I think meshuggah should do an album (or at least ep) of just tasty groovey distorted bass and no guitar. instead of a low tuned guitar, it would just be highly tuned bass, AND IT SHALL RULE.
You´re right man. This is the final of DEI tour and Peter Nordin was sick (still nowadays) of Tinitus,,....a serious problem in his ears. Peter was back in Sweden, then Fredrik was obligated to play bass even, play part of his solo guitar on the bass guitar!.
Thansk for the vid, altough I don't get what you try to say with: "fredrik playing bass omgwtf!" All members of Meshuggah can play any instrument the band utilizes, moreover catch33 drumparts are written and programmed by all members. Marten also used to play bass very early on, and Jens was the first Guitar player in the band that developed their guitar sound. It just shows that they are true musicians and they don't have certain "roles".
oh i know, "omgwtf" means more like: oh my god a video of fred playing bass, because it's rare...it's not that I didn't know he was a killer bassplayer as well. I do know they're all incredible musicians and cover not just their typical instrument and role. thanks for pointing that out, anyways. i'm always happy to read from a fellow meshuggah-freak
apparently in their earlier days Meshuggah tried to play as 3 bass players, this aim for deeper tones I understand led them to be attracted to the 8 string guitars they use. I did also hear that there was one tour where the bass player was really ill.
FREDRIK THORDENDAL will perform with the Mats/Morgan All Star Team on the MELLOBOAT 8-9 March 2008. It´s shaping up to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The band incl.: Mats & Morgan Gustaf Hielm Fredrik Thordendal Meshuggah Mattias Ia Eklundh Freak Kitchen Lasse Hollmer Samla Mammas Manna The party will take place over 40 hours on a ferry at the Baltic Sea. Questions & tickets: info at mellotronen dot com Info: myspace dot com slash melloboat This is going to be the party of a lifetime!
it's not the 8 string guitar, otherwise you'd count 8 strings, i count 5 so it's not even a guitar at all. the bassist story's the reason, was on their hp as well, nordin had to leave and fred did the bass.
It's cuz Peter Nordin got vertigo. It was so bad that when he would try to stand up he would puke (due to airplane flight over here). Airplanes really don't have the best air quality, and if you think they change the filters on the pumps after every take off and landing, your sadly mistaken :-)
awesome!

They started with 7 strings drop tuned to b-flat, the super-low tuning stuff didn't start until after Chaosphere...

i heard somewhere that they tried to all use basses at one point. the sound ended up being to muddy, thus the 8 string saga is born.

Ballsak23 4 years ago
That's why I don't like playing bass with a pick, I wouldn't want to be able to be replaced by a guitarist so easily.
Aberusugi 4 years ago
well fredrik is not JUST a guitarist, he's God so he can replace anyone he wants to...Tomas gets sick? Fredrik can sit on them drums! lolZen
