDA recommended amount per day) low carb diet.

As for the epidemiological China study and C. Campbell's biased report on it, it also showed that people who drink and smoke have a lower cancer risk. It also showed wheat consumption to to be highest determinant of cancer risk. Epidemiological studies suck. They can't show causality.

  • Comment removed

  • @Leeanne4debate "As for the people drinking and smoking and not getting cancer.. what did they eat? "

That 's exactly the problem. China Study didn't care. They didn't take a multivariate approach to the data to determine what the causality. It only points to relationships. Don't ask me, ask your failed study that points to flawed data.

For the list of failures of the China Study is long, and easily googled. Even Denise Minger a former raw foodist recognized them.

  • @Leeanne4debate But if you want to play the "show me yours and I'll show you mine" epidemiological study game, check out my ""Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Lack of long term studies" video. There are multiple studies longer than 5-20 years who have demonstrated lower or no additional relationship between low carb diets and cancer. The Harvard Nurse's Study just happens to be the most famous.

  • Freddy Mercury called, he wants his teeth back

  • I've done Atkins many times in the past, a few times with very good success. Just like you I had to leave the National Guard and not consider a career in the military. After reaching 400 lbs I've decided enough is enough. I'm concerned about my health and I want to be able to play with my children. After watching just a couple of your videos I am already becoming inspired to stick to this for life! Thank you and please keep making videos! You don't know how much it helps.

  • @BarbershopHero I am just glad I could pay back the favors first paid to me by others who walked before me. I can definitely see myself in your story too, and know if I could do it then anybody should be. There was nothing unique about me -- just a guy who know what he wanted or at least recognized how far he had gone from where he wanted to be.

  • u seem like such a nice guy!! thank u for all ur useful videos!! xo

  • @thatgirlisangela Thanks! You are too kind. If I can make low carbing, eating healthier, or losing weight easier for someone else, I am happy to do it.

  • I'm a noob to Atkins diet ( I don't do it) but Iv been training like mad, on a low carb, high protein meal plan and I felt real sick the other day so I eat alot of sugar and fat products and my muscle look alot bigger. And I'm 13st 5lbs about 10% BFI I wanna get to 7% for my holiday is Atkins diet a good way?

  • @FiTNESSisKEY As your body acclimates, your athletic performance will be lower. However within 3 weeks or so, it should be back to normal. At 10 percent BFF, you probably don't need to do the Induction side of the diet, but can start at the Ongoing Weight loss phase and level of carbs. You can certainly achieve your goal while on Atkins.

  • Been in ketosis for 15 days and until now felt awesome but today i feel horrible, sleepy, fatigue, dizzy, week.what gives, your thoughts would be helpful.

  • @hughesfan100 Low electrolytes? With your workout schedule, did you potentially have a hard workout the night before?

  • @bowulf How do i get electrolytes without sugar or carbs?I think that i cought a cold cause i felt better affter a couple days.Im hopeing thats it.

  • @hughesfan100 Powerade Zero is a good commercial brand. Alternatively, you can drink chicken broth for sodium replacement. Salt or Salt supplements (potassium chloride) are easy sources for electrolytes, and you can combine either with SF KoolAid.

  • @hughesfan100 you could of course be getting the common cold, i have a cold right now and i had all those symptons about a week and a few days ago

  • I have a question. I started the induction phase December 1, 2010 and I have stayed on the induction since ( I plan to stay on it for the next 6 months). Last Sunday, I binged on pizza, mac and cheese, and sweets (first time cheating), but the next day I went right back on it. Today is day 3 of being back on induction and I do not feel the flu symptoms or anything. Am I doing something wrong?

  • @iMaGiNaTiOnWpAsSiOn Yes, when on induction "cheating" is the kiss of death. U knocked yourself out of ketosis...you're gonna have to start over and just not cheat.

  • @iMaGiNaTiOnWpAsSiOn You might just fortunate one that didn't see the bottom out of sugar glucose or you skated by this time. I wouldn't suggest keep tempting fate, but the temporary water weight gain should have dropped by now.

  • My co-workers, boss, and I am starting on Monday. I'm scared but hoping to get through. Recently gained a lot of weight from Lyrica and not being able to walk due to fibromyalgia. I love this vid. Great heads up. I'll be checking more out. Thx.

