Vickers Vimy near miss at Farnborourgh 19-07-2008

The Vimy is a big kite of a plane: a lot of wing area, a small rudder and low horsepower. Add some gusty winds and she might as well be on a string, because the wind's taking her where it wants. Nice plane, however!

Even with the strobing effect from the camera, you can see that the port engine isn't running at the same rpm as the starboard one... thus uneven power..

I was there - there was a very strong crosswind - probly touch and go whether a take off was attempted at all but they didn't want to let us all down. Thanksfully the palne and pilot survived without incident.

This is what usually happens when having any twin-engined flying thing with just one mill pushing. Anyway, hats off to that brave pilot!

This is really a grass field airplane. Modern tires and a tailwheel don't really adapt it to

runway operations.
