  • @formulacountdown Sad piece of shit, you took the time to reply to a quote. Which wasn't aimed at you. Bet you get far in life.

  • HAVE YOU GOT ANY MONEY!!

  • @FlickQuick123 No. Sod off.

  • Has any other band wrote a song about being the victim of a mugging? I know that plenty of thug hip-hop "artists" have written about doing the mugging...

  • micheal j fox on bass?

  • @IsLifeA Close...Foxton, not Fox. But I see the resemblance.

  • class.

  • When the drums kick in at 0:37.....amazing!

  • I'm 12 and I <3 this songg xx

  • IM DOWN IN THE TUBE STATION AT MIDNIGHT OH OW OH OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • songs of a miss spent youth happy days

  • @napalmsniffer you know it my friend !!! many a miss spent night waiting for a tube at midnight !! weller is a genius he totally portrays the times in his lyrics !! you just listen and it all floods back !! may he rock on forever !! thank god i was there in the day !! i pity the kids with the shit they gotta listen to !!

  • stop the spot!

  • @Sirreal1958 pssssssssssshhh How you can say you're on a losing end, when you're listening to the Jam? Posers man...

  • Surely one of the greatest bands in my lifetime.

  • I wrote this songs words for an English test at school back when it first came out... I got an A+ my only one as it happens!

  • @Binckes64 A* surely in the UK?

  • Comment removed

  • read the lyrics, its one of the most frightning personal songs ever, the last verse is so chilling. my friend's girlfriend got mugged in oct 11 and has to have surgery now, as they knocked her out, breaking her nose, all for the sake of (nothing as it turned out in her handbag) a pair of trainers I suppose they were after, having seen them looting in the summer . who would live in london nowadays?

  • My dad loves this song!

  • Mine too

  • One of my all time favorite songs.

  • Look at Foxton's suit, what a classic!!

  • The king of 64th notes! fugin Buckler kills!

  • such an underrated songwriter

  • @formulacountdown a.k.a.Mr1DanSmith I still see two lonely, over-weight, sweaty attention seekers. maybe you can date your alter ego. seems you two have much in common besides small minds and huge body odor..

  • @Mr1DanSmith I am what I eat. you've had too many right-wing, hairy in your arse

  • A mixed career, but this one's a classic.

  • Man, These guys were freakin' cool. I mean, with those suits, the attitude, and their incredible musicianship just can't be beat.

  • Am I hearing things or did the end of the song disappear down the tube station?

  • @formulacountdown no, just a lonely attention seeker seems to me

  • @shrvomatic1 You are a huge twat.

  • the jam,,britains best ever band!!!!!!!

weller wrote songs that ment something,, there still valid today,,sadly.

  • That is probably the most unrealistic miming ever!

  • @formulacountdown Paul Weller hated to mime, all the bands in those days had to mime as dictated by the BBC.

I watched Top Of The Pops when Paul Weller decided to protest, He stood there and didn't open his mouth while the song played as a protest against miming. He wanted to play live.

Only because of Weller bands were able to play live.

  • @Lynnimod That's pretty cool. Respect to Weller for that.

Fantastic song. Disturbing as hell, punch in the gut ending to the story. But still fantastic.

  • Whenever I sing this I always say "left wing meetings". I'm such a facist, aren't I?

  • I love it when you rediscover music that you loved & left alone for a while. Amazing band, missed you!!!!!! Glad you boys are back on replay…….

  • this band done more for british music than any band since the Beatles!!!!

  • @donutden The Clash > The Beatles > The Jam

  • ha ha just look at the audience slightly bemused , dont think they realised how big

    the jam became

  • I always thought that Weller's dress sense was okay but overrated, in fact I thought he looked like Rodney Trotter when I was a kid, but he looks as sharp as f--k here.

  • Favourite Jam tune!!!!!!!! I think. :-)

  • 1 of the coolest bands of that great period in British music..Untouchable was Paul Weller..He wrote some of the best songs ever back then but he's still penning classics..absolute LEGEND! Now I know that word gets used too much thesedays but he's earned the title of Rock'N'Roll LEGEND!!!

  • underrated singer songwriter

  • @formulacountdown I'm afraid he's correct.

  • @MrRik2 No, he's wrong.

  • @formulacountdown He doesn't actually say it's a bad-thing.

  • Paul Weller's finest song. Brilliant lyrics and a brilliant tune.

  • The wine will be flat and the currie's gone cold.

    Genius in its simplicity.

  • The amount I times I've re-played this JUSt to learn the ending Verse.. IT FUCKING BRILLIANT (And Hard to learn)

  • A deeply moving song, especially if you grew up in South London in the 1970s/80s

  • "I said I was down in the tube sation at midnight..."

  • Best live band!!! Saw them twice in the bay area before they were banned in the states or they just decided to not come back.

  • @menencho5718 They we're Banned in the US O.O?

  • i like this song

  • @tortsftw This is THe most informative & Discriptive Comment xD

  • best song ever...all i can say

  • "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero", "A Town Called Malice", "That's Entertainment", and "Smithers-Jones". No band ever came close to expressing the harsh realities of life and what it's like to constantly be on the losing end of things the way The Jam did. They did not get enough recognition.

