Has any other band wrote a song about being the victim of a mugging? I know that plenty of thug hip-hop "artists" have written about doing the mugging...
@napalmsniffer you know it my friend !!! many a miss spent night waiting for a tube at midnight !! weller is a genius he totally portrays the times in his lyrics !! you just listen and it all floods back !! may he rock on forever !! thank god i was there in the day !! i pity the kids with the shit they gotta listen to !!
read the lyrics, its one of the most frightning personal songs ever, the last verse is so chilling. my friend's girlfriend got mugged in oct 11 and has to have surgery now, as they knocked her out, breaking her nose, all for the sake of (nothing as it turned out in her handbag) a pair of trainers I suppose they were after, having seen them looting in the summer . who would live in london nowadays?
@formulacountdown a.k.a.Mr1DanSmith I still see two lonely, over-weight, sweaty attention seekers. maybe you can date your alter ego. seems you two have much in common besides small minds and huge body odor..
@formulacountdown Paul Weller hated to mime, all the bands in those days had to mime as dictated by the BBC.
I watched Top Of The Pops when Paul Weller decided to protest, He stood there and didn't open his mouth while the song played as a protest against miming. He wanted to play live.
Only because of Weller bands were able to play live.
I always thought that Weller's dress sense was okay but overrated, in fact I thought he looked like Rodney Trotter when I was a kid, but he looks as sharp as f--k here.
1 of the coolest bands of that great period in British music..Untouchable was Paul Weller..He wrote some of the best songs ever back then but he's still penning classics..absolute LEGEND! Now I know that word gets used too much thesedays but he's earned the title of Rock'N'Roll LEGEND!!!
"Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero", "A Town Called Malice", "That's Entertainment", and "Smithers-Jones". No band ever came close to expressing the harsh realities of life and what it's like to constantly be on the losing end of things the way The Jam did. They did not get enough recognition.
foxton started it all for me 20 years later i still love doing it.,.never got the credit he should ,bass was almost the lead part and the driving force for all the jam songs...simple music no frills no tricks .one of the best bands ever from the uk..
i love to see the younger generation listening to the jam, great music will always be listened to..
After 3 ppl got shot & killed in the subway of Santiago, Chile (being the first 3 murdered people in the history of that subway), the first thing that it came to my mind was this song in particular.
While feeling aroun in one of my pockets for stuff i felt my keys along with some loose change.
This song came into my head.
"They took the keys, she'll think its me"
Me keys had my parents phone numbers on and through that they could have found my home adress. I took time to work around the keys and got headbutted for taking too long.
@Wilipeidia Bit grim. Wee neds. Maybe you should erase your parents numbers from your keys though? Just a thought for your general security! Take care! :)
@DavyDmusic1 well some write great songs but not like this bands nearly nonstop selection of great tunes on a consistent level- weller was on fire from late 78 until the split- the jam were near perfect the only fault i could find was foxtons mullet!
This is is seriously the greatest song ever. I say that about every song that I love, but this, is truly a unique piece of art, Weller's masterpiece and an incredible closing track for the most underappreciated contemporary album of all-time.
Problem is even at 50 years old I still get angry when he says about his wife setting the cutlery, polishing glassing and pulling out the cork - some of us didn't even know what a bottle of wine with a cork was in those days, was for the bourgeousie.
Go for it brown leather, is all I feel at a moment like this.
i thought it was pulling out the pork for three years. i mean who eats pork at midnight? and when them lads smell of too many right wing meetings. just how many right wing meetings is acceptable?
@youngie123 Lol you - lots of people eat pork at midnight, especially the sweet and sour type from the takeaway still open while they stumble home but, whatever and tbh I sense you care about as much as I do :) As for how many right wing meetings? Who knows but perhaps it's as many as get you noticed so the newer generation who have their own beasts to fight stick a label on you?
weller looks so tall but is only about 6 foot i ve stood next to him before - but hes rail thin and that suit has a killer skinny cut- ace tune ace band and weller never looked as razor sharp as this

@AlexTheHat Awesome bassist! However, If you wanna know the true meaning of pain then listen to his solo album after they went their separate ways. Truly awful... Went AWOL to see them play last gig Brighton '82. Well worth polishing dustbins for a week! Special times.
But the song is about being attacked, beaten and left for dead in the tube station while the assailants have taken his house keys and may go next to attack his wife at home. Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight.
feckin genius personified , the Weller Feller must have walked this Earth before . He was world weary in his early twenties ! ......... jeez he was too young to be so cynical ! ... I think he tried to be happy during the Style Council years ... but his racing bike ran off the road .
@madasahammer1 Just a note on rascism, it exists because of mindset that is trained to associate with the obvious and to do so negatively . Being any particular race is no qualification in life.
@madasahammer1 Yes this would be in keeping with the "Rock Against Racism" that was a featire of the Jam's political stance and the UK University wide program in 78/79/80 that began the fight to free Nelson Mandela.
What a fantastic tune , one of my favourites by the mighty JAM !!!! and the words so true of the society of today , let alone when the song was made .
"The glazed dirty steps, repeat my own and reflect my thoughts" Weller has a real way with words. He sort of paints a picture when describing his British youth days in a very visual way.
everyone else at my age might be driving round with there drum and bass blaring not me i got the jam on full i play it loud and proud!! the jam will live on!!!
@DanLeeClarke I agree and I am the youth of today ^^;.........I don't like the stuff thats out today besides Ian Brown and My chemical romance........get rid of X facter and any other music type show thing and slap bands like these on.......good oldies XD
@DanLeeClarke When you think about it, it's just as well since they don't really value their music. It's wallpaper to them. 80,000 people who care and understand > 2,000,000 people who would listen to a car backfiring if it was auto-tuned and looped. PS - I'm 26, there are some of us who took the time to find good stuff.

Why does this only have 80,000 views? When most pop shit has over 2,000,000 views, the youth of today are being brought up wrong.
