I own the audio bootleg of this concert. I think it's his best ever. I have seen him live six times including The Pony. None compare to this concert. So pure.
I'm 50 now (wow, how did THAT happen?), but one of the defining moments in my life was being at this concert in Passaic, NJ in '78. It was my first Springseen concert and I was absolutely blown away listing to this incredible force on stage. Yes. I was very young - and I was into Zeppelin, Neil Young and the Eagle and had NO idea who this guy was ... But, I had a ticket (if I drove my friends) and trusted them when they told me that he was incredible. It worked out.
The Born to Run record was the first time I was into an album at the exact same time I was going through all of the same emotions and experiences expressed in the music. This album is perfect, and this version of Thunder Road is particularly amazing. When I saw Bruce live in 2008 (and as I said, was going through the experiences of the album), I cried and screamed all the lyrics. Thanks a lot for posting this. I had never seen the video to go with it.
Clafence, thanks for all the joy and happiness you've shared with us over the years. you were really the best and Lord knows we will miss you. Thanks to the wonderful Boss ofcourse for sharing you with us. God Bless Bruce, Clarence and the Lengendary E Street Band.
Spent my better days sitting in my first boyfriend's bedroom marvelling to the "new sound" of Springsteen and the band - my heart aches for those days and that wonderful innocence. No stress, no fear, just love and life x
@Janinalittlewolf ...you are not alone little sister...every generation must have it's day, so like our fore-fathers we must move aside however reluctantly, and make room for the youngsters ; )
My fondest memory of Clarence was listening to KSAN's broadcast of the E Street Band live at Winterland, 12-15-1978, and Clarence as Santa Claus bringing down the house with Bruce!
The first time I saw Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band live in the late 70's they opened with Thunder Road. The big mans sax playing sent shivers down the spine.
I will never forget that day and will never forget that man.
im not an emotional person at all but dammit every time i hear this live version i cant help but cry....damn you bruce for reminding me that im only human...lol...
i;m a truck driver i drive out there all the time and every time i go out there i think of this song all the time i bring his music all over the country fro mass to cal to tex
@vinginz88 Bruce says: "There was this Robert Mitchum movie" pause, "It was about these moonshine-runners down South" pause "..and I never saw the movie I only saw the poster in the lobby in the theater...(laugh)" pause, "I took the title and I wrote this song" pause "but I didn't think there was ever a place like what I wrote in the song,..didn't know if it was or not(?)" pause "..and..We was out in the desert...it was summer time..driving to Nevada, .."
@vinginz88 ",,,and we came upon this house on the side of the road...this indian built.." pause "It had a big picture of Gernomino out front, with 'Landlord' it said 'Landlord' over top ... had a big sign that said 'This is the Land of Peace, and Love, Justice and No Mercy' and it pointed down this little dirtroad and said 'Thunder Road'..." "This is 4 Mattie!" Song starts.
This is one of the great rock anthems of all time, simply because it says: "lets go out and grab life by the balls". Now THAT is what rock and roll is about. The desire to feel completely alive.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN IS THE SOUL OF AMERICAN ROCK AND ROLL. ANYONE WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THIS MUST A DESPERATE PERSON LOOKING FOR HIS OR HER ONE AND ONLY SHOT AT FAME: TO BE IN THE MINORITY OF LITERAL LOSERS WHO DON'T LIKE IT. FOR THE UNIMAGINATIVE AND THE SOUL-LESS, THE ONLY WAY TO LATCH ON TO ANY STORY IS TO BE A NAYSAYER.
Wow, I had the bootleg album from this show "Pierre De Resistance", still have it on cassette along with the Winterland Show, The Cleveland show, The Roxy in LA and the Atlanta show all from the 78 tour, in an old cassette case in the basement., probably bought the TDK tapes at crazy eddie, too bad I don;t have a cassett deck. in 1977 they sent a shuttle into to space with the purpose of finding Extra terrestial life. on this shuttle they had various items from our world including Mozart and Bach pieces. so far there has been no 'reply' from any distant civilizations. im sure if they had put this song on that shuttle playing in repeat a whole shit load of alians would of decended on this planet wanting to know "what the hell that was".
these black-and-white videos you have are the best on you tube.
The sound quality is excellent.
My sister bought this record when I was a kid, and I was walking by her locked bedroom and was mesmerized. I remember sitting against the bedroom door listening through the door each time she it. I was probably about 10. She realized I was becoming a huge fan and I guess she thought it was cute because she took me to see him in concert about a year or two later in another city.
This just describes me..."Don't turn me home again, Just can't face myself alone again"...."So your scared and your thinkin' maybe we ain't that young anymore, show a little faith there's magic in the night, you ain't a beauty but hey your alright" Being almost 40, wanting something, but do you want it badly enough, and /or have the guts and confidence to go after it? Thanks, Bruce, it's perfect!
If I had to pick a single note to represent all of American music it might be when the Big Man hits the sax at 5:37. Rock, soul, and a lot of magic. Can't think of anything else that compares.

He's was a great entertainer though misusing his fame to push Obama stinks. It just proves that intelligence for musicians counts about as much as beauty does for cops.
@SnapItBaby PS: I agree with you, assuming you think Obama is a disaster. However, thank God the previous President is gone. He was 10x worse. Wouldn't you agree?
As an American writer, the equal of Kerouac, Whitman, Melville or Bob Dylan. Great, great poetry. This song, this performance is the apotheosis of my badly miss-spent youth, and I love it as much today as I did in on the last day of summer 1978, listening to it on WNEW-FM in New York. He would never be this great again, but no one would be....
So, jealous! Would give anything to have seen him at this time......oh for a time machine. I became a fan in the eighties, didn't see my first concert till three years ago. Good thing, 'cause after it was over I would have given up everything to follow him to his next show, and the next and the next.....................
@lidgleymike I hope nobody derided you. His poetry is prolific, great, and meaningful. Most so called poets are not understandable. So, you are correct.
@lidgleymike right up there with Dylan, right up there with Dylan. After 9/11/01 America asked for Bruce to help us get through with some music-Bruce gave us the Rising-pure musical genius and on demand yet!-Rock On Bruce..we love you God's gonna want you playing soon enough- Heaven's gonna have one hell of a band one day!! <3
I own the audio bootleg of this concert. I think it's his best ever. I have seen him live six times including The Pony. None compare to this concert. So pure.

@GlenQuagmireful To your list of great musical writers/poets, one must add Jackson Brown.

So, jealous! Would give anything to have seen him at this time......oh for a time machine. I became a fan in the eighties, didn't see my first concert till three years ago. Good thing, 'cause after it was over I would have given up everything to follow him to his next show, and the next and the next.....................

Quite simply the very, very, very best version of all the versions of Thunder Road he's ever done. This makes me weep, it's that perfect!

Said it before, been derided, but for me this man's one of the greatest poets of our time (along with being one of the greatest musicians).

@lidgleymike I hope nobody derided you. His poetry is prolific, great, and meaningful. Most so called poets are not understandable. So, you are correct.