  • @karian4 No problem, and be sure to ask any questions you might have. Best of luck!

  • I'm on day three and I have the headache but water does help.

  • @Imogen1885 A lot of the current thinking is that your electrolytes might be low too, and they suggest 1-2 cups of full sodium chicken broth to help.

  • @bowulf Thank you! I will try that.

  • @Imogen1885 The current thinking is that lost electrolytes is contributing to the negative feelings, so there is a suggestion to have 1-2 cups of full sodium chicken broth.

  • todays my first day and like i feel like throwing up and been feeling like that and s tuff but im glad to know its normal

  • @aliyahrennz13 Like I told PsychopathInFoil, make sure you are getting your water and sodium in each day. The new book recommends a cup or two of chicken broth (full sodium), and that should help as well. What you are seeing is normal, but it hopefully can be alleviated as well.

  • @bowulf good thank u and i tried it,,it helped alot

  • I'm hoping what I have is just induction flu. Been feeling sleepy lately. Lifted weights once I was in ketosis and man was it exhausting the first ten to fifteen minutes. After that I had more energy. Also, it seems that everytime I sit down for an hour or so at a time and then stand up I have this weird feeling in my head like the blood is rushing. Drink a lot of water as well.

  • @PsychopathInFoil Sounds a lot like Induction flu and a bit of dehydration as well. The blood rushing is likely due to low blood pressure which can be either due to lack blood volume (not enough water in your diet) or low sodium (not enough salt). You can work on both of these easily by adding salt or the new book recommends 1 or 2 cups of chicken broth daily.

Those electrolytes should also help the fatigue symptoms too.

  • She is so sexy and Russian women gettop5.info

  • Do you feel any better on the new diet? (apart from being slimmer) i.e more energy, clearer thinking etc...

  • @Danebrogen I think the differences are immeasurable between before and then -- even before I was overweight and now. I would never have been a marathon runner pre-Atkins even when I was skinny leaving Basic Training. I have tons of energy now, and my doctor could not be happier with my annual physicals.

I am a lot more confident now and as for clarity of mind, I don't think I ever had a problem. I will say I received as many certifications in my field after starting Atkins as before.

  • @bowulf

I've heard some people saying that your heart rate or BPM maximum (HRmax

) goes notably up when you follow a ketogenic diet. It seems highly unlikely, especially considering it hasn't been documented in any scientific literature to my knowledge. But do you know if there's any truth to this?

  • @Danebrogen It's generally been proven to be opposite according to my anecdotal history. My heart rate and blood pressure pre-Atkins were generally 80 and 135 over 90. After Atkins, that number is closer to 48-52 beats per minute, and a blood pressure of 100 over 60. I can't find any studies that reference resting heart rate, but hypertension is always improved in ketogenic studies.

  • @bowulf

I meant the heart rate at maximum effort, strenuous exercise where you push yourself to the limit to see what your BPM max is. Have you ever tested that after starting on atkins?

  • @Danebrogen Generally you max heart rate is more about your age than one's fitness level or diet, so I would be clueless as to how that would happen to noticeably increase your max heart rate.

  • @bowulf

Yeah that is true of course. I was just wondering if you had tested it, as alot of people on a forum I read a while back claimed that after they started on a ketogenic their BPM max would increase dramatically. They said the reason was that the heart worked differently on ketones or something along those lines.

Seeing as this haven't been documented in scientific literature it seems highly unlikely, on the other hand it seems strange to make up such a story.

  • Ken, I'm in need of some advice. I've been on the induction for 5 weeks now and Ive lost 15 pounds. But, for the pass few days Ive been feeling jittery and weak. Just last week I started Tae bo and i'm working out about 6 days a week now. But, like I said Ive been feeling cold and tired should I move to OWL? I'm afraid to because, I have 73 more pounds to go! Also, I'm nursing but, I consulted a doctor and a nutrionist who both gave me the ok to start the Aktins plan. Should I move on?

  • @UmmAnas1 I would suspect more your electrolytes might be out of order. Be sure to be taking your multivitamen, and some potassium -- check out my hypokalemia video. As for the OWL vs. Induction, I would base them on food preference not this symptom.