  • Definitely one of the best songs ever. Fact.

  • excellent!!

  • 4 people haven't been down in the tube station at midnight

  • PURE GENIUS

  • i love this song, been listening to it all night..brilliant stuff thanks for posting

  • Why has has this got less than 200 thousand plays, it should be 200 million, I must have played it a million times. Tune of the century!!!!

  • @rubber238 It's one per every new viewer, not every listen. You could listen to it 20 million times, It won't change unless someone new views it.

  • Quality

  • foxton started it all for me 20 years later i still love doing it.,.never got the credit he should ,bass was almost the lead part and the driving force for all the jam songs...simple music no frills no tricks .one of the best bands ever from the uk..

i love to see the younger generation listening to the jam, great music will always be listened to..

  • After 3 ppl got shot & killed in the subway of Santiago, Chile (being the first 3 murdered people in the history of that subway), the first thing that it came to my mind was this song in particular.

  • @KyKy1997Ere

Hello, I'm over 45 and I'm a big Mod....Welcome to proper music listening, none of this Amy Whinehouse sh1t.

  • a master piece

  • Seen this band half a dozen times and they never dissapointed they were awesome every time

  • fuck me weller this song gives you genius status(and you so fucking well know it)and good luck to ya......you so deserve it

  • Weller, Foxton, Buckler=Legends.

  • I'd kill to see them live its a shame there not together D:

  • Surrey is cooler than you think, eh? ;-) ...

  • I got mugged the other day.

While feeling aroun in one of my pockets for stuff i felt my keys along with some loose change.

This song came into my head.

"They took the keys, she'll think its me"

Me keys had my parents phone numbers on and through that they could have found my home adress. I took time to work around the keys and got headbutted for taking too long.

I kept my keys. And feel safe at night.

    Thanks to this song.

  • @Wilipeidia Fucking brilliant story mate! Well done! ;)

  • @123jsbach

    thanks lol

but i feel i owe paul weller a lot..specially since the bastards are still loose.

  • @Wilipeidia Bit grim. Wee neds. Maybe you should erase your parents numbers from your keys though? Just a thought for your general security! Take care! :)

  • @platuner Pullin' aaahht tha caawk

  • Why the fuck is a dance song advertised before this?

  • auwh a baby faced weller!

  • no band have reached this standard of songwriting since

  • @DavyDmusic1 well some write great songs but not like this bands nearly nonstop selection of great tunes on a consistent level- weller was on fire from late 78 until the split- the jam were near perfect the only fault i could find was foxtons mullet!

  • @salvadory yes the mullet nearly spoiled everything!!

  • Brilliant band...my Dad is a huge fan and now his 3 girls are too, love The Jam!!

  • i saw the jam at stafford bingley hall, best gig ever !!! Paul weller f****** genius

  • This is is seriously the greatest song ever. I say that about every song that I love, but this, is truly a unique piece of art, Weller's masterpiece and an incredible closing track for the most underappreciated contemporary album of all-time.

  • @mookiebomber Pure and utter class.

  • aaahhhhh, just love this!!!

  • Problem is even at 50 years old I still get angry when he says about his wife setting the cutlery, polishing glassing and pulling out the cork - some of us didn't even know what a bottle of wine with a cork was in those days, was for the bourgeousie.

Go for it brown leather, is all I feel at a moment like this.

  • @Dachakugan

i thought it was pulling out the pork for three years. i mean who eats pork at midnight? and when them lads smell of too many right wing meetings. just how many right wing meetings is acceptable?

  • @youngie123 Lol you - lots of people eat pork at midnight, especially the sweet and sour type from the takeaway still open while they stumble home but, whatever and tbh I sense you care about as much as I do :) As for how many right wing meetings? Who knows but perhaps it's as many as get you noticed so the newer generation who have their own beasts to fight stick a label on you?

Peace, love and see you on the other side.

  • weller looks so tall but is only about 6 foot i ve stood next to him before - but hes rail thin and that suit has a killer skinny cut- ace tune ace band and weller never looked as razor sharp as this

  • @salvadory 6ft is pretty average

  • @Kenshin8080 that was my point- hes not as tall as he looks!

  • Got smacked at Mile End, Brum v WHU, fuckin hurt.

  • diggin the bass line

  • i was a biker when this song was out..got the shit kicked out of me in glasgow underground..by the mods, was in a coma for 4 weeks, the doctors advised my parents to switch off life support,,,they refused,,i made full recovery,,,my friend gave me this single as a present..after nearly 30 years i dont know whether i love it or hate it.

  • @iainthegimp you love it, fuckin love it, n fuck the mods

  • I remember a London tube station at midnight once when I was 18 around the time of this song. Alone and pretty scared. I often watch this to remember

  • Was the equiptment they were using stage props, I wonder. No Rickenbacker guitars. Although the Bass Bruce is playing does look like the one on the back of "All Mod Cons" album cover a Peavey bass ??? or may be a fender ?? looks more Peavey to me. Anybody ??

