Even in simply hospitality the competition is ridiculous. Whoever thought some of us would be fighting tooth and nail for a full time waitressing gig. Many friends have honestly given up on Ontario and found work in other provinces.
Now, there's ups and downs to union jobs. I'm in the utility sector. You DO work quite a bit in the spring and summer, but its great. You're outside, and the guys are usually pretty good! If it rains, you stay home, & get paid for 3 hours. They pay benefits, and a pension. The Graphic Design jobs had none of that for me! Your're usually laid off from January to March, perfect for freelancing Graphic Design! But if you want to clear $1000-$1500 a week - join a union! Google "Local 183"
You have gone down the same road as me, my friend! I worked in the "Graphic Design industry"... and ended up in the same position.... unemployed. We live in a new revolution now... the I.T. revolution. Unlike the industrial revolution, the I.T. revolution has made everything "instant." There's no loyalty to employees anymore. Companies hire temps. Its an in and out system. I have turned to construction as a means of living. I joined a union, and to be honest... its the best thing I ever did!
Tell me about it , even in Quebec it's hard to find a job, I've been looking for months and only got a 6-month contract with a car glass repair company ... If they don't keep me as a permanent employee, I'll have to go through the hassle of looking for a job again and will most likely fail to find one on time ... life can be depressing sometimes! But hopefully , you will find ... try and get in touch with an employment agency, they might be able to get you something .