  • Ready to night party and meet naughty women **mworld5.info**

  • Hi Ken,

I did the Atkins diet years ago and lost weight, but I didn't stay on it because I felt so tired and sick, I didn't realize there was a term for this until I saw your video, Thanks you have inspired me to get back on the wagon and stick it out. I need to loose 60 pounds and with your inspiration I know I can do it now, keep the videos coming cause having visualization helps keep motivation going, God Bless you and your family.

  • @sleepyhines I know the first month can be pretty rough to endure. You are changing how the body works or fuels itself, and is pretty resistant both physically and mentally to the change.

I am glad I was able to voice what you experienced.

Right now I have enough video ideas to last through next April at least on my present schedule - one every 3-6 days, so I don't think you should have any fear that they are stopping any time soon. :-)

    Thanks for watching!

  • I just started the Atkins diet and I noticed you have a super gay looking pink bag on the floor behind you. Can I stay straight on the diet or will I slowly loose the weight in fat but gain a huge pile of girly stuff? :-)

  • @BIGSBYTREM In fact, you can be so straight that you can produce 4 children of which 3 could be girls. Atkins is good for one's virility.

  • @bowulf HAHAHA I was wondering what sort of exercise you recommend to compliment the diet. I have been doing one hour a day alternating upper body and lower body with one day off for some yoga or just a long walk. Is this enough? I look like a super healthy and very fit person with the exception of my FAT stomach. I just started back on Atkins and am in the flu phase right now..Just wondering what you did at that phase..

    Cheers

  • @BIGSBYTREM For the first month, I did nothing but get the diet right. After that month, I started lifting 3 days a week and walking or elliptical 3 days a week. I progressed from there to biking and then to running.

  • Kent I had to come over and watch this to reassure me. My head has been killin my since last night..I take advil is that ok on induction...I took 800 ml to get it to go away last night but I can tell it's tryin to creep back up again. Thanks for posting to my new video..I redid it and added a header and starting pic at the end so your comment wont be posted but I thank you for taking the time to watch and post. Rebecca Jen

  • God i wish people would get informed about atkins. people still think i sit down and eat half a dozen cheeseburgers without a bun then have a brick of cream cheese for dessert. I actually eat less on Atkin's and will never go back

    Great video

  • @GChmpln I hear you. But at least their idiocy or ignorance is easy to spot, and whether they want to listen to the truth, you at least know where they are coming from.

  • I have been induction for 10 days and do notice a very minor slimming but no weight loss on the scale. YES I HAVE FOLLOWED INDCUTION RULES TO THE LETTER.

  • @jvarela965 If you post your menus on a site like Fitday or thedailyplate, I'll review them.

Check out my second attempt or golden shot theory video for why Induction might not be as successful this time as it was last year when you tried it.

  • @jatuper @jatuper Really what is the point to your spam? My health has only been phenomenal since starting this diet. I have 6 years of medical blood analysis and physicals to prove it.

The willingness of others to bury their heads in the sand and be denial is outstanding. Exactly what necessary thing am I missing in my diet? See my Atkins Misconception series where I address most of the Atkins Exposed bad science claims. Some are too unbelievable to even think people believe.

  • Sorry I posted the same ? twice, I didn't see that it posted so I tried it on another video page.

  • I am having some trouble. I lost 50# last year, gained 10# back, and I am trying to get back on.

*Having a hard time with Induction due to a recent lack of time to plan and prep, which last year had tons of time. So I may not be eating bad foods, but I am having trouble eating right amounts.

*Do not know if I am in ketosis or not. I never really felt the signs before, and the sticks do not work for me.

*Not losing, just the same 2-3# going up and down.

    *Don't feel the same drive.

    Any ideas?

  • @okmama Rediscover your motivation to lose. Figure out the "why" you want to lose, what does it mean in concrete terms or visual images, and then working the daily amounts are easier to perform.

If you are eating the way 2002 described Induction (cups vs carbs), you are in ketosis and producing ketones. Are you seeing the other effects of ketosis?

Check out my "why am I not losing on Induction?" video. That video has some good ideas on where to start other than motivation as well.

  • @comfykittydesigns That's the unfortunate thing about the medical profession. They act as experts in fields they have little experience or wrong information. I probably would have walked out and signed a refusal of treatment.