  • Keep clicking on 2:59 it's weird.

  • Who's the bassist? He's awesome :)

  • @AlexTheHat bruce foxton

  • @AlexTheHat Awesome bassist! However, If you wanna know the true meaning of pain then listen to his solo album after they went their separate ways. Truly awful... Went AWOL to see them play last gig Brighton '82. Well worth polishing dustbins for a week! Special times.

  • 2 people can fuck off right now

  • Awesome track.........always hits the right buttons!!

  • I can't stop listening to it <3

  • fucking sick bassline. 2 people misclicked it seems.

  • Anybody recognise the make of Paul's guitar?

  • @lhawes92 Looks like an Encore to me, no idea what model and I'm not entirely sure that it is but looks like one.

  • @lhawes92 Its a les paul junior m8

  • Nope, that's an Eccleshall. You can see the logo on the pickguard at :45

  • But the song is about being attacked, beaten and left for dead in the tube station while the assailants have taken his house keys and may go next to attack his wife at home. Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=5nbG3f9NGg8

  • why is there even a dislike button for this !

  • feckin genius personified , the Weller Feller must have walked this Earth before . He was world weary in his early twenties ! ......... jeez he was too young to be so cynical ! ... I think he tried to be happy during the Style Council years ... but his racing bike ran off the road .

  • They were the most anti-rasist ant any ist of all.

  • @ckwrich1 no hear at the start after the tube goes past oi then a racist word

  • @madasahammer1 Just a note on rascism, it exists because of mindset that is trained to associate with the obvious and to do so negatively . Being any particular race is no qualification in life.

  • @ckwrich1 your missing the point he ment to put that in there so it gave of an effect of what its like to be in the tubestation

  • @madasahammer1 Yes this would be in keeping with the "Rock Against Racism" that was a featire of the Jam's political stance and the UK University wide program in 78/79/80 that began the fight to free Nelson Mandela.

  • racism at the start

  • top of the range :)

  • 2 people smell of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs

  • @jivlar

and too many right wing meetings...

  • This is my fav track ever......story over !!

  • which two wankers no nothing about music

  • to write a tune like this at a young age just goes to show what a fantastic song writer he is.

  • What a fantastic tune , one of my favourites by the mighty JAM !!!! and the words so true of the society of today , let alone when the song was made .

  • that was the worst miming ever!! Great fucking song though!! my band are doing it!! great crowd pleaser!!

  • they got the audience bouncing there......great track though....

  • "The glazed dirty steps, repeat my own and reflect my thoughts" Weller has a real way with words. He sort of paints a picture when describing his British youth days in a very visual way.

  • amazing

  • this is my shit

  • That Baseline!!, although the TOTP miming is always awful haha!

  • john Lennon didn't play the bass man.

    neither did Townshend

  • this song was banned from airplay, too violent. apparently . still got no. 15

  • The Jam are so phenomenal! Really! Paul Weller is the greatest songwriter ever! Bruce Foxton is the best bassist!

  • to all mods love it

  • Top Song From A Top Band

  • i hope that 1 dislike is for the shit deco around this song......LOVELIVE THEJAM

  • who the fuck pressed dislike ?? go have a long hard look at yourself !

  • @salopvilla they got the bus

  • @salopvilla they probly only misckilcked.....

u have probly caused them to suicide....

    think about that.

  • @salopvilla Some silly cunt mate, who's next ride will be his first.......... Clown !!!!

  • @salopvilla look at some of the ''guests'' they don't know what's hit them.

  • @salopvilla AGREE 100% son BRITS 4EVA LONG LIVE THE QUEEN ME DARLING!

  • @cybersjock Long live the queen? you know this is a punk song.

  • @salopvilla Well said!!

  • @salopvilla You have said it all in your statement ! THIS IS QUALITY AT ITS BEST !!!!!!!!

  • @salopvilla still a fuckin superb song,,,

  • everyone else at my age might be driving round with there drum and bass blaring not me i got the jam on full i play it loud and proud!! the jam will live on!!!

  • This is awesome! I still get the same feel I got the first time I heard it.

  • Best air guitar ever! But the song is awesome, even in album/sudio format

  • Brillant!!!! Nuff said

  • how old was weller in this vid. looks well young.

  • Love the harmonics through out the song...

  • gotta be my favourite jam song

  • i seen the jam in chicago in 82 best show i ever was at and i'm 48

  • fuck you tube....why you fuck around with the songs n comments you fucking gobshite cunts!!!!!!!!!

  • Why does this only have 80,000 views? When most pop shit has over 2,000,000 views, the youth of today are being brought up wrong.

  • @DanLeeClarke I agree and I am the youth of today ^^;.........I don't like the stuff thats out today besides Ian Brown and My chemical romance........get rid of X facter and any other music type show thing and slap bands like these on.......good oldies XD

  • @DanLeeClarke When you think about it, it's just as well since they don't really value their music. It's wallpaper to them. 80,000 people who care and understand > 2,000,000 people who would listen to a car backfiring if it was auto-tuned and looped. PS - I'm 26, there are some of us who took the time to find good stuff.
