awesome video! thanks for releasing the shark! ive seen way too many idiots keep sharks when they surely went to waste. Nicely done- what kinda kayak was that?
I used 40 lb. single-strand steel leader, and a circle hook. The circle hook went right in the corner of its mouth, away from the teeth. That's how they usually work. They are so effective, that FWS is mandating that they should be used in Florida for offshore fishing, for safer releasing of undersized fish (or catch & release).
Yeah, right... and if you say you're destined for love at the age of 85, I'd say you're deluded.
This is real... about as real as it gets. Some people sit around and watch TV, others actually go out and DO stuff. Try it sometime... see what it's like to LIVE - not just dream.
I guess it's not your kind of sport then, Bab... that rod and reel costs a bit too much to let go - LOL!!! Screaming? That's cool... it really is an adrenaline rush, when something that big is towing you around,,, sort of like having a tiger by the tail.
Yep - I guess it was a bit crazy... I released the shark alive, although I am not strictly a catch-and-release fisher. While kayak camping in the 10,000 islands of south Florida, I caught a 4' 9" blacktip shark (featured in my 3-part video "A Lulu of a Blacktip"), which provided dinner for our group for 2 nights.
Thanks LC1Banana, and sk8surf00 - I'm glad you both enjoyed the video! It was a lot of fun making it, but it's even better, knowing that others have enjoyed it too.
Thanks "Down"! It sure was fun. If you really are "down on my luck", you probably don't want to try shark fishing out of a kayak, though... it's probably not the sort of thing to try, to change your luck - LOL!
Don, don't you "worry" about having a distressed shark that close to your lil old kayak. It gives me the willies just watching this.... How did you know how to handle the shark to release it, i'd have cut the line for sure.
I did cut the leader to release it. I was about to go for the hook with the pliers, but Byron suggested that I cut the leader instead - good idea. It was an exciting adventure, which I have repeated a couple of times since then. Check out my other videos for the 3-part "Lulu of a Blacktip".

Thank you, phino! I just got back from a 5 day kayak camping trip in the 10,000 islands, where I caught a 4' 9" blacktip shark from my kayak. Haven't even had a chance to check out the video yet - but if it's good, I'll be sure to upload it, and let you know. Thank you, for the comment!
Thanks Johnny! I enjoyed watching you mako shark videos. It is removeable. It slips under the deck bungees for "easy trips", or ties to the deck cleats when going after bigger species. Click "more" in the description for this video, and follow the link to our local kayak fishing discussion group. I have some close-up pics there. No charge to join the group.
Thanks, Kayaman! What part of FL? I fish anywhere from Boca Grande to the 10,000 islands (on the gulf side - SW Florida). Come to our Yahoo group (in the description of this video) if you want to talk fishing!
Thanks, John! I really enjoyed your video, "Kayak Fishing Rod Leash". I just love those DIY projects (I guess it shows... since I paddle a home made wooden kayak!) Don (Woodkayaker)
I'm suprised the shark didn't try to kocked your kayak over!o_o

Thanks Guitar Man! (Suddenly Ray Steven's "Guitarzan" is running through my head!)
I kept a blacktip while camping on an extended trip, and it fed a whole group - no waste.
I built the kayak myself - it's 17 1/2' long by 22" wide - a great touring kayak, with a lot of room for camping gear. Stitch & glue construction.

Ya, now that it's summer time and the beach is pretty much totaly flat i've been taking the yaks offshore.
I've caught a couple five to six foot lemons and a forty three pound kingfish

Woodkayaker nice catch. What type rod holder does Don use. Is it permanently mounted or removable?. I'm hesitant to drill holes on my new Nordkapp.