There are enough doctors that support the ketogenic positions that an imposition to the contrary could certainly be seen as malpractice. As for immunity issues, I haven't been more healthy since starting Atkins. Brain cancer is specifically helped by ketogenic diets.

  • PS: On other benefits. A ketogenic diet controls epilepsy in children. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, most children improve on it, but a full 1/3 become seizure free without drugs. Not surprisingly, parents report that their kids are also more alert when off the sugar/downer-drug regimen.

  • I've felt like total crap for 2 weeks BUT... my blood sugar is normal without using insulin or drugs! Woo-hoo! It' s good to know Atkins Flu is only temporary. Meanwhile, I'm gonna just suck it up. I don't have a weight problem, I have "pre-diabetes" (some people say it's diabetes per se, just an early stage.) I'd like to see more emphasis on the fact that low-carb is about more than quick weight loss.

  • @anotherjoe50 Yep, there are so many other health benefits to low carb that sometimes I think the weight loss is just icing on the cake. From cancer prevention, diabetes prevention and *gasp* cure, hypotension reduction, to more energy, it's no wonder that the researchers and doctors are seeing ketogenic diets as cure to Metabolic Syndrome plaguing Americans.

  • A high protein, low fat, low carb diet, has given me arthritis by eating too much protein, too little lubricating fats, dried up my joints due to jogging for months on a low fat diet. I tested my pH on high protein = 5-5.5, as an experiment I ate lots of beef lard oneday and found my urine pH8! I am shocked & I have learnt AT LAST saturated fats are good for our health, stops acidity of meat, meat is high in phosphorus = phosphuric acid, which leaches Ca/Mg from bones, protein should be 30-35!

  • hi can you help me on this one plz ...i've been on the atkins for about 6wks now i've lost about 21pounds and have hit the wall... drinking water not cheated on my diet AT ALL but my weight loss has been the same for a week now getting frustrated with it...plus my urine still shows i have ketones so what’s going on with me...would you could u plz help ???

  • @zaheedaparveen What you are seeing is normal. You won't necessarily lose every week as the body adjusts to the lower weight. Check out my Post Induction Stall Syndrome video and explains why you shouldn't over-react or try to outthink the diet.

  • @bowulf thank you : )

  • @zaheedaparveen Eat beef lard, lower carbs to 5-15%, do not fear fat, do not eat protein in excess it is acidic, check pH urine, I have learnt AT LAST saturated fats are good for our health, stops acidity of meat, meat is high in phosphorus = phosphuric acid, which leaches Ca/Mg from bones, protein should be 30-35!

Veggies are good, make them low starchy ones, FAT is crucial. Eat very low carb 15g, lots of beef traditional dripping like 75-100g eat veggies, some protein

  • hi ive been doing atkins now for 2 weeks..my second attempt, i did go through the flu and it was worse this time and lasted 4-5 days while first time lasted 2 days.ive lost 15 lbs in 14 days....what i wanted to ask is at the moment im feeling estatic..high almost ... will this feeling last? because its fantastic ..thank you

  • @sugarcube67 I'd love to say the exact feeling will last forever, but all good things dim and become simply normal. I will say the feelings of energy, of rightness, and being capable do continue. It may not always be roses and a mental high, but it certainly is better than the former norm of sluggishness or rollercoaster of high then lows.

  • @bowulf oh yes i totally agree..no one in work can believe how much energy i have when previously i used to have to pull myself up the stairs..i now run up them..all 4 flights and just feel fantastic all day..and also this is great exercise , i also now walk to work and back and walk round my place of work for 6 ish hours ..and i dont get the tiredness when ive finished work .i used to just flop on the sofa but now i could go to work all over again..it simply is fantastic..thanks for the videos

  • @sugarcube67 Lol i got abs and im depressed...

  • Today is the day I am starting atkins. I have lost a total of 32 pounds with WW and after almost a year in trying, I am finding I have way more weight to loose and was looking for something more. I would like to thank you for your videos and to let you know that the next 14 days will be the hardest thing I've done since raising my children. But the end results will be just as gratifying!!

  • @kydirtyred I hear you about the next 14 days. I can remember the mental impact of wanting something I couldn't have, but it does get better. Good luck and much perseverance in the next few days.

  • @bowulf

<~~~already have the headaches and it's not even dinner time.

  • @kydirtyred Just remember to reward yourself with good tasting legal food. For me it was all the sausage or ribeyes on the grill that I could eat. Focus on the great food you can have to attempt to ward off the feelings of deprivation for what you can't. There are lots of good sites for Atkins Induction recipes (or my videos).

Drink your water - it will help. :-)

  • @kydirtyred ..ive been doing it for 2 weeks and feel great now though i did have a bad "flu" it really is worth the effort as you will get through it and come out the other side feeling fab ..any tips you need please ask as this is my second time doing this

  • I remember once I was on a low calorie diet and a hard discipline of jogging every other day 5 miles. For the first month I did lose about 5 pounds on the second month I lost about 3 pounds and then I came to a plateau. For the next 6 months I couldn't lose a pound despite 1200 cals a day and all the jogging I did not only that when I got tired of the diet I started eating a regular diet of 2000cal well my body was know used to 1200cal and whatever I ate past 1200 would get stored as fat.daSUCKS

  • @Gideon359 I agree you train the body to do more with less, and eventually the body will rebel and say I need to hold on to everything I have. You just hit upon the reason I scoff at the Calorie In Calorie Out proponents. You were burning way more than 1200 Calories per day, but the body changed your metabolism to support that. I am guessing your runs became either tougher and slower too.

But some people will never learn. Eating Atkins "by the book" simply works.

  • thank you for this post , everytime i feel like thoughing in the towel , i watch this and it really helps me , thank you soo much , tomorrow sees my whole frist week on atkins and i've already lost 8Ib.

  • @TheLorimoody You are very welcome, and mega congrats on your progress so far. That is a very good first week.

  • what do u do when you have relapses? do u have to start over again? i am two days in the induction phase and already i have this wild craving for sugar! i am so ashamed i have no willpower (i couldnt resist a lollipop!) the kind with chewing gum inside lol is that ok? or have i ruined it and have to start all over again?!

  • @JaYnEsAyZ Check out my video "I cheated, What now?" video. It really depends on the cheat or how it happened. If it was a craving or inability withstand it, I would probably suggest redoing Induction for a week or so to put the cravings in their place, and figure out why it happened. Why was the lollipop more important to have than the work put in? Were you not progressing through OWL and got bored?

Check out the video, it's better than I can be in 500 characters. :-)

  • @bowulf it did have alot to do with boredom plus the fact i am sugar addicted. are sugar free candies allowed lol?! i just woke up and i still feel tired & run down- i drink lots of water- does it help to stay active during induction? i have been spring cleaning the house :) ps..ill watch the vid and thank u for the info!

  • @JaYnEsAyZ SF Candies are often load with sugar alcohols (stomach problems) and are also limited in number by limit of artificial sweetener servings per day (3).

Being active during Induction helps, but if too much fatigue when you first start, you should focus on getting the eating right. Don't compensate for the exercise with extra carbs is what I always worry about when ppl first start.

PS - Chromium Piccolinate can help w/ cravings.

  • wazzzupdude 13 mentioned everything from atkins exposed . org /

  • I am grateful to bowulf for helping support the low carb community. Some of us have no nurse/doctor or health system that has worked and when we get called psychologically ill or whatever, or hyperchrondriacs or people with low will powers. Reading wazzzupdude13 attitude towards bowulf pisses me off! They don't teach compassion at medical school either!! The low carb diet has worked for so many people, its changed their life, its the way we use to eat, before agriculture/industrial revolution.

  • @Catherine8raw You are very welcome. I entertain or endure these attitudes by detractors as they often force to re-examine what we think we know to what we can prove. The fact that he claims to be a med student only makes me hope the courses for evaluating the research and respect of one's peers / patients are still to come.

Something tells me however given the trite, oft-repeated myths that all was not right in the scenario.

  • The Atkins diet is light years ahead of all other diets by far..simply because its the ONLY diet that can deprive CANCER of its needed energy. So if you or a family member contracts cancer..remember THIS diet. Its the ONLY ONE that will slow cancer down AND may actually kill it in any part of your body. Anyone that knocks this diet is totally clueless and does everyone a disservice...doctors included..remember, cancer feeds ravenously on sugar ONLY..if you remove the sugar, cancer has to slow.

  • @FXNorm I completely agree. By removing or dramatically reducing the cancer cells' SOLE source of fuel (glucose), you allow the body to kill the cells before they cause the issue. A healthy body with a healthy diet does not give cancer a foothold to multiply.

    Great comment!

  • @bowulf is that why the atkins diet has been condemned by the American Cancer Society?... not to mention The American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, The cleveland clinic, the american kidney fund, American College of Sports Medicine, and the National Institutes of Health? The idea of the Atkins diet would be laughable if its consequences were not so potentially serious. You are all being fed lies. fat and lies. Please research this more.

  • @wazzzupdude13 What is really laughable is that Atkineers are leading healthy lives longer and having excellent medical reports, but closed-minded individuals and doctors still are stuck in the past. Wake up and think for yourself. I ran a marathon this weekend. What did you do? I have had 6 years of excellent health, rejoined the military, became a firefighter, ran multiple marathons, have an abundance of excess energy to volunteer, and eliminated any heart risk factors. What about you?

  • @bowulf I am currently in medical school, so please don't lecture me on health or nutrition. Group think has no place in the medical world, new research is wholeheartedly welcomed by the scientific community so long as it is backed by sound scientific evidence. The problem with the atkins diet is that it isn't, and it is people like you who think they are smarter than medical professionals who are putting people in jeopardy by playing off the ignorance of the masses.

  • @wazzzupdude13 If the medical professionals would admit that they aren't so the sole arbiter of the truth and would listen to the growing amount of scientific evidence supporting the low carb lifestyle, maybe the medical profession would gain some credibility back. There are many doctors who actually agree with this approach for all their patients.

To portray this diet as one of non-science simply ignores the many studies and scientists that are out there. I would suggest you do your research.

  • @wazzzupdude13 - Do you think medical school has the answer for everything, what a joke, even scientific literature has not given us a diet yet that works for long! I had to find my own way to sort my self out as usual! I have lost >10 stone alone on a low carb diet & worked! Medical school doesn't teach much nutrition, you don't want to cure us, just fill us with drugs, support the big pharma and then you call us ignorant! Your very big headed and think you know it all, you'll be dissapointed

  • @wazzzupdude13 - what if the real truth be... your currently watching the football and are not at medical school. I know you like everything proved, so prove to me your training to be a doctor! At 20 you would have just finished your 3 A levels which you start at 18, and would not of even done a year at medical school, even if you were trainning. In some ways you sound smart, but it is trying the low carb diet that beats all what man proves, coz science is disproved later! Try a paleo diet!

  • @wazzzupdude13 your probably a medical assistant. General doctors don't have much knowledge about dieting. Once I told my doc what I hate for breakfast and he told me I was eating about 2,000 calories. The truth is that the doc was stupid because all I ate was 2 eggs with 2 tablespoons of oil, the most this can be is about 400 cals if not less. The atkins the best diet. Medical assistant is not all of that. It is a fact that cutting all sweets, tortillas all high carb will make u lose weight.

  • @Gideon359 Funny the "doc" closed his account and perhaps even decided to go back to studying.

  • @wazzzupdude13 So far the supposed lies are working just fine for me and thousands of others...

  • @bowulf Just because you are losing weight does not mean that it is healthy. I could stop drinking water and I bet I would lose a couple pounds. When the chief health officer for the State of Maryland, was asked "What's wrong with the Atkins Diet?" He replied "What's wrong with... taking an overdose of sleeping pills? You are placing your body in jeopardy." He continued "Although you can lose weight on these nutritionally unsound diets, you do so at the risk of your health and even your life."

  • @wazzzupdude13 Not losing, lost weight (211 pounds) 6 years ago.

Not only did I lose the weight, my cholesterol went down, my blood pressure went down, my resting heart rate went down, my blood glucose went down, my triglycerides went way down, my liver and kidney went UP, my length of time doing cardio went way up, my max weight lifted went up, and my race times from 5k to marathon went down. By any definition of health, I have it.

My own doctor is extremely pleased with my state.

  • @bowulf The warnings from medical authorities continue to this day. "People need to wake up to the reality," former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop writes, that the Atkins Diet is "unhealthy and can be dangerous."

  • @wazzzupdude13 More repeated thoughts... How many times do you have to refer to the same individual? I could certainly speak to Jeff Volek, Stephen Phinney, Eric Westman, Bill Yancy, Richard Bernstein, Mary Ross Vernon, and many other doctors and Ph.D. All who support the low carb lifestyle. Does majority equal right or correct, or does it simply equal group-think and people unwilling or unable to challenge the norm?

  • @bowulf Yes precisely, Richard Bernstein would of been dead 30 years earlier if it were not for low carb!!!

  • @Catherine8raw Yes, but don't you know no doctors recommend low carb? Or that all the science PROVES low carb approach is dangerous?

I appreciate STUDENTS who think they know everything based upon their research from a textbook and will rail against reality when it conflicts with their view. Sarcasm off - you are doing excellent job in confronting the myths and misinformation attempted to be perpetuated.

  • @bowulf One less ignorant doctor prescribed a low carb (40g), high protein diet for a person who could not get rid of gout on his home grown veggie diet. He ended up going back on beef steak and his gout went, so did his gnawing hunger! you probably know, gout is linked to fructose and high insulin levels that raise uric acid or inhibit excretion of uric acid, respectively. Normally, I have found if a doctor/dietican says its bad/dangerous it is the go-ahead its healthy? LOL!

  • @wazzzupdude13 - so can surgery and weight loss drugs and diets that don't work, so person ends up fatter. Look at the low carbers like Bowuld before and after, can't you use your logic to figure he is healtheir now. People go from eating white sugar/bread and junk all day and eat protein and fat and some veggies, nuts. Grass fed animals are best. We like are vitamins A, D, E which travels in saturated fats.

  • @bowulf the Chair of Harvard's nutrition department went on record before a 1973 U.S. Senate Select Committee investigating fad diets: "The Atkins Diet is nonsense... Any book that recommends unlimited amounts of meat, butter, and eggs, as this one does, in my opinion is dangerous. The author who makes the suggestion is guilty of malpractice."

  • @wazzzupdude13 Hmmm, because a lot of the material coming from Harvard scientists lately like Harvard Nurse's Study and Penelope Green point to Low Carb approach being more effective at weight loss and being associated with lower heart risk factors.

  • @wazzzupdude13 The number diabetes researcher in the world recommends a low carb diet. The studies prove over and over the dramatic health improvements on a ketogenic diets. Specific health people who refuse to acknowledge the benefits simply highlight to their own ignorance.

  • @bowulf A low carb diet is recommended for diabetics. But not everyone in the world is diabetic. Please tell me how running a marathon went without any carbs? I would love to know because as a collegiate athlete who never had to lose 200+ pounds to be healthy I know the importance of carbs especially in long aerobic activities such as marathons. It is literally impossible to run a marathon without carbs so why would you think your body is healthier without them?

  • @wazzzupdude13 "It is literally impossible to run a marathon without carbs so why would you think your body is healthier without them? "

Since I have ran 3 full marathons and many more half marathons without them, I have proven your statement completely false. How does it feel to be proven so wrong by someone else's experiences. When reality confronts your presuppositions and proves them false, you can do two things - bury your head in the sand or change. Which will you do?

  • @wazzzupdude13 - no lots of people have ran on nuts/fatty meat. Using fat for fuel feel great!! The person burns fat for fuel, various high fat, low carb tribes do alot more than a marathon, they burn fat for fuel;

    1. African pastoralist culture is the Kalenjins of kenya. Raw and fermented dairy products form the bulk of the diet. 2.Masai: Milk, meat, blood. 3. Sambura tribe of Urganda: 400g saturated fat a day. 4. Pakapuka and tokelau 35-55% of saturated fat of diet of coconut.

  • @wazzzupdude13 - You need to prove to us it is dangerous. I am not a supportr of dairy, but animal fat/prtoein from grass fed animals and plnty of low starchy veggies and nuts was what we use to eat. What diet are you reccomending, and one person that says a diet is bad might be wrong. Nature gives us veggies and animal/fish protein, it was agricuture that provided the grain. We have to cook bean for it has so many posions in. Medical school is not nutrition.
